I'm watching CNN and they're not reporting about any found wreckage. They've suspended searching for the night and will resume in the morning.

Hopefully not mangosteens.
I can't believe this is happening again :(

I was JUST going to mention something about mangosteens!
If there were mangosteens on this flight too, my hinky meter will be off the charts!

23 out of 177 sounds like a lot of no shows, I wonder what a typical rate is.

Several families have had a lucky escape this time. Rows 1 and 2 practically empty - just 2 passengers who booked on boxing day.

What is that about?

I noticed that too.
Maybe they never provided a last name, so the ticket was issued using their first name as both the first and last name.
I don't think there is anything suspect about it though. Just another example of how lax airport security is over in that region.

Its always so heartbreaking when an entire family gets wiped out in an instant. :(

My DH and I and our two daughters just spent two weeks in Europe and flew home yesterday. I have a terror of flying, though I don't allow it to keep me from doing it. I often have to force dark thoughts from my mind for weeks before I travel. But this time my morbid thoughts were even worse than usual. I kept worrying about a crash or, God forbid, and incident like the plane which was shot out of the air over Ukraine, etc. Our oldest is in grad school in a different state, so she flew on her own to meet us and the rest of us flew together. I kept thinking how horrible it would be for our oldest daughter to arrive in Europe or back home and find out that the rest of her entire nuclear family had perished, leaving her all alone. Also, though we have a will, DH and I had decided to make some major changes to it, but weren't able to get it on paper before we left. That concerned me.

My thoughts kept going to this scenario the entire trip (not enough to spoil the trip, just in quiet moments as I was trying to drift off to sleep at night). I kept thinking that this kind of thing often seems to happen at holidays, and how horrible it would be to be on a plane in distress, feeling the terror of realizing you are going to crash, especially if you are traveling with your children, knowing that you put them in that situation. I had a strong feeling that there was going to be some kind of airline incident that day, if not involving us, then to someone else. My DH told me I was being absurd (he never worries about anything). Yesterday oldest daughter got off early on her flight but we were delayed as a snow storm came in (which I now know has resulted in major power outages and travel snafus in that part of Europe). We kept having to have the wings de-iced, and this just increased my anxiety. A little over 11 hours after takeoff, we landed without incident, and I was so relieved. Our oldest daughter had already texted me that she had landed safely, so I got it as soon as I turned on my phone. I read the news before I went to bed last night and was relieved also to see my fears of a plane going down anywhere else had also been just a figment of my fearful, overactive imagination.

I woke up in the middle of the night to read about this horrible incident and it really shook me. Entire families have perished, or perhaps there is a young lady like my eldest daughter who has had to find out that she is all alone. It's heartbreaking and I feel sick for all involved.

What is that about?

Sounds to me like they don't require a lot of ID or verification to get on a plane over there.

AirAsia flight QZ8501: Unread e-mail sees family of 10 miss flight

JAKARTA (Jakarta Post/Asia News Network) - Surabaya resident Ari Putro Cahyono has mixed feelings over the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501, as he and his nine family members would have boarded the Singapore-bound flight on Sunday had it not been an unread e-mail.

I totally forgot about icing.

Has Mary Schiavo been on CNN yet?

Yes, and last night she pointed out the Airbus A320 is the same model Captain Sullenberger piloted, and that this plane is the only one that can be sealed tight in event of a water landing. It's something the pilots can activate.

Same thing I have heard CNN reporting for the past two hours since I got up. Suspended until Monday morning, local time. Wouldn't that put it approximately 24 hours since the plane disappeared?

:(

IIRC, it depends on the situation.
I know in the Hudson River landing, the airtight seals couldn't be activated because the plane was falling at too fast of a speed for them to be activated in time.
I don't know the situation with this plane though. But if the reports of a storm are true and the plane fell from the sky due to it, I don't know of the airtight seals would have had time to be activated.
IMO.

This may be a silly or already answered question, but, pray tell, what is a mangosteen? Thanks in advance!

TY Skittles! I think I remembered they patented a floatable black box to.

BBM

I agree. My understanding is a very low angle of pitch is required for a successful ditch.

A mangosteen is a fruit.
I think it was stated that the other plane that went missing a while ago was carrying a shipment of these in the hold.

A tropical tree which grows fruit.

It's a type of fruit and there were tonnes of them on board MH370 when it went missing. We were convinced they'd be spotted floating on the surface - one fab websleuths member (EDIT - checked back and it was Alioop) went the extra mile and did an experiment at home to see how long they'd float for before sinking.
