Person of interest in deadly Brown University shooting released

A person of interest detained after a Brown University shooting that killed two students and injured nine will be released after an investigation took law enforcement authorities in a “different direction,” officials said Sunday night.

Local news saying they have no photos of the shooter’s face, very few cameras around that building at Brown.
Nothing to release other than that one photo/video from behind.

They aren’t going to catch this perp unless they can trace DNA on the magazines they are said to have recovered from the scene

Also I remember reading the hotel arrest was due to a “tip” received.
Tipster obviously grasping at straws- bad tip!!
Majority of tips in all these cases aren’t valid/ end up as bad tips.

I’m still shocked about this one though.
Reminds me of Richard Jewell but thank goodness they noticed their mistake a lot quicker this time.
Hoping BE can recover from this devastating insult.
Poor Richard Jewell ate his feelings after false accusations and died from obesity/diabetes complications at only 44.

Personally I can take a gander at what was shouted during the Brown shooting.
I think the profile of the perp is very different from the clean cut gentleman BE whose life was just upended.

I'm really most surprised there is not more video of this person even if it's from a distance. I understand if he wasn't caught on camera inside the building, but we see what he was wearing outside as he was leaving. Did he just disappear into thin air? Do none of the businesses in the area have cameras? Do none of the houses have ring cameras or doorbell cameras? Were there no Tesla's or other cars with cameras at all on the streets parked or driving by? Where did he go after he was spotted on camera close to the school? Was his car right there so he hopped in a car so he wasn't seen walking after that? Did he pop into a building?

Leaning more and more to this being targeted and well planned out. The last POI just didn't make sense to me (not that any perp with any motive really ever "makes sense"). This school is so random, and the building and class seems so specific for this to be random. Shooting happens right as a study review for a final is ending. Really seems someone knew who would be there and when it would end or they just picked a random building at a time this study session was just happening to end? Maybe.

LE didn't deny or confirm that the person named by the media was the person they questioned. Either LE leaked it or maybe the person who submitted the tip or possibly a hotel worker or amateur sleuth who listens to scanners or follows LE around (i.e. "Nightcrawler").

Yes. If the mistakenly suspected BE was in fact in his hotel room throughout the afternoon of the rampage as he claimed, then there couldn't have been any cell tower data indicating he traveled to Brown and back. So, it seems LE confronted him based solely on a "tip". Still, that was enough to capture Mangione, so it is hard to criticize LE for looking hard at him. Unforgiveable that "MH" innuendos were publicized.

Is there any possibility that the person released is believed to be the shooter, but LE didn't have enough evidence to hold him, and they are keeping him under tight surveillance, expecting to get more evidence? I don't think he's the guy, but just looking for reasons that theory isn't possible.
I defer to more knowledgeable minds.

ETA: If they really thought he was the guy, I guess they would at least call him a "person of interest?"

Agree, even if there are lack of cameras on the university buildings (int and ext), what about security cameras on nearby homes/business/street light poles? In this day and age LE can usually collect and piece together the movements pretty well.

I hope they are looking at people who:

Have a grudge against the school.
Knew the victims or other people in that specific classroom.
Demonstrate a desire for infamy.
Have knowledge of surveillance enough to avoid capture of their image.

ETA: I think the shooter is hiding in plain sight. JMO

FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X on Sunday, touting the FBI's role in bringing in the person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry, Rhode Island by using geolocation capabilities. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez said in a press conference that the FBI had followed through on a tip to locate the person of interest.

So I guess we're back to analyzing the video.

The clothes look odd imo. Like they don't fit well. Might be just poor fashion choices, might be underlayers creating bulk. The pants pockets don't lie flat. The front opening bulges out, as if the pants are slightly too small through the hip. They also bunch up at the ankles and knees, as if slightly too long.

The top looks like the trunk is solidly filled out, but the arms are loose. Almost like there's a backpack or something under the outer layer. JMO.

I hope they are looking at people who:

I'm thinking someone who was struggling in the engineering department. Maybe a smart student, but someone recently disciplined or having personal troubles. Speculation.

The other idea is perhaps someone who is upset about "woke" universities. There has been plenty of dangerous things said about academic institutions and some people take the messaging as a call to action. Speculation, of course.

Or, pure hate crime against innocent college students. Or a targeted attack based on personal relationship.

We don't know enough to be able to pinpoint speculation, imo.

Nearby Thayer Street has a lot of businesses with lighting, and more than likely, security cameras. That's where well lit premises with a lot of activity might yield information. However, the area of Hope Street and Waterman Street and the other side streets near Barus and Holley have few businesses and relatively low levels of lighting. The campus area abuts and flows into residential areas, and it would be easy to park on a side street and avoid Thayer Street and its activity. IMO, the shooter had a vehicle, parked it on a quiet side street near the campus, and left the area after the attack.

IMO, the shooter is not a student, at least now, but familiarized himself with the campus by online research or by visiting the campus.

Motive and purpose unknown - political or religious ideology, mental illness, domestic violence, stalking, longstanding grudge - there's not much out there to tell us right now.

The shooter yelled out something, though. If there were words, beyond obscenities or just noise, those words would be a major clue. In their panic and shock, apparently some didn't understand the yells. It would be useful if a student was recording the session - some students do - and the recording was analyzed.

He walks like a heavy person, heavy on his feet. Often heavy people have ill-fitting clothes because it's hard to find ones that fit the waist and length, or loose clothes are worn out of self-consciousness as fitted clothes show off the extra pounds. JMO.

On Sunday, Brown University President Christina Paxson said that in addition to the two students who were killed in the shooting, seven students were in critical but stable condition, one student remained in critical condition, and said that one student was treated on Saturday and released.

“Our prayers continue to be with them and their families” Paxson said on Sunday. “We have reached out to the families of all the hospitalized shooting victims and are offering any support we can. I have spoken to some of the families and expect to speak to others soon. Our hearts go out to all of them, and we stand ready to give them anything they need.”

He walks like a heavy person, often heavy people have ill-fitting clothes because it's hard to find ones that fit the waist and length, or loose clothes are worn out of self-consciousness as fitted clothes show off the extra pounds. JMO.

I also see that heaviness, plus a determination. He looks sure of where is he heading, following a plan, being quick but not showing a panic or rush. Perhaps that shows some mental self-discipline?

So I went to google maps and decided to do a street view walk of the area outside the building from Hope Street to Waterman Street. Interesting to note that Waterman Street is a one-way street. The perp is seen walking on Hope Street and taking a right on Waterman. Waterman is a one-way with traffic going in the same direction the perp turned to walk. I also noticed after leaving Barus and Holley building walking on Hope Street there was a street before Waterman so for some reason the person didn't turn right on Manning Street, he kept walking and turned right on Waterman. I am curious if he had a car parked on Waterman. From the street view I can see that Waterman has street parking the entire way and it's one lane of traffic.

I agree, at this point this could be a domestic situation.

This really seems pretty targeted to me and to just casually walk away shows a level of familiarity or planning.

He (assuming it is a he) walked into a specific building and a specific room. If the intent was just to kill, there were likely many potential targets on the way to this room.

Yes, it is possible to park on Waterman Street. You can navigate through some streets to get on either Route 95 or 195. With GPS, relatively easy.

These statements do not engender trust in the authorities. The police did the same thing in Idaho after that heinous crime…long before they found BK. This infuriates me.
