Retrieving wreckage from AirAsia Flight To Singapore- no survivors recovered #3

I noticed just like in some tall buildings with elevators that have no Floor #13, that there is no row #13 on this plane. Wonder if all planes don't have a row 13.

I think your right this website shows the seating plan for an Airbus A320 and there are no seats in row 13 the space is for emergency exits. The photograph on the site is quite useful.

http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Air_Asia/Air_Asia_Airbus_320.php

When booking flights and selecting seats, it is always a good idea to try to find one of these type of seating maps. Notice when you put cursor on any seat in Row 11. It says the seat does not recline. There are other seats that provide more legroom in front as compared to other seats.

Some very helpful information to know when traveling and having to sit for hours.

I always like a Window seat so that I know I wont have someone on at least one side of me. These type of seating maps are very helpful. Airlines are starting to charge when you want to change a seat. I was charged I think 35$ to change my seat at the airport before boarding because I noticed I had a lousy seat. :)

Great observation, Hatfield! That piqued my curiosity, so I had to look it up. I found this interesting article about 13th rows in airplanes:

Have you ever noticed while flying that some airlines have a 13th row and others don't? Some of the reasons why might surprise you.

Airlines around the globe that do not offer a 13th row actually make up a short list that includes: Air France, Iberia, Ryanair, AirTran, Continental Airlines, and Lufthansa. Some aren't even sure when and how the policy came about and others have a very interesting explanation.

[...]

The number 13 is not the only unlucky number for some cultures, and airlines have responded to that too. Lufthansa, which is based in Germany, does not have a 13th or 17th row. "The reason is that in Italy and Brazil, 17 is regarded as unlucky," Lufthansa spokeswoman Jennifer Janzen explained.

[...]

Currently Continental Airlines does not have a 13th row. "Many years ago, apparently, someone decided we wouldn't have a row 13 in our fleet," spokesman Andrew Ferraro told AOL Travel News. "We maintained the row numbering system for consistency as we brought new airplane types into the fleet."

oh my--harsh words about air safety in Indonesia -- by Malaysia:shame:

"While observers believe most airlines have made progress in safety, they say the lack of well-trained personnel and decent infrastructure to cope with the increasing number of jets is a concern.

Shukor Yusof, founder of Malaysia-based aviation research firm Endau Analytics, said that Malaysia and Singapore had kept up but others — in particular Indonesia — had not.

“They (Indonesia) really must spend more time and effort to develop capacities to handle this,” he said, adding that areas including training, infrastructure and safety all needed attention."

Dear Malaysia:

At least Indonesia found their plane and they were sure when it was last spotted on radar.

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia (AP) — Unfavorable conditions in the Java Sea have again prevented Indonesian navy divers from accessing the crashed AirAsia jet’s fuselage.

The National Search and Rescue Agency says divers tried to examine the wreckage Saturday but failed to reach it due to strong currents.

Indonesian survey ships have located at least nine big objects, including the jet’s fuselage, what is believed to be the cockpit and the engine. The fuselage is sitting on the seabed at a depth of 28 meters (92 feet)."

I hope they catch a break in the weather ASAP.

SINGAPORE 18 DEC 2015 - AFTER 20 days at sea, the ship that found the fuselage of the downed AirAsia plane is back in Singapore, concluding the Republic's efforts at helping Indonesia search for the remains of the plane.

MV Swift Rescue, which discovered the main wreckage of the AirAsia plane last Wednesday, left the debris field off Kalimantan two days later, after Indonesia said it would carry on the search for the rest of the plane on its own.

The arrival of MV Swift Rescue marks the official end of Singapore's efforts in the multi nation search operation.

Many of those who had contributed to the search were also present for MV Swift Rescue's homecoming. As a mark of respect, they observed a minute of silence for those who died in the flight.

The wreckage that appears to be the cockpit was located by sonar imagery about 500 metres (yards) from the fuselage and was partly embedded in the mud.

"What we have so far is only a silhouette of the wreckage," Supriyadi said. "We need to deploy our divers to identify whether it's the jet's cockpit or something else."

He also said the divers have been told to retrieve the bodies of the pilot and the co-pilot if they are able to find them in the cockpit.

Oh my God! Maybe they could put it in a compactor, those large objects are a pill to lug around.

Yes, no point in keeping it as intact as possible is there? Couldn't possibly be considered part of the investigation. :sigh:

I am in total awe that they are chopping up the airplane at this point. Where's Airbus team in all of this ?

With Swiss Air, they painstakingly catalogued all of the debris , etc.

 I am very impressed with Singapore's armed services, their dignity, and their respect.

That's odd an A320 only have a Capt and F/O - so I wonder why there was an Engineer. There are some AC which will have a CAPT/FO/FE…FE being Flight Engineer. I wonder if that had a dead heading Engineer in the FD. I'll also confirm this tomorrow.

Confirming there should not be a FE Flight Engineer on board this equipment type.

Oh...ummmm...ahem..yes, of course, the investigation! We are using the utmost care to maintain the salvaged wreckage in the exact same condition as when it is brought to the surface! For the, you know, the investigation! Wink! ;)

Two more bodies recovered and bad weather still hampers recovery efforts.

High waves and strong currents continue to hamper recovery operations of the fuselage of AirAsia Flight 8501 in the Java Sea, officials said Monday. Indonesian Navy divers on Sunday were unable to access the main body, where most of the victims’ bodies are believed to be trapped.

Two more bodies were recovered Sunday from near the location of the fuselage bringing the total number of victims retrieved to 53, of which 45 have been identified so far.

The Disaster Victim Identification Police Department of Republic of Indonesia said that the team is collecting DNA samples to identify the six bodies that had been recovered earlier.

He said he couldn’t disclose precisely what the pilots said in the recording, but their comments indicated that “basically, they were flying the plane.”
“So far we’ve managed to transcribe only half of [the cockpit voice recorder] because there are so many noises,” he said. “We hope to complete it in a week.”
