This doesn't show him if the message is being received or sent.

She is trying to get at whether the time is referring to the time it was received or sent by this phone.

JW - let's assume this is a received text.

The date and time phone receives messages depends on the services - yes - rule of thumb 20 to 40 seconds, but there are other factors that could affect transmission and reception time.

Back in 2008 certain phones would only accept 128 characters SMS - so if one long message is sent it can be broken up and received in pieces. Dworkin also says they might have to do it manually, but here it appears to be a continuous conversation because of the breakup of the words.
