While the suspect in the Brown University mass shooting was found dead tonight, questions surrounding the incident and motive still remain.

The reason why Brown University in particular was targeted “is a mystery,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said at a news conference.

“I don’t think we have any idea why now or why? Why Brown? Why these students? Why this classroom? That is really unknown to us and it may become clear,” he said. “I hope that it does, but it hasn’t as of right now.”

December 13, 2025

• Around 1:45 to 2:00 PM, John encountered the suspect inside a ground-floor bathroom at the Barus and Holley Building.
  • John noticed CV due to odd behavior and appearance. Baggy layered clothing, flimsy jacket and gloves, large face mask, glasses, and winter-inappropriate attire.
  • They made direct eye contact at close range.
  • CV exited the building. John followed him outside.
• Between roughly 2:00 and 2:20 PM, John followed the suspect through Cooke, Manning, George, and Benevolent Streets.
  • CV repeatedly circled the same blocks.
  • Each time the CV noticed John, he changed direction or fled.
  • John described the movement as deliberate and evasive.
  • Near the Rhode Island Historical Society on Benevolent Street, CV approached a gray or silver Nissan sedan with Florida plates.
  • The vehicle appeared to unlock via key fob.
  • CV abruptly turned away and left the area.
  • John approached the car and observed two fanny-pack-style bags on the rear passenger-side floor.
• At about 2:16 PMon George Street, CV ran when he noticed John.
  • John caught up, slowed, and confronted him face-to-face from about two feet away.
  • John asked why CV was circling the block if his car was nearby.
  • CV responded, “I don’t know you from nobody,” and accused John of harassing him.
  • John noticed a Hispanic-sounding accent or cadence.
  • John saw CV approach the car one more time, and John continued onto Waterman Street without seeing him again

I don't believe so. Person #2, the one the police released the photos of, is named 'John' in the affidavit. John and the Redditor, who is specifically referred to as a Redditor, are mentioned separately.

Spoke too soon. It does appear John did make a post on reddit.

According to the affidavit, they are the same person.

This is surprising to me. I did not think they were the same person at all. Which throws my super suspicious looking person out the window. He was just suspicious to someone who had a great read and knew who belonged where at what time.

Guns to be examined for evidence even though officials “are 100% confident that this is our target"​

Guns found at the scene of the Brown University shooting suspect’s death will be tested for ballistic and DNA evidence even though officials are sure the search for a perpetrator is over, according to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

“We are 100% confident that this is our target and that this case is closed from a perspective of pursuing people involved,” Neronha said tonight at a news conference.

Going through all the surveillance photos in the affidavit... I always found it interesting that during the press conferences, officials repeatedly asked for surveillance footage, including any Tesla dashcam footage. I always thought it was interesting that they specifically mentioned Teslas.

Well, at 4:06PM the day of the shooting, it looks there was nearly an accident with CV and a dark colored Tesla that nearly hit him. Maybe the police were hoping that Tesla driver would come forward? Try and pull a license plate from the dashcam? Why not ask for that specifically, though?

Brown shooting suspect swapped license plates, making it harder to find him, attorney general says​

The suspect in the Brown University shooting changed the license plates on the rental car he was using, which made it more challenging for investigators to locate him, said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha.

“He knew what he was doing. He was changing plates. That’s why work of following and finding this car made it more difficult,” said Neronha at a news conference.
A witness had provided a license plate to authorities probing the Brown University shooting, who then investigated the car and its past drivers. This allowed them to identify the same vehicle of interest in the MIT professor killing.

Investigators then located the car in Salem, New Hampshire after a license plate reader flagged one of the plates that matched the car, two law enforcement officials told CNN.

Am I reading the affidavit wrong or is the witness they released the enhanced photo of (that people were saying was a woman in a hijab) that the perp ran from also the Redditor who wrote the comment about the car?

I think Teslas have cameras all around the vehicle, if I’m not mistaken. I think that is why they asked about Teslas early on.
