At a makeshift basement bomb shelter in Ukraine’s capital, at least 20 babies born to surrogate mothers are waiting for their foreign parents to be able to travel to the war-torn country and take them home.

Some just a few days old, the infants are well cared for, but even below ground the blasts of occasional shelling can be heard clearly.

Many of the surrogacy center’s nurses are also stranded in the shelter because it’s too dangerous to travel to and from their homes. Ukrainian troops have been resisting Russian forces in Kyiv’s suburbs as they attempt to encircle the city.

Ukraine live updates: US fears possible Russian concentration camps (usatoday.com)
"Russia continues the genocide of the Ukrainian people and civilians of Mariupol," the post said. "Every war criminal will answer for his crimes against humanity, against the people of Mariupol."

The council also claimed Russian soldiers have forced more than a thousand city residents to be relocated to Russia.

"The occupiers illegally took people out of the Levoberezhny district and a shelter in the building of a sports club where more than a thousand people (mostly women and children) were hiding from constant bombing," the council said.''

''Ukrainian passports were taken from people who were given a piece of paper that "has no legal weight and is not recognized throughout the civilized world," the city council said. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Sunday that she could not confirm those reports but expressed concern about the prospect of Russian-organized "concentration and prisoner camps."

U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," said it is "unconscionable for Russia to force Ukrainian citizens into Russia and put them in what will basically be concentration and prisoner camps."

Russian naval commander, 51, who helped Mariupol siege shot dead, Ukraine says - World News - Mirror Online
A deputy commander of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has been shot dead, Ukrainian officials say.

First rank captain Andrey Paliy, 51, is the only senior naval officer allegedly killed in the war in Ukraine, although Kyiv claims to have slain five army generals.

One account said that he had been involved with Russian marines attacks near Mariupol.

However, the exact circumstances of his reported death are not known.

Paliy was born in Kyiv and in 1993 refused to take the Ukrainian military oath, instead serving in the Russian Northern Fleet.

Great article.

People always bring up that Zelenskyy was just an actor before becoming president, and that he now uses those skills to effectively convey his messages to the world.

I think that's great, if that's what led to his ability to get his message across. After all, Ronald Reagan was an actor, too, and his "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" is one of the most memorable and effective lines from his eight years as the United States president.

IMO though, the principal reason for Zelenskyy's heroism is his courage. Out in the streets of Kyiv, refusing offers of sanctuary outside of Ukraine, visiting with his troops, visiting hospitals, clearly getting no sleep as he wills himself to address world leaders everywhere. Knowing that at literally any second he can be killed where he stands. It's unbelievable to me, how brave and determined he is to keep his country alive. I stand in awe.

What about the safety of the mothers of these infants? The article says some of the babies are only days old. Apparently Ukraine has a thriving surrogate industry.

Here is an excerpt from another article on this, similar to the one @PommyMommy just posted above.

20 babies from surrogate moms in bomb shelter

In peacetime, Ukraine has a thriving surrogate industry, one of the few countries where foreigners can contract women to carry their pregnancies. Now at least 20 of those babies are stuck in a makeshift bomb shelter in Ukraine’s capital, waiting for parents to travel into the war zone to pick them up.

<snipped>

Nurse Lyudmilla Yashchenko says they’re staying in the bomb shelter to save their lives, and the lives of the babies, some of whom are just days old. They have enough food and baby supplies for now, and can only hope and wait for the newborns to be picked up, and the war to end.

There is something in it. When the Communist party expired overnight, the only organized structure in the country was its “avenging sword”, the KGB. Silently, it took over. Ask where the oligarchs came from? But the problem is not even this, but the vertical structure all USSR bureaucratic institutions.
What is different in Ukraine? Probably the fact that the Western part, never Russian-speaking, former part of Austro-Hungary, contributed into getting rid of old bureaucrats faster?
So now because of far-reaching sanctions, the dictator, his military, some of the oligarchs and elites will now nationalize everything and back to communism they go. Close the borders, keep monies in country and try and absorb more from the former USSR states, by way of invasion, to get back the glory days of their national hero Stalin? All very bleak and it could come to be, IMO...
OR a Russian revolution needs to happen in favor of a more open country that embraces world views, not censorship and bullies. Like what Ukraine did <3

@PommyMommy I am speechless. "This was my dad." "This was my daughter."

That sounds like Zelenskyy's voice. I know speaking English is not as easy for him, but he will do whatever must be done to reach the world.

I only pray that his optimism for the rebirth of Ukraine is realized and he is there to see it.

On a separate note, @PommyMommy, I just want to thank you for your contributions to WS. You are such a pillar of this community. IMO, and I'm sure in the opinion of many of us.

Zelensky wants Israel to take a stronger stance against Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky addressed the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, in a video address. In it, he spoke out, among other things, about Israel's refusal to impose sanctions on Russia

The Ukrainian president also drew a comparison with the Second World War. According to him, the Kremlin is talking about a final solution for Ukraine in the same way that the Nazis talked about the "final solution" for the Jews in Germany.

"We can ask you why we are not getting weapons from you, why Israel has not imposed strong sanctions on Russia or pressured Russian companies," Zelensky said. "That choice is yours, but you have to live with the answer." According to him, Israel's air defense system is the best in the world and could protect Ukraine.

Until now, however, Israel has taken a mediating and neutral role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Netherlands houses tens of billions in assets of sanctioned Russians

  • More than 80 billion euros in assets are parked in the Netherlands that are related to Russian companies. This is reported by the Financieele Dagblad based on its own research. According to the newspaper, more than half of the assets can be linked to persons and organizations on the sanctions list of the European Union.

Among them are the CEO of the popular social network VK in Russia and the chairman of the oil company Rosneft. The latter is also called "the Russian Darth Vader" and "grey cardinal of the Kremlin", because of his position of power in Russia. The companies of the two have stored several billion in assets in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has frozen 200 million euros in Russian money so far, Klaas Knot, director of De Nederlandsche Bank, said in Nieuwsuur last week . That money only concerned bank balances. Experts tell the FD that they suspect that most of the money of Russian oligarchs in the Netherlands is in shares.

Most of the links with Russia here are through trust offices, which provide various financial services for companies, but are also often associated with letterbox companies. Trust offices have since been forced to stop providing financial services to Russian customers.

US not optimistic about Ukraine talks as Zelenskiy ups pressure on Biden | Ukraine | The Guardian
March 20 2022
''Joe Biden’s ambassador to the United Nations warned on Sunday there was little immediate hope of a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine, as pressure continued to build on the US president ahead of a crucial Nato summit in Europe this week.''

''Linda Thomas-Greenfield was reacting on CNN’s State of the Union to an interview with Volodymr Zelenskiy in which the Ukrainian president told the same network only talks would end the war and its devastating toll on civilians.

“We have to use any format, any chance, to have the possibility of negotiating, of talking to [Russian president Vladimir] Putin,” Zelenskiy told Fareed Zakaria, the host of GPS. “If these attempts fail, that would mean that this is a third world war.”

''Thomas-Greenfield said she saw little chance of a breakthrough.

“We have supported the negotiations that President Zelenskiy has attempted with the Russians, and I use the word attempted because the negotiations seem to be one-sided, and the Russians have not leaned in to any possibility for a negotiated and diplomatic solution,” she said.

“We tried before Russia decided to move forward in this brutal attack on Ukraine and those diplomatic efforts were not responded to well by the Russians, and they’re not responding now. But we’re still hopeful that the Ukrainian effort will end this brutal war.”

The Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Turkey is doing some real effort to try to facilitate, support talks between Russia and Ukraine. It’s far too early to say whether these talks can lead to any concrete outcome.”

Now what are they going to do with those passports I wonder?

"The relentless bombardment of Mariupol prompted a local police officer, in a video verified by the Associated Press, to appeal for help to President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The city council also claimed Russian soldiers have forced more than a thousand city residents to be relocated to Russia.

"The occupiers illegally took people out of the Levoberezhny district and a shelter in the building of a sports club where more than a thousand people (mostly women and children) were hiding from constant bombing," the council said.

Interesting video with Z talking about his relatives who fought in WW2. He also talks about P’s “denazification” and the hypocrisy of it all, as in who is the one acting like “Nazis”, doing exactly what was done in Leningrad.

Note @1:24 “Several thousand residents taken by force to Russia”

Are these maybe the people being tortured and abused as alleged on Twitter? I saw a video on Twitter of people lying on their stomachs with their pants down, rear ends exposed, supposedly including women and children, being beaten, as you hear laughing in the background. I clicked away immediately so not sure if real. I think it was. Jmo.
