I just don't understand how the defense thinks a combative "expert" helps their case. Not that I mind! Hooray for our side.

It is possible to help the defense in this way if the judge does not interject. Jurors are swayed by the judge not taking control and allowing combative behavior from a witness for either side--and they are not swayed in a good way, IMO. I think the DT knows their judge and knows their witnesses can get away with a whole pile of garbage behavior.
