AirAsia QZ8501: large chunk of wreckage found

Recovery crews believe they have found part of the wreckage of the downed AirAsia jet in 29 metres of water.

The news is a major breakthrough and came late on Friday night (Saturday NZT), just as authorities were beginning to worry that the wreck would break up in strong undersea currents.

The commander of the Indonesian navy ship Banda Aceh confirmed the find, saying it had come both from sonar on board an Indonesian ship, the Bung Tomo, and the American USS Sampson. The two ships recorded similar but slightly different sites.

It's believed to be about 23 metres long, and crews "strongly suspect it's the tail part of the plane", according to a report in Tempo online.

AirAsia flight QZ8501 wreckage found

Date January 3, 2015 - 1:15PM

The commander of the Indonesian navy ship Banda Aceh confirmed the find, saying it had come both from sonar on board an Indonesian ship, the Bung Tomo, and the American USS Sampson. The two ships recorded similar but slightly different sites.

It's believed to be about 23 metres long, and crews "strongly suspect it's the tail part of the plane", according to a report in Tempo online.

The find means that, for the first time, a combined crew of 67 navy and search and rescue agency divers will be able to descend to begin organising a search — with some teams focusing on the "black box" flight recorder and others searching for victims.

"We have a problem communicating with the people on the ships," conceded Pangkalanbun naval commander Haris Bima.

Days after the command post was set up in an airforce base in Pangkalanbun, the nearest city to the search site, the navy and search and rescue agencies still have no ship-to-shore communications. They rely instead on satellite phones, and sending each other text messages using ordinary commercial mobiles, which do not work when the ship is more than an hour offshore.

"It's not the best or most ideal," Mr Haris said.

10.45AM: BREAKTHROUGH?
The main wreckage of QZ8501 has been found, says the chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency BASARNAS.

Speaking in Jakarta, he said two big parts have been found at the bottom of the sea near Pangkalan Bun.
The wreckage is lying at a depth of 30 metres. Oil spills have also been detected in the area.
Search teams are currently deploying remotely operated vehicles to take a closer look at the wreckage before sending divers.
High waves and strong current are still hampering search efforts.

Thanks for the link. When it was first discussed it does seem like a very plausible theory. IMO.
ETA-would this cause the steep climb tho? If that report was accurate
I'm on a new laptop and don't have translation added yet LOL

I kind of think if the climb data is accurate is was an updraft not anything crew did jmo! Had sole survivor on cnn on in background an hour of pretty much nothing survivors guilt exhists nothing profound there

Keep watching it's now getting into some of the forensic end of Investigations. Agree on the updraft I was asking if it could occur in combination with icing issue. Nothing the crew did. In fact I do wonder if this Pilot actually pulled off a soft landing and things went badly from there.

awesome, and at least its early in day , so hopefully we can at least confirimation and see if one of them is the tail area!

He said three vessels sent out to a sea area where the oil slick was spotted located the "two objects big enough in measurement that are close to each other," said Soelistyo.

from your quote:

"The larger of the objects was around 10 metres by five metres''

Let's hope this information is 'in addition' to the previous information about the 23 metre length object
