The escape slide is normally yellow ….the sides can be grey. The slide can then be detached and used as a raft. Maybe when the slide/raft had been folded it appeared darker in colour.

bringing up the current discussion

The slide wouldn't have "heaving line" and "sea anchor" printed on the side, imo. I vote for raft on that one.

Just to elaborate….all doors will have a slide which can be used as a raft. When you get on board an A/C the exit doors will have a big bulge on the lower part that is the slide when activated can be used as a raft. The overwing exits have a slide however on an A320 cannot be used as a raft. I think it has something to do with the flaps. Can double check tomorrow.

thank goodness Emirates is here to help us

Maybe not. I wish I could recall where I read about the way crashes into water remove the clothing, but it gave a decent explanation for how it happens. Women's clothing is easier to come off than men's because it often is more delicate and loosely fitted. Plus men wear shirts that are buttoned up or hard to get on/off over the head if you think about it.

Hmm this could prove my point if men's clothing is more difficult to come off. If he were wearing a button down shirt over an undershirt and a pair of button fly slacks, it would be more difficult to come off. It could make sense that he removed them, leaving on his skivvies and undershirt.

Maybe. Or...it took off his outer clothing and left his underwear because of the difficulty getting off the outer wear. But the woman's clothing was completely gone because a bra and panties are easier to come off.

It looks like a slide to me. And I believe emirates said that life rafts are a bright color, correct emirates?

someone had to deploy that -- it does not deploy on impact acc to Emirates -- that's the kicker

Sorry. The thing I read earlier about the clothing I meant. It explained why a woman would be disrobed by the crash and waves before a man would in same circumstances.

last bit on the retrieval efforts:

""Three ships have (recorded) the pings so we can confirm the coordinates of the location of the black box," Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee investigator Santoso Sayogo told Reuters.

If weather conditions are conducive, "hopefully they will recover the black box tomorrow morning," Santoso said. "The coordinates show the bottom of the sea (in that location) is sand so the divers should easily be able to see it."

If and when the recorders are found and taken to the capital, Jakarta, for analysis, it could take up to two weeks to download data, investigators said, although the information could be accessed in as little as two days if the devices are not badly damaged. ''

Was there also a woman found without clothing? I'm confused now lol. I thought it was just the one man found without clothes?

No. I was talking about the article I read. Sorry to confuse everyone.

I really don't want to think of them doing a safe landing and then to have no survivors. :( It just seems so cruel. I guess when they get the black boxes...they will know for certain.

This incident has really been an eye opener ..... no life rafts or life vests on many carriers now.

I do recall real life rafts with radio beacons in them. They used to be stored topside of the wings. No longer it seems - if you are lucky -- just the slide hybrid raft.:gaah:

to save weight - some carriers have done away with life vests and tell passengers to use the seat cushions

all in post 105 this thread -- eeek
