Agree. I have not read anything to date about hearing any pings. Now I either heard it or read it (not verbatim) something about so many vessels in the area may be hampering anyone hearing the pings. Something of that nature. Anyone?

Maybe they have abandoned even trying to listen for it now that they seem to have found some main wreckage pieces. If the divers get to go down and spot the tail section, its probably not even necessary to try to listen for it anymore.

That is what I was wondering as well. Makes sense.

Sounds like the divers are going in. :)

Strong currents and big waves that had prevented divers from entering waters eased on Sunday. About 90 divers from Indonesia and Russia were being deployed to recover more bodies that officials believe are still strapped in their seats, said National Search and Rescue deputy chief Tatang Zainudin.

"We hope lower waves will give us a better result today," Zainudin said. "We are racing with time and weather in running this mission."

Other suspected plane parts were seen scattered on beaches during an aerial survey.

Generally, aviation experts say the more passengers, luggage and parts of the aircraft that remain intact, the more likely the plane hit the water in one piece.

To help people understand and not worry about the searches being able to go back and find the exact spot where the Sonar found the large chunks, I can help explain how they mark the locations of the chunks when they spotted them with Sonar.

One thing I suspect the ship would immediately do upon spotting a large chunk on bottom with their Sonar (which can make a pretty nice digital image of the sea floor with modern sonar devices) is they would get the GPS satellite position. The GPS satellite position is the Longitude + Latitude as provided from a GPS device that they would also have on board. All modern ships have these.

Once they have the GPS position, they save that position in their GPS device and label it as for example "SPOT A". Then, on any other day after that, all they have to do is to turn on their GPS device and begin to navigate back to that same exact position.
They can even give the position over their radio to any other search vessel and those vessels can navigate to that spot.

They also are probably dropping physical marker bouyes as well which stay in the water and if they have a long enough chain/cabel with weight on end, they can keep the marker bouyey over the site.
Which would make it even easier to find spot.

I have a nice hand-held GPS device that I use to mark the location of my truck as I begin to head out into the woods whenever I am hiking or deer hunting. It is nothing short of amazing to use and I never go in the woods without it and spare batteries. I mark my truck with a label like "TRUCK", and the amazing thing is I then shut off my GPS. Then hours later when I want to leave, I turn it on, and use it to navigate to my truck. It shows me the direction (in 360 compass degrees), and also tells me how far in distance my truck is.

As I get closer to the truck, it is a nice feeling when my GPS shows the distance getting smaller and smaller because I then know I am heading correctly to my truck.
If anyone does any serious hiking or venturing anywhere where you could get lost, I highly recommend investing in a hand-held GPS. They are truly amazing and not that expensive. I paid 200$ for mine about 8 years ago.

Great info Hatfield. Thanks. The hand held GPS is the smart way to go. For those who value their life. Which should be everyone.

Thanks. The great thing about it too is it allows me to go hunting very deep in the woods without having to worry about getting lost. Its a nice feeling to be able to hike and hunt freely and very deep in unknown woods without always trying to make mental images of how to get back. I have gotten to where I depend on the unit to work for me. The only thing I worry about now is making sure I have extra batteries and that I dont drop and break it. LOL :)

ETA: I have found that by using a compass with my GPS I can more easily navigate back to my truck. Once I get the proper "heading" from my GPS, I then just whip out my compass and head to whatever degrees the GPS told me to.

I've always loved land navigation even before GPS by maps and compass but nothing beats GPS. Here's some bouy info from the java sea, hopefully taken close to the search area. You can get 2 days forecast but I've noticed it can change every 6 hours or so. Moving your mouse over the map gives you lat. and longitude. Something to play with.

9.45AM: According to Indonesian media Metro TV and Republika, Indonesia has deployed the controversial navy ship KRI Usman Harun to hunt for the missing AirAsia QZ8501 plane. Both media reported that the ship is equipped with advanced underwater sonar capabilities, which would aid in search efforts to find the main wreckage site.

Singapore had in February last year opposed the naming of the ship after the two MacDonald House bombers. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen also said then that the ship would not be allowed to call at the Republic's ports and naval bases.

That link is really neat. It is truly amazing the wealth of information we can get at our fingertips these days. Incredible.

I'm tempted to sign-up for the 7 day trial of premium but will be gone tomorrow. Monday morning looks like the best weather but it goes down hill quickly. Those forecast are color coded and start showing red or hazardous weather starting Tuesday in the blurred out part.

Metrotvnews.com, Central Kalimantan: A total of 17 Russian divers have plunged into the search locations in the Strait QZ8501 AirAsia plane Karimata, Central Kalimantan at 01.00 pm, Sunday (04/01/2015) morning. Their main focus is to find the black box that fateful flight.

The assistance of the Russian team arrived in the port of Kumai at 17:00 pm, Saturday (01/03/2014) yesterday. They ushered KR Andromeda and should immediately dive in search location.

However, they still have to wait for a modern tool that was sent and experienced logistics control. Alhasill, this team should stay with building a tent at the District Office Kumai.

In the search, the team will be assisted semi-robotic tool. This advanced technology is useful to look for the presence of the fuselage.

Meanwhile, the Russian team is rumored to have a powerful ability in the evacuation of various disasters. One of them, when they helped search Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft that crashed into Gunug Salak, West Java, in mid-2012 and then.

I don't think it's just family keeping quiet. It's awful quiet today in the news. Repeated links except for finding the black boxes. It appears finding bodies will be updated by morning?

11AM: Reporter Sumisha Naidu says AirAsia minders have stopped families from talking to media. These were families willingly talking to press, she added. She is not sure if this is part of protocol, or just some well-meaning staff being over-protective of the families.

10.50AM: Indonesia's meteorological agency said on Sunday that weather was the "triggering factor" behind AirAsia QZ8501's crash, after an initial report showed the plane could have flown into storm clouds.

"The most probable weather phenomenon was icing which can cause engine damage due to a cooling process. This is just one of the possibilities that occurred based on the analysis of existing meteorological data," it said.

Thanks so much. Awesome. With the ever changing weather reports and figuring out the time zones as to who gave the report it had me spinning. Such narrow windows. Had no idea in Monsoon Season how quickly weather changed. I guess I never had to really think about it. Til now.

RSBM: Our media is quiet on the incident as we are having raging, out of control bushfires in some areas right now, including just outside the city I live in, so we're a bit internally focused at the moment.

Seems that Channel News Asia is also reporting on our fires.

When I saw the Russian plane roll up behind a CNN reporter I got more than a chuckle. I thought the pilot was going to run over the correspondent to make sure they were in the shot. And revved the engines for a bit before turning them off. It reminded me of Putin riding a horse for the cameras with no shirt on. LOL

According to this map, it looks to me like the new search area will be close to where the smoke was spotted on Long Island out from Jepara. I guess I'm still hoping that some survivors made it to a shore on this island or somewhere nearby.

that would be most wonderful news......
