It is distressing to see bodies on the news :(

While I may not share their beliefs, a lot of Indonesian people are very religious and IMO it is disrespectful to show them nearly naked. The women cover their bodies because they believe it is immodest to show their skin. Their last images should not be showing them in a state they would never allow in life.

:(

FlightRadar24 proved to be much more accurate than ATC Radar in this instance

It is now just after 7pm in that area. I am presuming that the boats will work through the night, as best they can.

Searchers combing the Java Sea to find and recover debris and bodies from the AirAsia jet that crashed there have the advantage of working in much shallower waters than those found in the open ocean, but also face challenges that include monsoons, murkiness and trash.

Mostly enclosed by islands from the Indonesia archipelago, the Java Sea has average depths of about 40 to 50 meters (131 to 164 feet). Van Sebille said it's shallow enough that if conditions were perfect, searchers could probably spot any large pieces of debris on the ocean floor using only their eyesight.

But because the monsoon season is underway, he said, there's likely to be lots of rain that will wash sediment into rivers that feed into the sea and make it murky.

"It's a pretty filthy ocean and there's a lot of garbage floating out there," he said. "Everything from small water bottles to big, abandoned fishing nets."

He said the currents in shallow seas don't typically have the same strength as those in the open ocean, meaning debris shouldn't move as much, although he said winds can quickly create choppy waves which can make the search more difficult.

Thank you!!

I was asking about such an app upthread and couldn't understand how there could be such a huge disconnect between online viewing and live tracking of aircraft! Wouldn't it be great if we could find same info on MH370 using this app?

Do you think that FlightRadar24 has archived data on MH370?

I think that the journalists should honour the deceased AND the distraught relatives. There is no need for every article that I open up to show the vivid pictures of anguished relatives in utter despair and grief.
The written descriptions are more than enough, thank you very much MSM. Give them some privacy and respect! :gaah:

Terrible :(

I'm glad they found the crash site, and with the sea being quite shallow they will be able to retrieve many.

My condolences to the poor families whose hearts are shattered today.

I've seen a couple of pixelated images of bodies in the water :(

The bodies seem to be in one piece, which could indicate a similiar situation to Air France flight 447 (plane impacted having flown v close to ocean). The bodies don't seem at this stage to be in their seats either, which gives me pause - and makes me sad.

The news today is terrible and tragic but not unexpected. I'm glad the plane was found hopefully they can recover all the remains and black boxes to find out what happened. At least the families know what happened unlike those whose loved ones are missing on MH370.

R.I.P to all the crew and passengers on board my thoughts and prayers are with their families. I hope the media try and give them privacy we do not need to see them in terrible distress.

Thank you for all your posts and updates I'm sorry we didn't get the outcome we hoped for.

The pilot was a hugely experienced pilot.

Iriyanto .... joined the air force for a 10-year service term, climbing the ranks to first lieutenant flying F-16 and F-5 fighters.

After ending his service in the air force, Iriyanto worked for PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines as an instructor for Fokker 27 aircraft. He joined AirAsia after his then-employer PT Adam Skyconnection Airlines ceased operations in March 2008.

A keen runner and motorcycle enthusiast with more than 20,000 flying hours under his belt in a career that spanned three airlines ... Of his flying hours, 6,053 were with AirAsia.

Iriyanto “is a good flier, procedural, and considered outstanding,” Hadi Tjahjanto, a spokesman for the Indonesian Air Force who trained with Iriyanto, said by phone from Jakarta before the news that debris had been found. “He was classified as a fighter pilot and acted as an interceptor should there be suspicious planes around. So speed in taking action is essential.”

I agree. It's sickening and the press should be ashamed. They love a grieving , wailing family member. Pray that is is never our face that makes the front page in such fashion.
Similar thing after the plane shot down in Ukraine. They showed graphic photos that are not NEWS.

ETA Note to Press: Bring back the old saying ' the pictures are too graphic to show you '. We understand what that means !

bbm: I hope we can hear more about those two signals

could those 2 emergency signals have come from boats or ships instead of aircraft?

Though it is EXTREMELY creepy that all 3 occurred in that area. :twocents:

They didn't. MH317 was shot down in Eastern Europe, nowhere near these two incidents. It just happened to be owned by the same airline as one of the other two.

Relieved but sad. Condolences to the loved ones and RIP to all those who lost their lives :rose:

And to those retrieving bodies, I don't know how they do it, such a painful task. MY gratitude goes out to all of them.

Looking at the images of the last known radar position of QZ8501 and where the debris has been located
Is there speculation that the plane had or was circling back?
OR
Did the flow of the sea push the debris south of the last known contact area?
