"True to form, Donald Trump has again launched into victim-shaming Ukraine’s president and taking Vladimir Putin’s side after Volodymyr Zelensky repeated that Crimea can never be given to Russia.

Zelensky “will not legally recognise the [Russian] occupation of Crimea”, not because he’s intransigent, but because constitutionally he cannot do so.

But that nuance has escaped Trump .... "

How would trump feel if Russia wants Alaska back - he's going to give it to them? Or Mexico - occupies Southern California, parts of Arizona, New Mexico & Texas?? He's going to let them have it??

And you are right @Lilibet - no constitution can interfere what HE wants....

Volodmyr Zelenskyy will go down in history as a great statesmen. He was an actor and comedian before running for President and winning! It was actually a matter of life imitating art. The premise of the T.V. series he was in was that he was a high school teacher who was frustrated with the government corruption. One day, after school he went on a rant about it and it was secretly filmed by a student. Of course it went viral and he was nominated and won. The students crowdfunded for his campaign. The show is called Servant of the People. It’s on YouTube and you can get English subtitles. (Rough language)

In real life he ran as The Servant of the People party. The rest of the story…

I admire him tremendously for rising to the occasion of war and keeping up morale with his nightly broadcasts. It’s like he was born to do this.

From Ukraine with Love...

Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine, targeting civilians in Kyiv and other areas.

Yesterday’s Russian maximalist demands for Ukraine to withdraw from its regions, combined with these brutal strikes, show that Russia, not Ukraine, is the obstacle to peace. Moscow, not Kyiv, is where pressure should be applied.

Ukraine's capital experienced a particularly horrible and loud night. As of now, 9 civilian people have been reported killed in Kyiv and over 70 injured, including 6 children.

Other cities and communities across Ukraine were targeted with Russian missiles and drones in the middle of the night, killing and injuring civilians.

Putin demonstrates through his actions, not words, that he does not respect any peace efforts and only wants to continue the war. Weakness and concessions will not stop his terror and aggression. Only strength and pressure will.

Ukraine urges US to pressure Moscow, not Kyiv, after overnight Russian attack

Trump earlier said he believes he has a deal with Russia but not with "Zelenskyy."

Trump claims Moscow is ready for his ceasefire while Kyiv resists, as Russia targets Ukraine with missiles

The US President sympathized with Russian military losses, blaming Zelenskyy for refusing to accept his peace demands.

Currently, the general sentiment among the Ukrainian public toward Trump’s peace efforts is that Ukraine doesn’t need the US to capitulate, and it could have done so anytime over the past three years if it wanted to.

"Phones are heard ringing under the rubble": Two children missing after Russia attacks Kyiv, kills 10, injures dozens

Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital with explosive drones, ballistic and cruise missiles last night.

Ukraine's Interior Ministery has updated that eight deaths were confirmed in Kyiv. 77 people sought medical assistance, reported Kyiv Mayor Klitschko. Twelve buildings were damaged.

Russians target Ukraine with 70 missiles, 145 drones, killing 11, injuring 103 civilians

Ukraine's Air Force's data suggest that at least 22 Russian missiles and 13 drones may have reached their targets.https://euromaidanpress.com/2025/04/24/russians-target-ukraine-with-70-missiles-145-drones-killing-11-injuring-103-civilians/

Moments of the Russian deadly attack on Kyiv that killed eight people.

The nighttime assault on 24 April involved both missiles and drones targeting multiple districts, mainly residential areas.

The age range of injured civilians is from 1.5 to 80 years old.

It has been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a full ceasefire and a halt to strikes. This was a proposal from the United States. And it has been 44 days of Russia continuing to kill our people and evading tough pressure and accountability for its actions.

It is extremely important that everyone around the world sees and understands what is really happening. Nearly 70 missiles, including ballistic ones. And about 150 attack drones.

Unfortunately, there is significant destruction. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the rubble of residential buildings is being cleared. As of this moment, over 80 people have been injured across Ukraine. Everyone is receiving the necessary assistance. Regrettably, 9 people have been killed in Kyiv. My condolences go out to their families and loved ones.

There was a report from the military command. I instructed the Minister of Defense of Ukraine to immediately contact our partners regarding our requests to strengthen air defenses.

Today, I will brief President Ramaphosa of South Africa, who currently holds the G20 Presidency, on the situation and our need to intensify global diplomatic efforts. The strikes must be stopped immediately and unconditionally. We also count on support in humanitarian matters — in the return of our prisoners and Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. I am canceling part of the program for this visit and will return to Ukraine immediately after the meeting with the President of South Africa.

The Foreign Minister of Ukraine will hold all the necessary meetings in South Africa to fully inform the country’s political and civil society leaders about the situation.

I am grateful to everyone around the world who stands with Ukraine and supports our people.

It is an honor for me to be in the Republic of South Africa today on my first visit. This morning, our country endured another Russian attack — a massive one, with over 200 aerial threats: missiles, including ballistic ones, and attack drones. Unfortunately, there have been destructions and losses in our capital and other cities. Over 80 people have been wounded in these strikes. Tragically, there are fatalities. In Kyiv, among those killed were a brother and sister — the young man was 21, and the young woman was 19. My condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones. Rescue operations are still ongoing.

Because of this Russian attack, I have decided to shorten the program of my visit to South Africa; however, our Minister for Foreign Affairs remains here — as a sign of our respect and to carry out all the meetings that were scheduled. We are grateful for the respect shown to Ukraine, for the support, and for the shared sense — the sense that this war must be brought to an end as soon as possible.

Today, President @CyrilRamaphosa and I discussed the importance of uniting global efforts as fully as possible now to apply the necessary pressure on Russia — pressure for the sake of peace. We also spoke about the opportunities within the G20 framework — South Africa currently holds the G20 Presidency, and the role of the Group of Twenty can be significantly greater in defending human life.

"Russia sets conditions.

Moscow wants Ukrainian territory.

  • Dmitry Peskov in an interview with the French magazine 'Le Point' emphasized that the end of the war is possible only after the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas and Novorossiya.
  • Donbas and Novorossiya were recognized by Russia as its integral parts, which is enshrined in the Russian constitution.
  • Peskov argues that some of these areas are 'still occupied by Ukrainian forces', which is an obstacle to achieving peace.
The four regions mentioned by the Kremlin spokesman are:
Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.

Why are Donbas and Novorossiya crucial?

Peskov recalled
Donbas and Novorossiya were incorporated into Russia by referendum,
which is written into the constitution of the Russian Federation.

'From our perspective,
this is both a de jure and de facto situation',

the spokesman emphasized."

The plot thickens. A fearless investigative reporter from the U..S. who has been in Ukraine since the war began has just posted about Steve Witkoff (who meets with Putin and is part of the “peace” negotiations) having financial ties to Russia. Hmmmmm…conflict of interest much?…no wonder he parrots Putin.

After a meeting with Putin, he [Witkoff] told Trump that the fastest way to a ceasefire would be to give four Ukrainian territories to Russia – views that drew direct condemnation from Ukraine’s president this week.

"I think Mr. Witkoff has chosen to follow the strategy of the Russian side. I see this as extremely dangerous because he — whether consciously or unconsciously, I don’t know — is spreading Russian narratives. In any case, this does not help,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday.

But what has gone under the radar is that Witkoff has personal stakes at play, as he has business ties to Leonard (‘Len’) Blavatnik, an influential businessman with significant relationships in Kremlin circles – and who was sanctioned by Ukraine in 2023.

Blavatnik, who became a U.S. citizen in 1984 and later also held U.K. citizenship, built his fortune during Russia’s large-scale privatization period, shortly after the USSR collapsed.

Witkoff’s connections to Blavatnik raises an important question: can someone genuinely serve as a fair-minded peace negotiator when a business partner has ties to Russian oligarchs?

[Ya think?!!! Says Lilibet]
——————-
Here is an earlier article about Blavatnik…

“It is our considered view that Blavatnik uses his ‘philanthropy’—funds obtained by and with the consent of the Kremlin, at the expense of the state budget and the Russian people—at leading western academic and cultural institutions to advance his access to political circles,” 55 international relations scholars and Russia experts wrote in a September 18 letter to the organization’s board and CFR’s president, Richard Haass. “Such ‘philanthropic’ capital enables the infiltration of the US and UK political and economic establishments at the highest levels. It is also a means by which Blavatnik exports Russian kleptocratic practices to the West.”

"Putin is supposed to hear these demands.

Key points.

The US will demand that Vladimir Putin recognize Ukraine's right to have its own army and defense industry,
Bloomberg reports.

Donald Trump is also expected
to demand that Moscow returns the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant to Ukraine,
provides Ukraine with access to the Dnieper River
and returns territories occupied by Russia in the Kharkiv region.

Putin demanded demilitarization of Ukraine

Moscow's agreement to allow Ukraine to have an adequately equipped and numerically strong army —
something demanded by both Kiev and its European allies —
would mean that Putin would have to give up one of the main goals of this war,
which was the demilitarization of Ukraine.

The Trump administration is
also demanding that Moscow return to Ukraine the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,
which the Russians seized at the beginning of a full-scale invasion in 2022.

The facility would then be placed under U.S. control
and supply energy to both sides of the conflict,
the sources say.

They add that the details of these plans have not yet been finalized and are subject to change."

While the US administration is talking about lifting sanctions, recognizing Russia’s annexation of Ukraine and inviting Russia back to G7, Russia has escalated their attacks on the civilian population. In the recent days, Russia has committed terrible war crimes, slaughtering innocent people in Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, Dnipro. Yesterday, they killed at least 10 and injured over 60 people in Kyiv. Kherson and Kharkiv are being attacked daily.

By talking about rewarding Russia, the Trump administration has shown that Russia can keep killing with impunity. Instead of “ending the war in 24 hours”, Trump has poured more gasoline into the fire that destroys Ukrainian cities.

US President Donald Trump has said that the recent Russian missile strike on Kyiv was poorly timed and unnecessary. He also called on “Vladimir,” referring to the Russian leader, Putin, to stop and negotiate a peace agreement to end the war.

“Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Lets get the Peace Deal DONE!” he said in a social media post.

Victoria Roshchyna’s body has been returned to Ukraine six months after the 27-year-old Ukrainian journalist died while illegally held captive in Russia. Fears that Russia was avoiding handing the young woman’s body over because this would prove her ill-treatment have, unfortunately, proven well-founded. Ukraine’s Prosecutor General stated on 24 April that the cause of death had not been possible to ascertain but confirmed that she had been subjected to torture.

Here, after failing to make ground west of Orikhiv, Russian forces gambled on something bigger, a massive mechanized assault launched from the south and east. But what began as their boldest push in Zaporizhzhia in years ended in disaster, as nearly an entire battalion was shredded by Ukrainian artillery, drones, and anti-tank fire before reaching its objective.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia may have used a North Korean-made ballistic missile during its massive attack on Ukraine on 24 April, particularly on Kyiv.

Ukrainian special services are currently verifying all details of the incident, according to the president.

“If it is confirmed that this missile was manufactured in North Korea, it will be further evidence of the criminal alliance between Russia and Pyongyang,” Zelenskyy said.

Russia could play a key role in an agreement regarding Iran’s future nuclear program with the US, with Moscow being touted not only as a potential location for Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium but also as a potential arbiter in case of any violations, The Guardian reports.

The US President Donald Trump’s administration is pursuing a new nuclear deal with Iran on nuclear weapons. US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff visited Moscow on 11 April before his subsequent trip to Oman and met Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, Tehran’s long-term ally. During Russia’s war, Iran has sent thousands of Shahed drones to the Moscow troops, as well as drone specialists, who helped the Russians train in operating and producing the drones for killing Ukrainians and destroying its infrastructure.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov has passed sentences of 23 and 24 years against three Ukrainians, abducted in Donetsk oblast six years ago when Russia was still claiming that its aggression against Ukraine was a ‘Ukrainian civil war’ and Moscow a mere ‘observer’. The sentences are almost certainly based solely on ‘confessions’ extracted through torture from Andriy Harrius, Yuriy Ivanov and Stanislav Surovtsev.

"I understand that there was an agreement (with Russia and the U.S.) not to touch us during Easter. Well, why are you touching us now, after Easter?" she said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 24-hour Easter ceasefire that the Ukrainian government says was violated by Russian troops over 3,000 times.

"A father and a child are left alone, a mother has died. These negotiations, I don't know, there is no point in negotiating here. With whom?" Rumiantseva added. "(Putin) won’t leave us alone."

Johnson, once a vocal supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to end the war, criticized the reported terms of the plan as deeply flawed.

"(Russian President Vladimir) Putin indiscriminately butchers more Ukrainian civilians, killing and injuring 100 in Kyiv, including children. And what is his reward under the latest peace proposals?" Johnson wrote on X.

"As for Ukraine - what do they get after three years of heroic resistance against a brutal and unprovoked invasion?" Johnson said. "What is their reward for the appalling sacrifices they have made - for the sake, as they have endlessly been told, of freedom and democracy around the world?"

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is expected to use his visit to Washington on April 24 to urge the U.S. not to pressure Ukraine into accepting a peace agreement that favors Moscow, the Financial Times (FT) reported, citing three officials briefed on the trip.

According to the publication, Rutte is scheduled to meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Rutte will reportedly emphasize that any settlement imposed on Kyiv — especially one aligning with Kremlin demands — would only embolden Russian aggression and further destabilize the region, the sources said.

President Donald Trump on April 24 described Russia’s failure to seize all of Ukraine as a "pretty big concession," a comment that has sparked renewed criticism of his approach to the war.

During a meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that Moscow’s inability to fully occupy Ukraine reflects pressure he claims to be applying behind the scenes. "Stopping the war, stopping [from] taking the whole country," he said, framing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unfulfilled invasion goals as a meaningful compromise.

For nearly two years in Russian captivity, Leniye Umerova clung to a single hope: that one day, she would return home — to Crimea.

“I thought about Crimea all the time,” Umerova told the Kyiv Independent. “I dreamed of going there without the permission of the occupying forces, without going through filtration, without hiding, simply — going home.”

A Ukrainian of Crimean Tatar descent, Umerova, 26, was captured by Russian forces in 2022 while trying to reach occupied Crimea to visit her then-sick father, who had cancer.

The original plan, which included protecting Ukrainian cities, ports, and nuclear power plants, is being reconsidered in favor of a more limited and strategic presence. A source involved in the discussions told the Times, "The risks are too high and the forces inadequate for such a task. This was always the U.K.’s thought. It was France who wanted a more muscular approach."

On March 15, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer presented plans to send 10,000 peacekeeping troops to Ukraine at a high-level virtual summit in London. ...

Instead of placing troops near the front lines, the U.K. and France now aim to send military trainers to western Ukraine, fulfilling a commitment to deploy personnel without engaging in direct defense roles.

Trump, when asked what Russia would give up in exchange, responded: "Stopping the war, stopping [from] taking the whole country, pretty big concession."

The remark has unsettled many diplomats, with one Eastern European official warning that the framework threatens the integrity of international law: "This is very much about our own existence and the weakening of any safeguards that my or other countries have for our own independence."

"If one country in Europe is forced to give up parts of its legal territory... no country in Europe or elsewhere can feel safe, NATO or no NATO," the diplomat told CNN.

Von der Leyen emphasized that the roadmap, set to be announced in two weeks, will lay out concrete steps to eliminate the bloc’s reliance on energy supplies from Russia.

The strategy was originally planned for publication in March, but was postponed due to rising uncertainty over U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.

“For decades, I must say, we failed to recognize the costs that came with this dependence,” she said, referencing Europe's former overreliance on Russia, which once supplied 45% of the EU’s gas, half of its coal, and nearly a third of its oil.

Ukraine will have to make some compromises to reach a peace deal with Russia, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with Euronews on April 24.

“It has to be a compromise,” he said. “De facto this peace should come down to the fact that neither side will be able to say it won this war. Ukraine will also have to step down in some sense, because that’s what will probably happen.”

The Polish leader also said pressure on Russia is “the only thing” that could forge a lasting peace, though he warned it “will not be comfortable for either side.”

The Ukrainian delegation raised the issue with U.S. Treasury officials during negotiations on April 23, according to Reuters. Ukraine intends to continue lobbying for the initiative at an upcoming meeting with the International Monetary Fund, Pyshnyy said.

“Is there a mechanism to get access to these assets, to turn them into the source to cover the losses and damages of Ukraine and to fuel its resilience? The answer is very simple, yes,” Pyshnyy said at the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group.

The United States' frustration over stalled peace talks on the war in Ukraine should be aimed solely at Russian President Vladimir Putin, not Kyiv, French President Emmanuel Macron said on April 24, the French television network BFM TV reported.

Macron added that France continues to “welcome the efforts made by American diplomacy” but emphasized the need to “recall the facts.”

“The position of France is clear and will not change. We stand for sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law,” Macron said. “We will continue to defend the Ukrainian people’s right to live in peace on their territory and within their internationally recognized borders.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 24 that Russia had expected the previous day's peace talks in London to unravel into a major scandal, but instead Ukraine and its allies showed a shared commitment to work towards peace.

"Yesterday, there was a meeting in London, and European countries were present, including Ukraine, Britain, France, Germany, and the United States," Zelensky said during a press conference in South Africa on April 24.

"It was not easy, but it was constructive. It ended not with disagreements, but with a desire to work further."

According to Reuters, Kyiv submitted a document to European partners on April 22 reaffirming that it would not enter negotiations on territorial issues until a "full and unconditional ceasefire" is achieved.

Ukraine would like to have a "common understanding that Russia is the aggressor," President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a wide-ranging interview with American commentator Ben Shapiro released on April 24.

"(Y)ou shouldn't be saying that Ukraine and Russia started this war, I believe that it's painful for our people to hear," Zelensky added.

U.S. President Donald Trump and the White House have made inflammatory comments, claiming Ukraine shares the blame for Russia's war. On Feb. 18, Trump said Ukraine "should have never started" Russia's war.

Lavrov noted that a peace deal is still being negotiated, but that it is "moving in the right direction."

"(W)e are busy with this exact process and the United States did not spell out the elements of the deal," he claimed.

"Well, you don't trust the word of the president of the United States?" Lavrov said when pressed by journalists to confirm if Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

It has been reported that Witkoff will meet Putin in Moscow on April 25.

I didn’t want this to get lost in the last post or two by @PommyMommy. The paragraph I bolded reflects the way Trump lies. I am sure there is no pressure currently being put on Russia.

<snip>

Trump insisted he is working to end the war through private diplomacy.

When asked what he was asking of Putin to match the extensive concessions Ukraine has been pressured to make, Trump said: "I’m putting a lot of pressure. You don’t know what pressure I’m putting. They’re dealing. You have no idea what pressure I’m putting on Russia. We’re putting a lot of pressure ... and Russia knows that and some people who are close to it know or he wouldn’t be talking right now."
