here's the crux of the issue:

all assistance is dependent upon ''request'' from Indonesian authorities - they are calling the shots so to speak on recovery methods

''Foley also emphasized that this is an Indonesian-run operation, but the U.S. will do whatever Indonesian authorities ask for.

"The U.S. government is providing as much help as the Indonesian authorities request, and that's really the bottom line on that subject," he said. "And if they request more, then the U.S. provides more."

One should never be too proud to ask for help from experienced people. We have been feeling the same frustration.

Indonesian authorities have advised the two Australian aircraft are no longer required, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) says.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501: Did pilots receive weather briefing?

Questions raised over whether airline collected forecast in time

snipped

This is standard operating procedure, other pilots said.

In a report to Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan - which was leaked to local media - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the airline collected the weather report at 7am.

This was about 11/2 hours after the plane left Surabaya's Juanda International Airport at 5.35am on Dec 28.

By then, the Airbus 320-200 bound for Singapore had crashed into the Java Sea, presumably killing all 162 people on board.

And doesn't this life jacket they found look inflated?

2.14PM: An adult life jacket and three personal items believed to be from the wreckage of AirAsia flight QZ8501 picked up by the crew of the RSS Valour, was brought on board the MV Swift Rescue on Sunday at 1.15am.

QZ8501 recovery and investigation will affect Indonesia’s standing in the civil aviation world

January 5, 2015 by John Walton —

snipped

Unexplained significant changes to the operation’s Most Probable Area

Indonesia appears unprepared for routine seasonal weather SAR operations

Eight days on from the crash, writing that wind, rain and seas have once again hampered the search is becoming a cliché. A report from The Age’s Indonesia Correspondent Michael Bachelard (note: autoplay video) and this release from the Republic of Singapore Air Force give an idea of the conditions.

While the weather conditions are challenging, especially for towed-sonar and diving operations, they are by no means unusual for the time of year in the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

Questions need to be asked – perhaps under the auspices of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) – about whether Indonesian authorities have suitable SAR equipment to operate year-round in the extensive area for which Indonesia has SAR responsibility.

Swiss Air 111 crashed and shattered 8 km from Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada and the depth of the site was 180 feet. The black boxes were recovered by day 8. The Atlantic is less than friendly yet recovery results were excellent and sadly only one body was identifiable visually. It was a joint effort of both Canadian and US capabilities (coast guards, navy, CFB Gagetown and local commercial fishermen). The crash occurred around 10:30 pm.

from your link:

''Numerous international SAR and air accident investigation organisations have offered their assistance to BASARNAS, air accident investigator NTSC and other Indonesian bodies. Not accepting assistance in this field, while consistently making errors and conducting the investigation in a way that precludes international transparency, would seem at the very least deeply unwise for a government and aviation regulator with a poor reputation even before the crash of QZ8501. It seems there is a lot of off shore drilling in both Malaysia and Indonesia, so there is no shortage of vessels with cranes capable of doing ''some heavy lifting'' in terms of raising the airplane.

What bothered me was the wait until yesterday to pull out the ship that was highly equipped due to the name of it. jmo

Mostly anything I post that is a c&p is not always my opinion but for discussion.

The world is shrinking and I truly believe from what I have read there was an amazing response, South Korea, Singapore navy, China even Russia aside from Australia and US Navy. With all of that expertise, I am dumbfounded that there seemed to be a reluctance to deploy the heavy ships from the beginning i.e. ones that could remain there overnight. The original SAR vessel wasted a lot of time based on the original reports MOO.

12.07PM: Two more bodies have been found and Malaysian ship KD Kasturi is in the process of recovering them, says Chief of Navy Abdul Aziz Jaafar.

11.55AM: Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry has imposed mandatory briefings for pilots prior to departures, the Jakarta Post reports. The briefings would keep pilots informed of possible emergency decisions that they might have to make while flying, the ministry’s Acting Director-General for Air Transportation Djoko Murjatmodjo said.

10.56AM: Indonesian navy divers have resumed efforts to identify suspected wreckage in calmer waters. No signal has been detected yet from the plane's black boxes, reports Reuters.

9.06AM: More than 30 students in Pangkalan Bun have volunteered their time during their school holidays to help out with the search operations.

Anxious to know if the bodies found are from the wreckage or from the sea. Tomorrow maybe...

Oh
Since we have a lull and I did ask the question (worst flight) I guess it's my turn. One was when we hit the wind sheer (if that's what it is called when the plane drops) Our youngest hollered out "cool" Everyone else seemed to freeze. My Husband grabbed my hand with a death grip and looked at me like pleading for an answer. I was calm. I did reply "I got nothing" Luckily we were close to our destination and carts were secure and everyone was in their seats. One of the Stewards did get hurt but nothing fatal. My ultimate worst was flying many, many years ago with 2 other Gal Pals. Long before I was married. There were 3 guys behind us around the same age who took advantage of the booze cart Mach 90. They were trashed 2 hours into the flight. Kept trying to engage convo and none of us were interested. One of them stood up hung over our seats and began singing "your so beautiful" and proceeded to puke all over me. Ya just happened he had the middle seat and so did I. My head, my clothes and we still had 7 hours of flight time ahead. Flight attendants helped me clean up as best they could. Good times. Good times! LOL

Oh dear….I guess you can laugh about it now. These are sort of pax that are frequently flexi cuffed and handed over the police on arrival.

sorry to hear this...........stay safe

Oh SA the makes my heart ache. We as humans can generally evacuate in time……but our animals ….I do hope your daughters friends horse is okay.

Just confirming this life jacket has not been inflated.

What about the life raft? What does it being inflated mean?
Does that mean a human being inflated it?
Or did just happen on impact?

  • #539
The slide had to be manually deployed and cannot be activated on impact. It will be interesting to see what the autopsies reveal as to whether anybody was still alive once the A/C hit the water. When I arrived at work this morning one of our senior Pilot's believed the engine had a de-icing situation not wing but engine. Had to go into a training course so I couldn't quiz him further.

Eeewwww .... you poor thing Bravo! Bet you didn't feel so beautiful after that.

O/T Our fires are really bad, houses gone but the people are okay so far, but the animals .... my daughter's friend was told to write her phone number on her horse's hooves and let him run, a pic of a singed koala in a person's arms sipping water from a bowl ... other stuff too sad to mention ....

Oh no...:tears: I'm crying with you. That breaks my heart...I can't even watch a movie in which something bad happens to an animal. Please be okay, fella. If you can please update me on what happens to her horse, now I won't stop thinking about it...

Please stay safe SA, it sounds like a living nightmare over there.
