There is a unique history between Russia and PepsiCo. Here are some examples. I am unsure what pacts may still be in place.

————

Because there is no way to convert such a massive amount of Soviet cash into dollars, PepsiCo agreed to take its profits in vodka and Soviet-built ships.

The Soviet Union will build at least 10 ships, mostly oil tankers in the 25,000- to 65,000-metric ton range, to help finance the estimated $1 billion that PepsiCo plans to invest in the project.

The ships would then be sold or leased by PepsiCo, working together with a Norwegian partner, on the international market.

Foreign exchange credits from the sale and leasing of the ships would also partly be used for initial investment in two Pizza Hut restaurants scheduled to open this year in Moscow, a PepsiCo-Soviet joint venture.

PepsiCo's exclusive rights to sell Russian vodka in the United States will be extended for another 10 years in the pact.

PepsiCo's intended purchase of Wimm-Bill-Dann is its biggest acquisition outside the United States and one of the most important deals ever struck outside the Russian energy sector.

PepsiCo on December 2 said that it had agreed to pay $5.4 billion for Russia's largest dairy and baby food producer. The takeover would enable PepsiCo to become not only the country's largest food-and-beverage business but also expand further into eastern Europe and the former Soviet states. Wimm-Bill-Dann -- named in honor of its founder's love for tennis -- controls just over 40% of Russia's juice market and 30% of the dairy market.

So Pepsi-Cola is in the oil business too. It just gets all too confusing. Sounds like Pepsi will never be free from Russia, way too entangled now. Putin doesn't realize just how much damage HIS vision of a "Russian World" is costing his people. Everything is becoming integrated but he just wants to stand alone and be the boss instead of a leader.

Valerie Hopkins on Twitter - @NYTimes Moscow correspondent currently in Ukraine.
Across Ukraine, I have been meeting people w close relatives in Russia who refuse to believe the extent of the violence their state is perpetrating.
Cities suffer missile attacks, mothers fear for sons, but fathers, sisters, brothers respond w denial.

Katsiurin published phone calls w his father, along with an FAQ for how to talk to relatives in Russia w/o getting angry to convince them of the truth. There are 11m Russians with Ukrainian relatives, according to his analysis, enough for real resistance. Папа, поверь — Dad, believe (papapover.com)

I can't overstate how common this experience seems to be. I was delayed moving hotel rooms by writing this piece. I mentioned it to the young woman who had come to politely ask me to leave. "Oh," she said, "I have the same problem w my father in Russia."

Brazilian politician’s sexist remarks about Ukraine refugees spark outrage | Ukraine | The Guardian
''A prominent member of the Brazilian right is facing calls to resign after he was exposed in leaked audio messages making a succession of callous and misogynistic remarks about Ukrainian refugees during a purportedly humanitarian mission to the recently invaded country.''

''In one recording, the politician says: “I’ve just crossed the border on foot between Ukraine and Slovakia. Bro, I swear to you … I’ve never seen anything like it in terms of beautiful girls. The refugee queue … it’s like 200metres-long or more of just total goddesses … It’s some incredible **** … The queue outside Brazil’s best nightclub … doesn’t come close to the refugee queue here.”

In a second excerpt Do Val says: “Let me tell you, they’re easy because they’re poor.”

In a third he makes obscene remarks about female security officials at the Ukraine/Slovakia border, before adding: “Just unbelievable, dude. As soon as this war’s over, I’m coming back.”
Disgusting maggot! JMO

Ukrainians fleeing Ukraine are already being interviewed by investigators in anticipation of a future war crimes trial of Vladimir Putin, along with his top officials and generals.

The prosecutor of the international criminal court (ICC) in The Hague has opened an investigation, after a petition by an unprecedented 39 member states, and will almost certainly receive the most governmental support.

I don't think he should have been put in that position, but I do think that he had to resign, given the current situation. Another casualty of Putin's war.
I see the video of Ukrainian parents in hospital being told their little boy is dead from injuries from bombing or the one that I saw today showing civilians on the sidewalk of a street getting bombed...I see and hear about more of the same and think, he, the conductor, can take a side. AJMO and we can agree to disagree. I respect your opinion.

Ah, yes there was some diplomate that they had to gather from NYC even though he didn't have the same Monday March 7 deadline the other "diplomat-spies" had.

Will be nice to get that plane and them out of the US.

I didn't know about the NYC one.

I've read the explanations about Starbucks and McDonalds and I still think they need none of my money for being so mealymouthed about it. Like the musical director who quit his posts at the Bolshoi and in Toulous.

Pepsi Co is another bag of worms and I feel no loyalty to that brand and ALL it's subsidaries. I might miss the Sabra hummus, but not anything else.

Russian Shelling Kills Ukrainian Civilians Fleeing Irpin (rferl.org)
Shells rained down on Ukrainian civilians as they fled from Russian troops advancing on the town of Irpin, northwest of Kyiv. Cameraman Andriy Dubchak captured the moment a shell landed on March 6, killing at least three people, including two children. The Russian military claims it does not target Ukrainian civilians.

The family's deaths in Irpin, north-west of Kyiv, happened when Russian mortar shells targeted a damaged bridge that people were using in an effort to escape the violence..

Attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure - such as schools and hospitals - is against the Geneva Conventions, which are treaties agreed by all countries that are supposed to regulate war.

As well as the WHO, other non-government organisations have also reported attacks on civilian targets.

Amnesty International says it has verified various attacks - including cluster munitions hitting a kindergarten and nursery, and a ballistic missile hitting a hospital.

Ukraine: Russia has attacked schools and hospitals, says deputy PM

I'm so happy I'm not anyway near him. I hate men who become red-faced, foot-stamping, smashing their fists on the table, if things don't go the way they want or they don't get what they want. I can totally see that in Putin....

Really- I’m in Birkdale, Southport home of the Royal Birkdale golf club and the Open and between Birkdale and Formby ( where a lot of premiership footballers live ) they are always priced higher . Drive 25 miles to Liverpool and it’s quite a bit cheaper. Formby has the premiership footballers and Birkdale has the best footballers of old living up the road from me - Kenny Dalgliesh
( LFC) and Alan Hansen ( LFC) and Mark Lawrenson ( LFC)
Showing my age now !

Argh, my husband is a lifelong Man Utd fan, ssshh ;):D.

Someone on my niece's fb has just posted that fuel near her is £1.59 a litre and she only lives a village or two over from me!

They aren’t, as far as I know, in the oil business. It was the largest deal outside of the energy sector. They are the largest food business in Russia. For them to step out may be a bit more of a challenge than other entities.

Former CEO Donald Kendall was awarded the Order of Friendship in Moscow in 2oo4 by Putin himself. It would indeed be significant, symbolically speaking, for PepsiCo to back out.

Again, another huge reason for them to make a big impact. The current CEO of PepsiCo is a very different person than Kendall and after watching a special about her, I came away thinking all she wants to do is sell bad food and drinks to you and tell you it's good for you. She would have done well at a major tobaccco company.

We had a dog a few years ago that developed rage syndrome and had to be put down. I say that because my experience is just with a dog and it was terrifying and dangerous. I wonder if humans can develop something similar?
