Unless President Zelenskyy was involved in these talks about his country, they mean nothing. IMO

For nearly 75 years, it has been a distinctly American responsibility to have a four-star U.S. general oversee all NATO military operations in Europe — a command that began with then-World War II hero and future president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

But the Trump administration, according to two defense officials familiar with the planning and a Pentagon briefing reviewed by NBC News, is considering changing that.

The general now in this role, who also serves as the head of U.S. European Command, has been the primary commander overseeing support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

“For the United States to give up the role of supreme allied commander of NATO would be seen in Europe as a significant signal of walking away from the alliance,” retired Adm. James Stavridis, who served as SACEUR and head of European Command from 2009 to 2013, said in an email.

“It would be a political mistake of epic proportion, and once we give it up, they are not going to give it back"

Russian leader refuses to commit to a full month-long truce after high-stakes phone call with Donald Trump

[...]

In Moscow, senior Russian officials openly signalled their satisfaction with Putin’s conversation with Trump.

“It is official now – a PERFECT call,” Kirill Dmitriev, a senior aide close to Putin, wrote on X.

Earlier in the day Dmitriev said he expected to hold talks with Elon Musk soon about potential Mars missions.

He said Moscow was eager to collaborate with the SpaceX CEO as part of broader efforts to strengthen Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, and state nuclear corporation, Rosatom.

Russian and US officials have expressed interest in restoring economic cooperation once peace is achieved in Ukraine.

Despite Trump’s optimism that a solution to the war was within reach, longtime observers remained widely sceptical. Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Russia, wrote on X: “So, I hope we can finally lay to rest this absurd myth that Putin wants peace and Zelenskyy does not. Zelenskyy agreed to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Putin rejected that today.”

"More than half of Americans want the U.S. to help Ukraine regain territory it has lost since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, even if that means prolonging the conflict, new research shows.

An opinion poll from Gallup released this morning found 53% of respondents support the U.S. aiding Ukraine’s defense efforts, compared to 45% who want a quick end to the conflict even if that means conceding land to Russia.

Yesterday’s Gallup poll also showed that a record number of people believe the U.S. isn’t doing enough to help Ukraine in its war effort; 46% said assistance wasn’t enough, a rise of 16 points since December, in a sign some voters are turning against Trump’s self-described neutral stance."

Poll: Majority of Americans want U.S. to help Ukraine regain territory seized by Russia

Together with the First Lady @ZelenskaUA, I am on an official visit to our friends and principled allies—Finland.

Meetings will be held with President Alexander Stubb and First Lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb, Speaker Jussi Halla-aho and members of Parliament, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, government officials, and representatives of defense companies.

Key topics include defense support, investment in Ukrainian weapons production, and Ukraine's European integration, the Finnish expertise in developing a civil defense system and constructing shelters, strengthening sanctions against Russia, and coordinating efforts to bring the war to a just end. Europe must be at the negotiating table, and everything related to Europe's security should be decided together with Europe.

The First Lady’s program focuses on educational cooperation: expanding the Coalition of Ukrainian Studies, ensuring the security of educational spaces, arranging school shelters, and exchanging expertise on the school feeding system in Finland. There will be meetings with business leaders, philanthropists and representatives of the cultural community.

Right now, in many regions, you can literally hear what Russia truly needs. Around 40 "Shahed" drones are in our skies, and air defense is active.

Unfortunately, there have been hits, specifically on civilian infrastructure. A direct hit by a "Shahed" drone on a hospital in Sumy, strikes on cities in the Donetsk region, and attack drones currently in the skies over the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions.

It is these types of nighttime attacks by Russia that destroy our energy sector, our infrastructure, and the normal life of Ukrainians. And the fact that this night is no exception shows that the pressure on Russia must continue for the sake of peace.

Today, Putin effectively rejected the proposal for a full ceasefire. It would be right for the world to respond by rejecting any attempts by Putin to prolong the war.

Sanctions against Russia. Assistance to Ukraine. Strengthening allies in the free world and working toward security guarantees. And only a real cessation of strikes on civilian infrastructure by Russia, as proof of its willingness to end this war, can bring peace closer.

The call between the presidents began at 10 a.m. EDT and lasted "over an hour and a half," according to NBC.

"Under the leadership of President Putin and President Trump, the world has become a much safer place today!" Kirill Dmitriev, one of Russia's negotiators during talks with the U.S. in Saudi Arabia, wrote on X following the call.

"Europe should be at the table, and everything that concerns Europe's security should be decided together with Europe," Zelensky wrote on Telegram, announcing the visit.

The Kremlin has demanded a complete cessation of foreign military aid and intelligence to Ukraine as a "key condition for avoiding an escalation of the war," according to its statement released on March 18.

The two parties agreed to set up Russian and American expert groups to "resolve the war bilaterally."

"During the conversation, Donald Trump proposed a mutual refusal of the parties to the conflict to strike for 30 days on energy infrastructure facilities," the statement said.

In addition to halting foreign military aid and intelligence, Russia also called for Ukraine to cease the mobilization and rearmament of its military.

Washington announced on March 18 that another round of talks on the Russian war in Ukraine would "begin immediately" in the Middle East.

"Donald Trump supported Vladimir Putin’s idea to organize hockey matches in the USA and Russia between Russian and American players playing in the NHL and KHL," the Kremlin said in a readout.

MSNBC’S Rachel Maddow just discussed a poll that says only 3% of Americans like Putin, whom she called “Trump’s bestie.” There was more from the poll showing that they don’t approve of his handling of Ukraine. Clearly, Trump is out of touch with the American people.

Every evening she shows protests about various issues in towns around the country, including red states. She is interviewing Timothy Snyder, author of “On Tyranny.” Snyder is well worth following on his Substack.

Putin schooled DJT like he was 12 years old.

The world is safer after this meeting? Hardly. If you belive that I have a beautiful used Tesla to sell you.

"Donald Trump supported Vladimir Putin’s idea to organize hockey matches in the USA and Russia between Russian and American players playing in the NHL and KHL," the Kremlin said in a readout."

DJT gets a hockey game and Ukraine's people get no additional security or break at all. The Russain bear just gets bigger and bigger at the gates with Trump's little coyote yapping around the bear's heels.

Zelensky also said that Putin's rejection of Washington's 30-day ceasefire plan signaled the Kremlin's desire to "issue ultimatums" rather than negotiate peace in good faith.

"I would really like President Trump to hear and see what Putin wants," Zelensky said.

"Putin wants to make several offensives in the Zaporizhzhia direction, in the east, in the Kharkiv and Sumy directions. Why? ... In order to put maximum pressure on Ukraine and then issue ultimatums from a position of strength."

Trump and Putin share a "mutual interest" in normalizing relations between Washington and Moscow due to "the special responsibility of Russia and the United States for ensuring security and stability in the world," the Kremlin's statement reads.

"In this context, a wide range of areas in which our countries could establish interaction was considered. A number of ideas were discussed that are moving towards the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the economy and energy sector."

Zelensky's comments followed a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who discussed the possibilities of a temporary ceasefire. Afterwards, Washington and Moscow announced that they planned to hold negotiations in the Middle East "immediately."

"I don't want to offend anyone, but I don't want us to be on Putin's menu," Zelensky said.

"We are not a salad ... We are an independent state. Without us, I think it's wrong to negotiate."

I have a difficult time understanding how there isn't a single person around Trump that has a hard time with this. The FBI, the CIA, everyone in his circle... they all hear these phone calls or know what's going on. How are they all just okay with this?
Agree 100%

Putin agrees to 30-day ceasefire in attacks on energy infrastructure, but long lists of conditions, demands remain for further progress

The Kremlin readout, in Russian, is more extensive, and gives us a glimpse into Putin’s arguments – and a long list of conditions and demands on his side.

It says the Russian side “outlined a number of significant points” requiring further consideration, including on “effective control” over any ceasefire along the line of conflict, and Russia’s demand to stop mobilisation of Ukrainians and rearming of its armed forces alongside its broader request to “eliminate the root causes of the crisis.”

The statement also added Moscow’s “key condition” to prevent further escalation of the conflict in a demand to “completely cease” foreign military aid and intelligence sharing for Ukraine.

But the readout confirms that Putin has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure, and says the Russian leader has already issued relevant orders.

The Kremlin’s text also says that Putin “responded constructively” to proposal of a ceasefire at sea, with further negotiations expected on this issue.

The statement also says that Putin informed Trump of plans for a Russian-Ukrainian swap of 175 prisoners of war on each side, and “as a gesture of goodwill” a further release of 23 “seriously wounded” Ukrainian servicemen.

The readout also covered their discussions on the Middle East and the Red Sea, as well as broader push to “normalise bilateral relations.”

Putin has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure
I bet he has. Because Ukraine are winning that part of the war with their drones and knobbling Russian energy plants. MOO

Good to see Zelensky calling Trump out for being all hot air and noise, but no action.

Putin walked all over him, but lets him humiliate himself by declaring there was great progress.

Putin has the chess board planned out for the next 3 years. Trump actually thinks he is a player. Hah.

Trump is a fool. Putin and Xi have the moves mapped out for the next couple of years.

They are humoring the greedy and very needy Trump. Putin has a deep psychological profile on him that can predict his every reaction.

Bundestag Approves Historic Constitutional Changes to Lift Defense Spending Restrictions

The German Parliament has approved a financial package allocating €500 billion in investments for defense and infrastructure.

To pass the package, more than two-thirds of the votes were required to ease the constitutional debt restrictions, allowing Germany to plan significantly higher security expenditures.

"This is a war against Europe, not just a war against Ukraine's territorial integrity," — said Friedrich Merz.

"The glory of American people lies in their ability to protect the weak from the abuse of the strong. This is something Trump will never understand."
