Hmm. So there was some physical beating going on. I think it was more "common" to keep your children in hand this way than it is now. Is this abuse? I'm in doubt now.

I've never so much as spanked my son and don't believe in physical punishment at all. But really? Belt threats and spoons doesn't meet the threshold for child abuse as mitigator, IMO.
