Retrieving wreckage from AirAsia Flight To Singapore- no survivors recovered #3

  • #341
It has been almost three weeks since AirAsia flight QZ8501 ended up in the Java Sea, and less than a third of the passengers have been found so far. One family who lost four relatives in the crash has turned to faith for strength, and has held weekly prayer sessions.

Sessions like this have been held every week at the home of Soemamik, one of the victims …. She is the mother of Djoko Suseno - a local teacher and entrepreneur - who was also on the AirAsia plane with his wife and daughter. But while her son and daughter-in-law have been recovered from the Java Sea, Ms Soemamik and her granddaughter remain missing.

Family members said the holiday was Mr Djoko's gift to his daughter for topping her class.

On hindsight, family members said Ms Soemamik might have had a premonition about the ill-fated flight. Sumartono, Soemamik's younger brother, said: "Before Sumami left, she visited my home and said her farewell. Oddly, she said she wouldn't be coming back. I wondered why she said that and a day later the accident occurred."

Mr Agung said he would use the insurance payment from AirAsia to fulfil his brother's dream- to buy the family a plot of land and build a mosque.

OT somewhat

Its hard to condemn other countries policies when my own country sometimes has bad policies too as no country is perfect. With that said, I just ran into this article and am appalled that Indonesia is going to use the firing squad to execute 5 people of drug smuggling. I just find a death sentence way too harsh and especially by the cruel method of firing squad. My goodness. Its no wonder that part of the world may not have the best search and rescue policies.

"Five foreigners and an Indonesian woman sentenced to death on drug charges will be executed by firing squad despite international pleas, Indonesian officials said Saturday"

""What we do is merely aimed at protecting our nation from the danger of drugs," Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo told reporters Thursday. "There is no excuse for drug dealers, and hopefully this will have a deterrent effect.""

"Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws and often executes smugglers. More than 138 people are on death row, mostly for drug crimes. About a third of them are foreigners."

There's not really a good way to die in a country that has the death penalty. Look at the recent botched fatal injections in the States.

Unlikely.

However if they lost both engines (a current theory) they may have lost communication too.
I am hoping our airbus engineers will give us a definite answer on that. :seeya:

I agree as well, lightening would not take out communication. AC receive lightening strikes daily. Normally there is an entry point and exit point. AC are designed to withstand strikes. However will check with my trusty boys tomorrow. Will get back to you.

If you have a chance read 'MY STORY' by Schapelle Corby. She made mention about the availability/usage of hard drugs within Kerobokan gaol. The book also refers to one of the Bali 9 wanting to change prisons so he could get off ice. Just my opinion only I don't think the sentence fits the crime regarding death by firing squad.

Oh, but I did read another tweeter (Twitterer?) post that an official said there was more than just weather to the cause of the crash. I will try to find where I saw it. It was vague and not at all specific about what that meant.

Air Asia Update:

The recovery mission of QZ 8501 aircraft main fuselage continued to be hampered (yesterday - Saturday) by a thunderstorm that surrounded the primary search area with sea waves reported around 3 – 5 meters high.

In addition, the three passengers which were located in the sea near Sembilan Island, South Boreno –approximately 650 kms from the point in which the aircraft lost contact – have arrived at Bhayangkara Hospital ....

... five passengers have been identified as: Yenni Soewono (female), Kho Kusuma Chandra (male), Sesha Aldi Krisputra (male), Bob Hartanto Wijaya (male), Albertus Eka Surya Yulianto (male).

BASARNAS has confirmed to have recovered a total of 51 remains of which 45 have been identified by DVI POLRI and 6 are still being identified.

Sadly for us, Jackson Board posted that he's moving on to another assignment and his QZ8501 coverage is over. :(

Did anything productive happen last night? I guess the main media is off for the weekend...

That is too bad. His tweets and links were really good.

This is a rough part of the recovery as things are taking a long time now. That weather there sure has not helped. Almost every picture I see has a cloudy overcast sky. It must be like Portland Oregon where it rains a lot.

Here's the source, Jeff Wise, who refers to statement made in Indonesian (or some non-English) language. You Tube video linked:

Thank you so much for this. This is very helpful and I have been waiting to see something like this.

JMO
This is just a theory. I believe this provides a hint that some of the people may have survived the initial impact and unfastened their seat belts. Because notice how the identified and recovered people are from all different areas of the plane. The main fuselage section that is still on the bottom appears to show some of the people have been recovered from that section. Which kind of tells me they must have unfastened their seat belts after impact.

Unless the impact ripped people from their seats which is also possible I suppose. I am sure the forces were tremendous and some people may not have tighted their belts enough so maybe it doesnt mean that at all. Im not sure.

This is very interesting to me though and I think it opens up a lot of new questions now to me.

Before seeing this , I was guessing most of the people found already would have all been near that tail section and yet that is not what we see.

Could it just be that the recovered passengers did not have their seatbelts on?

Anythings possible although with the rough weather I would have thought the captain would have probably put the "fasten seat belts" sign on and maybe even made an announcement to the passengers about the seat belts like they usually do when they turn on the seat belt sign.

Some people probably inevitably disobey of course so anything is possible.

So far, the only rows (where people were seated) where nobody has been recovered from yet are these rows below. Putting a space where rows are not right together consecutively:

New statement from AirAsia

"SURABAYA: AirAsia Indonesia wishes to update on the latest developments on the search and rescue (SAR) operations led by the National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) Republic of Indonesia.

The recovery mission of QZ 8501 aircraft main fuselage continued to be hampered by a thunderstorm that surrounded the primary search area with sea waves reported around 3 – 5 meters high. However, SAR divers and vessels were on standby in the area to continue the seafloor observation whenever possible.

In addition, the three passengers which were located in the sea near Sembilan Island, South Boreno –approximately 650 kms from the point in which the aircraft lost contact – have arrived at Bhayangkara Hospital, Surabaya this morning for identification purposes.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Victim Identification Police Department Republic of Indonesia (DVI POLRI) announced that five passengers have been identified as: Yenni Soewono (female), Kho Kusuma Chandra (male), Sesha Aldi Krisputra (male), Bob Hartanto Wijaya (male), Albertus Eka Surya Yulianto (male). AirAsia Indonesia officially handed over the passengers to their respective families this afternoon.

To date, BASARNAS has confirmed to have recovered a total of 51 remains of which 45 have been identified by DVI POLRI and 6 are still being identified.

AirAsia Indonesia would like to take this opportunity to urge the public seeking progress on the search and evacuation and identification process of QZ 8501 passengers to refer solely to official information from BASARNAS and DVI POLRI.

You may also obtain substantiated information only from authorised AirAsia social media accounts: Facebook (www.facebook.com/AirAsia ) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/AirAsia )

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and friends of our passengers and colleagues on board QZ 8501."

Very interesting! (I hope the chart loads too.)
14, 15, and 16 were mostly empty seats, but 28 & 29 were occupied.
Where about did the nose and tail break off?
What about the missing wing? Did it just break in two or did it tear a hole in the side of the fuselage as it separated from the plane?
So many questions could be answered if they are able to lift the fuselage up in one piece.

That's odd an A320 only have a Capt and F/O - so I wonder why there was an Engineer. There are some AC which will have a CAPT/FO/FE…FE being Flight Engineer. I wonder if that had a dead heading Engineer in the FD. I'll also confirm this tomorrow.
