RI - Mass Shooting at Brown University - Providence 13 Dec 2025

In his 30ies? 🤔
So not a student (any more??) IMO.
It seems a targeted attack on a specific victim who was probably taking an exam.
Focused on exam, not paying attention to anything else.

(By the way,
those who study Engineering or Physics are usually very clever, intelligent people.
Very sensible.)

Some students in subjects like engineering/economics etc are in their 30's. Many go back to school in a major like that after working for a few years in the field.

I think so too. However the doors were unlocked and the classroom is on the first floor....could be opportunistic he chose that classroom.

I was wondering if this first-floor classroom was close to an exit. Was it at the end of a hallway?

Enquiring minds want to know!

One of victims is daughter of close family friend - ugh! Know whole family - sweetest people on the planet - all of them. There is so much hate in this world right now. Please pray for them.

Shall do.

If this guy parked his car somewhere, and returned to it, I'd hope that police would request footage from any streets in the neighborhood, to check whether a black clad person got into a car in the time frame. I know, time consuming and perhaps a long shot.
True, but the locals are saying the side streets are very dark. There might not be any footage that shows much if it is all in darkness?

He has kind of an unusual gait---it's like a quick jerky step?

He’s certainly striding confidently and calmly.
I’m unsure about the gait. I’m wondering if the heavy pronation may be caused by the sidewalk tilting or slanting. Hard to know.

I think one possible way of solving this is if this person goes on discord or somewhere and talks about it to his small group of 'believers.' I'm kind of leaning towards this being a 'statement' of some kind that he thinks he's making.

Interesting that they are not publicising what he shouted. Or are they and I missed it?

Yes, and no doubt he made sure to park on a dark street, If he indeed parked somewhere.

He looks to me like he's trying to walk as fast as he can without LOOKING like he's walking fast. The result is a bit awkward, along with the unusual gait.

I think the angle of the camera makes it look even more "off".

I'm not convinced of the usefulness of gait in identification. I'm struggling to think of a case where it actually helped.

I believe far more useful will be witness statements from the room he attacked, if this was indeed personally motivated, and the footage showing his movements before and after.

DECEMBER 13, 11:06PM:

BrownUAlert: Law enforcement agencies have established a perimeter around a portion of Brown’s campus, as depicted on a map published at Brown University (below). Individuals already in residential buildings within the perimeter should continue to shelter in place there. Police will enter all administrative (non-residential) buildings within the perimeter marked by the red boxes on the map to escort all individuals to safe locations outside of the perimeter. All individuals inside administrative buildings within the perimeter should continue to shelter in place until law enforcement officers arrive. For all locations (inside and outside the perimeter), the shelter in place remains ongoing — unless escorted by a law enforcement officer, this means ensuring no movement across or near campus.

I wonder how large the perimeter is? Is it possible they worry that he is still in the immediate area---hiding among the hidden students?

His black pants and outer shirt look like they might be too large for him and thrown on over his regular clothing?

I've wondered that myself. He could have discarded his outer clothing wherever, and was wearing a windbreaker, sweater and even jeans underneath. He did look heavily dressed in the video.

I disagree, I don't think they look too large for him at all. I think that's simply a result of the video quality.

The first i formation I read that it wasn't clear what he said. However, there may be those closer to him who hear it better but they might be injured or have not yet been interviewed by
LE.

I wonder how many people were at this review in the room.

I'd be surprised if there are not multiple students who were recording the session to review later in preparation for the final exam.

"Final exams scheduled for tomorrow have been canceled, Brown University Provost Frank Doyle said during a news conference tonight."

Uh, sir. I think you're going to need to cancel more than that. Beyond the immense emotional trauma, there are some practicalities--many students are separated from their study materials (either having to leave them behind in a building as they evacuated or because they were away from their dorm/apt when the lockdown started and can't get back to them). Believe it or not, students do actually study on Saturday late afternoons/evenings during finals as well as Sunday morning. And the lockdown is still on....so, the longer it goes on, the longer normal routines are impacted. Kids who were in the engineering building at the time likely won't be able to access their belongings for days if not a week or more.

And if this person isn't captured soon, do you think anyone is going to feel safe while taking a final this week on campus? You can post security at every door, but if you have no idea who this person is or why they did it, you're going to need to have metal detectors there too and hope nothing slips past you.

And how many parents are going to insist on having their kid come home ASAP?

There are direct victims and survivors of high school shootings there at Brown--talk about massive PTSD. And that's not even taking into account the faculty/staff's emotions and trauma.

This having been a Saturday exam, some graduate classes are also held on the weekends, to accommodate older, working students.

More detail on NYT from the TA who was leading the econ study session in the room where some of the shooting happened:

The session for the Principles of Economics class, scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in an engineering building on the Brown campus, was nearly over. “I was just teaching my review, like usual,” Mr. Oduro, a 21-year-old senior and teaching assistant, said in an interview.

A little after 4 p.m., he ended the session, which was to be his last time teaching that particular group of students, and said goodbye. “I was telling my students that I am so grateful for them,” he said.

As they stood to leave, he said, “all of a sudden, we heard gunshots and people screaming” in the hall outside.

About three seconds later, he said, a man with a face mask and a rifle entered the classroom and started shooting. The man screamed something that Mr. Oduro said was imperceptible. “That’s what the students and I — and the detectives — have been trying to piece together,” he said.

So, it sounds like the shooting began outside of that classroom if the TA's first alert was the sound of shots and screaming in the hall.

It was a large first floor lecture hall that can hold 186 people with rows of seats separated by aisles, similar to stadium seating.

The TA hid behind a desk with other students--one of them got shot in the leg.

The TA said many of the students taking the class are freshman.

He says a rifle? That is NOT a handgun.
