The State didn't lie about it. Nurmi has changed the meaning of the existence of porn. Is it "porn on the computer" if it's a link in a referrer in a cookie? That's not exactly an aircraft carrier of Wonder Holes for the courtroom jumbotron. Even the MSM reports I've read tonight say that there were "pornographic images" on the computer, but the fact is that there weren't. There were URLs. That's it.

After watching the judge nodding her head to Nurmi, now I'm worried! I sure hope we get the whole thing soon!

I'm as big a cynic as anyone but this is much ado about nothing IMHO. I think as often as not nodding in situations like a judge would be in is like the nodding you'd see during a corporate meeting presentation - it's not so much "I agree with what you're saying" as it is "Okay I get what you're saying, so move along to the next point."

If the Death Penalty is taken away from this defendant, I'm done. We will seek higher ground somewhere, I guess. JMO My opinion and the dh's is she needs a death penalty charge to even focus on her deed. She hasn't reached that yet.

Wow. She really went down the rabbit hole with that one, IMO. Now Nurmi is taking advantage of this ruling by wanting everyone testify in secret.

Trying to catch up on today's shenanigans so I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered but isn't Nurmi effectively launching an actual appeal of the conviction by threatening to do this? Is there nothing in place to stop every defence attorney from appealing every ruling on every motion during the course of a trial because they don't get their way? And considering that Nurmi will likely not be JA's attorney for an actual appeal down the road, unless she's acquired enough money to pay his private practice fees and she doesn't use ineffective counsel as an appeal issue, is this just him trying to win something...anything...at this point? At all costs?

This is not about her rights. He has to know his arguments are ridiculous and her rights have not been violated in the least, in fact quite the opposite. It's like he's willing to go down in flames to make some kind of name for himself or something, even if it's a bad one. Works for Baez. I'm at a loss as to what else to believe at this point.

It seems like Defense Lawyering in Big Cases 101 involves the spaghetti principle: throw enough spaghetti (or some other word starting with "s") against the wall and some of it will stick. IOW bombard the jury with 8 million things and hope a couple of them resonate with one juror. That could work when it comes to making 100 ridiculous motions to the trial judge in the hope that a few slip through, but I suspect it can be counterproductive when it comes to appeals. If he keeps whining to the COA about ridiculous things, I would imagine that they would quickly tire of it and would be leery of anything he might say even before he says it. They shouldn't be that way because it's not fair in a sense, but they are human beings.

JSS created a monster when she let him off the hook from November to January before filing that latest stay request. So now KN is trying to bully her by saying, "I'm going to keep filing appeals and requests for stays, so in every case you have to shut down the trial like you did for those six weeks last year." But those smackdowns to KN on his appeals were also IMHO reminders to the judge that she needs to just run her case and let it end. I hope she takes the hint and realizes now that KN is doing nothing but stalling and puts an end to it. If KN refuses to even subpoena witnesses, that's not her problem. If JA refuses to testify, that's not her problem either, other than deciding what to do about her previous testimony. KN will stretch this out as long as she lets him, but surely she has to be tired of it at this point.

Looks like we've come to an impasse. Really, really curious on how JSS will rule and if Nurmi will take it a higher court.

BBM - I don't think that's the case at all. The context they were questioned under as I recall was whether pornographic images were found on Travis's computer and neither of them nor anyone since has said that there was even one found.

I agree with LinasK. The judge has to go through the motions of going through the motion (HA!) but there is no way she is going to take DP off the table.

Seriously, search engines today compared to 2007/2008 are superior in the sense that the algorithms are calibrated to return more appropriate results.

Several years' experience has made a huge difference in fine tuning what users are likely seeking when they enter a given search term.

Couple that with historical context and apply prioritized filters based on currency of search arguments entered, etc...

Search engines of that era were much more primitive and developers (and their employers, of course) used to load up their pages with trending keywords so as to 'game' the search engines.

I'll shut myself down on this topic.

Like you say, things have changed a lot since then. IE had around 70-75% share back then whereas it's about 25% now with Chrome leading the pack at 50%. In mid-2008 Google hadn't quite taken over the search engine world yet, though it was well on its way. And of course the search algorithms have changed completely since back then.

This article from mid 2009 shows how search engines had changed over the previous 10 years. Kind of funny to see from the perspective of a nerd like me. I might have still been using altavista in 2008 myself.

I have lost a little respect with JSS during this phase of the trial, think she has lost control of her courtroom, and her time management really stinks. However, there is NO way I will believe the reason she isn't allowing cameras is because of her own appearance. Nope. JMO
