Ships with sensitive sonar equipment found four large sections of AirAsia Flight 8501, Indonesian officials said Saturday.

The objects were found close together at 30 meters in the Java Sea in the sixth day of the operation. Officials told reporters that sonar located the plane parts, which are about 7.2 x 0.5 meters and 9.4 x 4.8 x 0.4 meters long. Weather conditions have stalled an effort to recover the objects.

At least 30 bodies of victims have been recovered, authorities said earlier.

Five of the victims were found still strapped in their seats, Indonesian navy official Col. Yayan Sofiyan said.

Report: AirAsia did not have permission to fly doomed route

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/01/03/report-airasia-did-not-have-permission-to-fly-doomed-route/

AirAsia didn’t have permission to fly from Surabaya to Singapore on the Sunday morning that Flight 8501 crashed into the Java Sea, Indonesian officials said Saturday.

AirAsia used to have permission to fly the route daily, but the number of slots was cut for the period Oct. 26 to March 28 because the country was nearing its quota for flying people to Singapore, said Indonesia’s acting director general of aviation Djoko Murjatmodjo.

Here's an article about the pilots not checking the weather before departure. Translated.

Apparently, AirAsia Not Retrieve Data Weather Before Aircraft QZ8501 "Take Off"

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Transport (MoT) get quite astonishing new facts before QZ8501 AirAsia plane lost contact. Apparently, AirAsia does not take weather data from the Bureau of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) before the plane was flying.

"Based on the report to the Minister of Transport Head of BMKG (Ignatius Jonan) that does not take AirAsia weather data (from BMKG in Sidoarjo) before flying," said the Special Staff of the Minister of Transportation Hadi M Djuraid during a press conference in Jakarta, Friday (1/2/2014 ).

Furthermore, he explained, the new AirAsia taking weather data BMKG 07.00 after QZ8501 plane was officially declared missing at 7:55. The aircraft departed from Juanda Airport at 05:36. (Read: This chronology Aircraft Loss AirAsia QZ8501)

According to Hadi, no weather data taken before the aircraft by AirAsia will be investigated by the Ministry of Transportation policy.

So does that mean that AirAsia routinely does not check the weather before take off?
Or does that mean that this specific flight and very experienced pilot failed to do so this one time?
The translations doesn't quite make it clear.

  • #352
I find it hard to believe they didn't check the weather. jmo It might just mean they didn't check the weather with Indonisia's standard weather information source before flying and used another source?

Experts weigh in.

  • #353
I think this pilot knew too much to be that negligent. :twocents:
I could believe they got outdated weather and didn't realize it.

Still in recovery mode and the blame game has begun.

Well, that answers the autopsy questions ....

Mindful of the cultural and religious beliefs in Indonesia, investigators said they would do what they could to accommodate the wishes of the families.

Budiyono, Head of East Java Disaster Victim Identification, said: "For the purpose of the investigation, we agreed and it has been accepted by INTERPOL that local culture be accommodated. At the very least, the pilot, co-pilot and samples of the passengers will undergo autopsies."

Mrs Tan and many families in Surabaya said they would not approve autopsies of their loved ones .....

It was a sentiment shared by Annie, sister of Hendra Theodorus. "We won't agree to an autopsy," she said. "We want to receive the body as it is."

I am not okay with this.
There are a dozen reasons why autopsies on every passenger is crucial.
We will never have complete answers in this case because they are not doing them. :twocents:
