Some things that stuck out to me in the affidavit:

• The shooter entered from the rear upper entrance and fired while walking down the auditorium toward the front.
• Investigators recovered forty-four spent 9mm shell casings, one unfired round, projectile fragments, and two large-capacity magazines holding about thirty rounds each.
• DNA profiles were developed from casings and magazines.
• No CODIS match was found, but the DNA profiles were suitable for later comparison.

Surveillance

• Shuttle bus footage captured the suspect walking away from the building immediately after gunfire.
• Victims showed strong physical and emotional reactions and confirmed the images showed the shooter. ( )
• A campus custodian reported seeing a suspicious individual matching the suspect’s clothing and gait inside the same building weeks earlier.

Redditor Tip

• A civilian witness later identified himself as the author of a Reddit post reported to police.
• He described a direct verbal confrontation with the suspect shortly before the shooting.
• His account matched surveillance footage and locations already documented by police.

The Vehicle

• Flock cameras captured a gray Nissan Sentra with Florida registration near the crime scene multiple times.
• The vehicle was traced to a rental from Alamo Rent A Car in Boston.
• Surveillance video from Alamo showed Valente wearing clothing matching the suspect’s outfit.

So this was an academic grudge/revenge situation? That was my second favorite theory.

so, probably a personal grievance against loureiro related to whatever happened in 2000.

and guessing his grievance against brown university is indirectly because he didn't do well there, generalized and not specific to any one person? i'm curious now whether he'd ever crossed paths with friedberg. but i don't think that's it. he could have found her if he wanted to. and this guy would have known TA's exist, etc., and that the prof probably wouldn't be there. and probably no one else connected to that class had even been born yet in 2001. seems like the kids in the study hall represented his old peers to him, to their misfortune.

Suspect was student of Brown in early 2000’s, university president says​

Suspect Claudio Valente was a former student who was enrolled at Brown University in the Master of Science PHD program studying physics, the university’s president Christina Hull Paxson said.

He was enrolled from September 2000 to April 2001, when he took a leave of absence before formally withdrawing in July 2003, she said.

Valente was only enrolled in physics classes during his time at the university, and the majority of those classes would’ve been held in the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building, where the shooting occurred, Paxson said.

He did not have an active affiliation with the university, she added.

Vehicle connected to shooting suspect was a rental, police say​

The vehicle connected to the suspect in the Brown University shooting that was found abandoned in Salem, New Hampshire was a rental, said Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr.

Authorities learned the vehicle was rented through verified financial records by the FBI, Perez said. The car was discovered near the storage facility where the suspect was found dead.

IIRC the Brown President stated he only took physics courses at Brown so highly unlikely he would have ever crossed paths with the economics professor.

Citizen witness encountered suspect earlier in day​

Colonel Perez explains that the citizen witness the police wanted to speak with had interacted with Neves in a bathroom earlier that day, followed him out, and asked why he was inside Brown.

Neves asked why he was harassing him, at which point the person walked away.

When the witness's picture was made public, he spoke to the police almost immediately.

Oh my goodness! I was at my boyfriend’s house watching a movie and we had the phones off. When I turned it back on I saw something saying they found the Brown killer and he killed himself inside a storage locker???? The news article online just said “the man,” no name.

I’m home now and will start catching up.

I don't believe so. Person #2, the one the police released the photos of, is named 'John' in the affidavit. John and the Redditor, who is specifically referred to as a Redditor, are mentioned separately.

Spoke too soon. It does appear John did make a post on reddit.
