Retrieving wreckage from AirAsia Flight To Singapore- no survivors recovered #3

Transport safety committee investigator Andreas Hananto told the BBC that there were also indications that the plane encountered bad weather.

Mr Hananto told BBC Indonesian that investigators had listened to the entire two-hour recording, and found that there was "no threatening voice on board."

The recording appeared to indicate that the pilot was too busy attempting to regain control of the aircraft to send a distress signal, he said.

Some of the parameters retrieved from the flight data recorder seemed to indicate that the plane had encountered bad weather.

More analysis was needed from the rest of the 1,200 parameters to determine the exact weather conditions and the impact the weather had on the plane's engines, Mr Hananto added.

Investigators have only transcribed half of the cockpit voice recording and that would require more analysis as well.

"In that critical situation, the recording indicates that the pilot was busy with the handling of the plane."

Investigators said they had listened to the whole of the recording but transcribed only about half.

"We didn't hear any voice of other persons other than the pilots," Nurcahyo Utomo, another investigator, said.

"We didn't hear any sounds of gunfire or explosions. For the time being, based on that, we can eliminate the possibility of terrorism."

Mr Utomo said investigators could hear "almost everything" on the recording contained in one of the flight's two black boxes.

The final minutes of the AirAsia flight were full of "sounds of machines and sounds of warnings" that must be filtered out to get a complete transcript of what was said in the cockpit, said Mr Hananto ....

The team, which is working with French, Singaporean and Chinese air safety investigators, hopes to finish transcribing the recording this week, Mr Hananto said.

He said he couldn’t disclose precisely what the pilots said in the recording, but their comments indicated that “basically, they were flying the plane.”
“So far we’ve managed to transcribe only half of [the cockpit voice recorder] because there are so many noises,” he said. “We hope to complete it in a week.”

Sounds as though there may be great difficulty lifting the fuselage .. after they can finally get down to it and estimate its weight.

"Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency said over the weekend that it is preparing lifting bags it will use to raise the wreckage, but experts have suggested weeks of silt accumulation will make the process difficult."

Me too, Boodles.

And I can only imagine the chills and angst the investigators are experiencing when they are listening to the horror of the last minutes.

Oh wow, that is very telling...sounds of warnings for minutes? Sorry to impose on you once again Emirates, what do your engineers say about this?

That makes a chill go up my spine...

It's interesting to see the formation of the wreckage so far.

That looks like a stock photo of TWA 800. Aircraft too big to be a A320. Also you can see the twin red stripes that were part of the TWA livery.

EDIT: Confirmed that is the TWA 800 reconstruction (photo RT.com)

The one time I didn't investigate a pic from twitter...I'll delete, sorry about that.

Heh. I thought it was too organized, I should have known.

Thanks for all your updates they are much appreciated. It is very sad starting to hear the contents of the black boxes. I'm sure we are all waiting patiently to hear if the pilot managed to ditch the plane or if it stalled. Hopefully the families of the victims and the public will find out how this happened. I am sure the flight crew desperately fought to save the plane and everyone on board. I'm pleased there has been no indication of terrorism or hijacking I didn't think that would be the case.

No need to apologise. I wish we were at that stage of having so much wreckage but it looks like we are in for quite a bit of a wait yet. Thanks for your updates.

The flight deck would have been lit up like a XMAS tree all for the wrong reasons. They would have master caution warnings for just about everything. This indeed would have been harrowing for the crew.

I suspect that the audio recording captured the stall warning chime that would have sounded from the time the aircraft stalled (somewhere above 46,000) until the aircraft hit the water. On the way down the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) would have sounded many loud warnings such as "sink rate ..sink rate" "terrain pull up.... terrain pull up" . From the wreckage it looks like the aircraft pancaked into the ocean after the pilots were unable to recover from the stall.

So it does seem to confirm that it did stall in mid-air, that's interesting, thank you Kevin.

Kevin with the information we have so far - do you think they could have recovered from the stall ? Agree with your findings.

Hananto also stressed that information showed the absence of an explosion before the plane crashed into the Java Sea waters, effectively disputing a theory implied by the National Search and Rescue Agency last week. "From the (flight data recordings) so far, it's unlikely there was an explosion," Hananto said. "If there was, we would definitely know because certain parameters would show it. There are something like 1,200 parameters."

With seven computers and various audio equipment, the small NTSC laboratory dedicated to the AirAsia investigation is split into two rooms; one for the cockpit voice recorder and the other for the flight data recorder.

Analysis of the flight data recorder would take longer, Hananto said, because investigators were examining all 72 previous flights flown by the aircraft.

Investigators hope to finish a preliminary report on the crash early next week. The full report could take up to a year, but will not include the entire cockpit voice transcript.

"In Indonesia it remains undisclosed," said Tatang Kurniadi, chief of the NTSC. "Just some important highlights will be included in the report."

Also .... "He declined to give details about what was said during the doomed flight's final moments, citing Indonesian law."

I was scratching my head there for a bit until I remembered the SAR head explaining his explosion theory of the plane 'booming' hitting the water LOL.....thanks.....glad that the IT guys were able to discredit the ''boom'' described by SAR -
