would you have room for another 2? There’s no such thing as cellars around here.

My neighbors have an old stone outbuilding that's been turned into a small sauna. It'll be a tight squeeze but I think we'll all fit, until the dogs & cats start fighting.

Exactly - If Putin does manage to take Ukraine he'll have even more Nato members on his border.
Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia.
Right!? Does he not realize that? Oh wait...of course he does.

<modsnip -quoted post removed>

<modsnip> Tulsi Gabbard was a Democratic presidential contender and the words she speaks are her own. She served in the military and she now serves in Congress. That alone should be enough to listen to her.

She's well-informed about the situation, she knows the history, and she wants to minimize deaths and escalation.

People are dying. I think it's worth listening to those who understand what's happening and why.

These are TG's own words regarding her foreign policy.

"In short, when it comes to the war against terrorists, I am a hawk. When it comes to counterproductive wars of regime change, I'm a dove."

So either TG has a very short memory or she doesn't understand what forms 'regime change' take. By any definition, what Putin is doing, is an extreme form of regime change where he's personally willing to get his hands dirty this time and draw a line in the sand. She is being disingenuous at best or self serving at worst.

Here's a comment from a TripAdvisor post:

"In Poland 88 k refugees crossed the border yesterday. Different sources give different totals, but it's 150-200 k between Wednesday and today.

No trouble in Poland (fuel, banks etc).

A personal comment: these people in many (most of the) cases go to their relatives and friends living in Poland. Apparently, the Polish labour market can accommodate 500-700k of them. To all those who fear "middle-east"-style humanitarian catastrophe: it's not the case."

And

"The most important fact: we observe an increase in russian troll activity. Read twice, think twice, don't believe in posts from unknown people or first-time posters.

As far as the current situation is concerned:

1. It's business and life as usual. No signs of war in Poland, except for increased military activity in the air and at the borders - which is kind of normal and expected.

2. Businesses open, restaurants open, museums open, hotels open, banking system fully operational. No martial law or anything like that.

3. Long lines at (SOME) gas stations, due to expected fuel price increase and increased activity from russian trolls. For some strange reasons, apparently, only some stations are affected, mostly in Eastern Poland. In Warsaw, you can encounter a long line at one station while the one next to it is empty.

This is a media panic and I expect it to end soon.

4. Similarly, some ATMs ran out of cash e.g. this morning. Considering that our payment system is mostly cashless I don't think it is an issue.

Government reports expect 1 Mio ( 1 million) refugees. The borders are open for Ukrainian citizens, a number of measures have been introduced to simplify border procedures.

5. Russia closed their airspace to Polish aircraft. LOT has cancelled their flights to Moscow and St Petersburg. The flights to the Far East airports may be affected - for any updates see the LOT airline website.

Poland (and all other countries) has closed the airspace to Soviet airlines, this will severely impact flights to/from Russia - they have to make by-passes over the Baltic Sea."

I hope the mods can allow this, it's good to read a boots-on-the-ground post from a TripAdvisor Destination Expert in Warsaw

A guy on the Bernadette Walker thread posted a map of old abandoned bunkers in this area. There’s one about 3 miles east of me. I’m seriously thinking of checking it out, although I expect it’s flooded after the weather we’ve had recently.

I remember digging up the remnants of an old Anderson shelter in my parents garden when I was around 11 or so,my neighbour explained to me what it was and I remember thinking how we wouldn't need anything like that again as we dismantled it for the tip. If only naive 11 year old me could see the future eh!

Ukraine refugees to receive help from Franklin Graham's humanitarian aid nonprofit

Samaritan’s Purse volunteers who are on the ground and providing aid in Ukraine estimate that close to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees have crossed over to Poland.

"It’s a continual stream of people," Graham said.

"And the problem is with Moldova, Romania and Poland — they’re just not set up to handle this refugee crisis."

Samaritan's Purse in North Carolina is on the ground and talking to the Ministry of Health in Ukraine. They are also working with over 3,200 churches in Ukraine and are getting ready to deploy 5 field hospitals and other medical supplies as they get a cargo aircraft ready for the flight to the Poland-Ukraine border.

The fight for Kyiv
Russian forces arrived near Obolon on the outskirts of Kyiv on Friday, but so far have not advanced into the centre of the capital.

Strike from the north
From the north, Russian troops crossed the border into Ukraine at the three-way junction between Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, at Senkivka.

Strike from the south
An advance from Mariupol to the east would create a land bridge between Crimea and territory held by pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Russian troops around Ukraine
Russia is now in full control of significant parts of Ukraine's territory.

After Ukraine's air defences and other military infrastructure came under attack on Thursday, columns of tanks moved into position, backed up by artillery and air power.

Yes. But have they actually ever killed wives and children? I know P is crazy right now, but have the Russians ever killed wives or children, that's what I'm wondering. ??
I don't want to argue, just curious about that.
They tried killing Yulia Skripal, daughter of the KGB defector and spy, Skripal snr

EXCELLENT DIAGRAM !

Wow, Kyiv is so so close to Belarus. This is very concerning.

Yes, to my shame, I didn't realize it, either. From the standpoint of strategy, not the greatest idea. Some Belarusians invaded as well.
I saw videos of communications of Ukrainians with Russians and Belarusians. The tragedy of warring against "us Slavs, like you" is not lost on either side. A Ukrainian, dressed in green stitched coat, in a winter "ushanka" hat, standing in front of a young Belarus guy, dressed in the same way, and saying, "why did you come here? I live here, live...", and the younger man turning back... this is exactly what no one wants to experience, i presume.

Well, that doesn't really matter now, does it. We all know what side Belarus is on.
Always have been. Always will be.
