Food Prices Soar to Record Levels on Ukraine War Disruptions | Business News | US News

The United Nations says prices for world food commodities like grains and vegetable oils have reached their highest levels ever because of Russia's war in Ukraine.

ROME (AP) — Prices for food commodities like grains and vegetable oils reached their highest levels ever last month largely because of Russia's war in Ukraine and the “massive supply disruptions” it is causing, threatening millions of people in Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere with hunger and malnourishment, the United Nations said Friday.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said its Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices for a basket of commodities, averaged 159.3 points last month, up 12.6% from February. As it is, the February index was the highest level since its inception in 1990.

FAO said the war in Ukraine was largely responsible for the 17.1% rise in the price of grains, including wheat and others like oats, barley and corn. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for around 30% and 20% of global wheat and corn exports, respectively.

While predictable given February's steep rise, “this is really remarkable,” said Josef Schmidhuber, deputy director of FAO's markets and trade division. “Clearly, these very high prices for food require urgent action.”...

Hi @LadyL,

Other than clicking on the thumbnail to enlarge it, then swiping with two fingers to enlarge it further, I have no idea. I'm very Computers 101.

I'm sure everyone else will be able to tell you how! I just paused the video at that spot and took the screenshot, so maybe if you do that as well it will be more clear?

Waiting for the young and/or savvy ones here to show the way!
Can you read this one?

The big difference between WWII and now is that in WWII, the US mainland (other than the Aleutian Islands) was not directly attacked by a foreign force. There were no intercontinental missiles (other than the limited range V1 and V2), and while other nations suffered bombings and destruction, the US and Canada were pretty much unscathed. If we engaged in another world war, we would be attacked in our own cities. That has not happened since the war of 1812.

Putin is a loose cannon. If he is backed into a corner or thinks he will lose this war or be taken out by his own government, he would most likely not hesitate to take everyone else with him, including his own people. I hope I am wrong, but I don't see him hiding in a bunker and shooting himself in the head like another dictator in history did. Despots rarely agree to suffer public and national humiliation for failure.

What is interesting (if one can say that) about this war is that Russia's military looks like a paper tiger completely stopped by citizen soldiers with limited weapons. He has resorted to rocket attacks like a coward, but his stockpile is limited, so when they run out, who knows what will happen?

The West is intimidated by Putin’s threat of nuclear weapons, but this is not a one sided conflict in that respect.
We should remind him about our own nuclear weapons. I don’t think they want to be turned into a nuclear wasteland either.

I don't think the Russian people have a clue what is going on and certainly don't have any power to stop it. The FSB and Army know, but as of yet are not willing or able to stop it. I certainly hope that Army commanders would NOT carry out an order for nuclear strikes, limited or strategic. But who knows. Putin is all in on this.

No one has the arsenal of nuclear weapons that Russia and the US have.

I think they look like a paper tiger because so many in Putin's military have embezzled the public's money, a monkey-see monkey-do game they learned from their leader.

I do hope you're that their stockpile is limited and that China and North Korea stay out of that weapons arena. AJMO

Be very sure that the next country Russia walks into and over, and there WILL be a next, ... Putin will use the same threat and, once again, many more thousands of INNOCENTS will die in war crimes ...

He went in to Ukraine precisely because we sat on our collective duffs and did nothing when he went into Chechnya, Moldova, Kuril Islands, Georgia, Crimea ...

Because he now knows that he can get away with it when he uses that threat. We've allowed him to via our inaction. Vile.

Ukraine demands 'firm global response' against Russia for deadly train station strike | CBC News
''Ukraine called for more weapons and harsher sanctions after it blamed Russia for a missile attack that killed at least 52 people at a train station packed with women, children and the elderly fleeing the threat of a Russian offensive in the east.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike in Kramatorsk in the eastern region of Donetsk a deliberate attack on civilians. The city's mayor estimated about 4,000 people were gathered there at the time.

The U.S., European Union and Britain condemned the attack which took place on the same day European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv to show solidarity and accelerate Ukraine's membership process.

"We expect a firm global response to this war crime," Zelensky said in a video posted late on Friday.

"Any delay in providing … weapons to Ukraine, any refusals, can only mean the politicians in question want to help the Russian leadership more than us," he said, calling for an energy embargo and all Russian banks to be cut off from the global system.''

Is it?? Not going to offend anyone here, but,..I grew up close to the border of Germany and know how much Germans still live under the stigma of WWII.

-In a nutshell-

Maybe this..gives an insight of people who do not know how much history can be generation haunted ..:

"Wissman, author of "Not Quite Ready for Combat: How the German army became a rubbish army," says World War II not only destroyed the German military, but left a residue of shame around its future. "And actually, you can see a lot of problems which the German army has now stems from that time because we never really got comfortable with having an army."

With war on its doorstep, Germany plans a major military buildup

BTW,there are a lot of Dutch farmers in Ukraine and they all saying, this is happening right now.. starvation "holodomor" will be used, just like Stalin did.

"During the fighting in Ukraine, Russia deliberately aims its weaponry at the country's food infrastructure. The aim is to cause hunger, says EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, who makes a comparison with the famine that Joseph Stalin caused in this region 90 years ago."

Janusz Wojciechowski: 'Rusland zet honger in als agressiemiddel'

The starvation of a nation: Putin uses hunger as a weapon in Ukraine

In the meanwhile...
Someone who lived in Ukraine and had to flee, a few days after the Russians attacked,is collecting seeds..:

So it was a joint conference of UK and Germany saying sending tanks "wouldn't be appropriate". Whatever is meant by that.

I'm glad that UK is sending more Starstreak anti-aircraft weapons and anti-tank missiles.

I really hope NATO countries have a true handle on the situation. I tend to agree with the Ukrainians that the only thing Putin stops for is a show of strength. He's regrouping and in my opinion wants to cut off Ukraine from the Bkack Sea and take all the way to Odesa. NATO cannot let that happen. AJMO

Something, somewhere has to give...the Russian military needs to be stalled along the seaside and then pushed back. They need to be forced to abandon that plan. I'm not a military person but those are my thoughts.

I can understand them wanting to take the land bridge from Donvas to Crimea. That would give the Crimea water access, that makes some sense for the people of Crimea's needs no matter whom their leaders are...but not cutting off Ukraine's access to the sea. That makes no real sense and its only for retribution and punishment for standing up to Putin's military and making them look inadequate. Again AJMO
