Russia sends warplanes to Syria for huge naval drills in Med

The Russian military on Tuesday deployed long-range nuclear-capable bombers and fighter jets carrying state-of-the-art hypersonic missiles to its air base in Syria for massive naval drills in the region amid soaring tensions with the West over Ukraine.
Long-range, nuclear-capable Tu-22M3 bombers and MiG-31 fighter jets carrying the latest Kinzhal hypersonic cruise missiles landed at the Russian air base of Hemeimeem in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia as part of the drills. The military says the Kinzhal has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (about 1,250 miles) and flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it hard to intercept.

Vladimir Putin’s $125M Yacht Leaves German Port

''Russian president Vladimir Putin’s superyacht took off from a port in Germany, heading home to Russia. Experts say moving the $125 million vessel is an effort to prevent it from being seized by the west, should Russia invade Ukraine. The ship has been docked at a boatyard in Germany since December for refurbishment, but made a hurried exit upon completion. Putin’s official salary as president of Russia is $135,000 but he has reportedly amassed a fortune of $225 billion.

Twitter unveils version of site that can bypass Russia block | AP News
Twitter has launched a privacy-protected version of its site to bypass surveillance and censorship after Russia restricted access to its service in the country.

Russia has blocked access to Facebook and has limited Twitter in an attempt to try to restrict the flow of information about its war in Ukraine. Both companies have said they are working on restoring access to people inside Russia even as they restrict the country’s state media from their services.

Known as an “onion” service, users can access this version of Twitter if they download the Tor browser, which allows people to access sites on what is also referred to as the “dark web.” Instead of .com, onion sites have a 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 suffix. Regular websites, including Twitter.com, are also accessible on Tor, but the 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 versions are made specifically for Tor and prevent the site from being spoofed by malicious actors.

Warning Update: Russia May Conduct a Chemical or Radiological False-Flag Attack as a Pretext for Greater Aggression against Ukraine | Institute for the Study of War (understandingwar.org)

Key takeaway:
The Kremlin has set informational conditions to blame Ukraine for a Russian-conducted or Russian-fabricated chemical or radiological false-flag attack against civilians as a pretext for further Russian escalation. The Kremlin is likely still evaluating this course of action but is building out the necessary conditions to justify broader violence against civilians. That risk must be addressed. The United States and NATO must “pre-bunk” such Kremlin efforts, destroy in advance Moscow’s efforts to create informational cover for escalation, and deter Russia’s potential use of a chemical or radiological weapon.

Recent Russian state media narratives have built upon a long-running Kremlin information operation to falsely claim that Ukraine, the United States, and NATO are plotting a chemical or radiological attack on Russia or Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. Russia may conduct or fabricate such an attack and blame Ukraine and NATO to justify additional aggression against Ukraine.

[...]

The United States and NATO must continue to orient around deterring and pre-bunking Russian false-flag attacks. The United States and its allies demonstrated the ability to pre-bunk and prevent Russian false-flag operations prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine but have less aggressively declassified and shared intelligence since the invasion began. The objective of earlier pre-bunking may have been to ensure that Western audiences did not believe Russian information operations to justify Russia’s invasion. That objective has been achieved. The United States and its allies should again aggressively leverage their superior intelligence to share information, this time to publicly reject Russian claims that Ukraine has any access to or intention to use chemical or radiological weapons. Such a Russian claim is less likely to gain traction in the current information environment, but aggressive US pre-bunking and deterrence efforts could still prevent Russian attempts to carry out a false-flag attack in the first place.

A veteran sniper with the Canadian Armed Forces has joined the ranks of a foreign legion in Ukraine, responding to president Volodymyr Zelenksky’s call for foreign fighters to combat the Russian assault.

The veteran identified as “Wali” entered Ukraine from Poland with a group of British and Canadian veterans last week, sheltering in a renovated home to join Ukraine forces and a growing battalion of volunteer citizen soldiers, according to the CBC.

Ukraine’s permanent representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on Tuesday issued a shocking letter to the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), warning that Russian forces in occupied Donetsk might use chemical weapons as a pretext to advance their war machinery in Ukraine.

“According to the intelligence information from the temporarily occupied Donetsk, the occupiers are handing out gas masks to local militants and the Russian military. There is a possibility of provocation, such as blowing up industrial tanks with chemicals,“ wrote Maksym Kononenko, Ukraine's ambassador to the OPCW.

The regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin has been aligned with the Syrian regime in the civil war unfolding since 2011 in the Syrian Arab Republic. Russia has played a key role in crushing opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, including aerial warfare targeting hospitals. The death toll is over 500,000 people and Assad's regime used chemical weapons numerous times to murder Syrians.

Putin has been accused of poisoning opponents of his regime with nerve agents.

Anonymous latest news: cyber warfare could lead Russia to cut itself off from the internet | The Independent

''Recently, the “biggest Anonymous op ever seen” was claimed as Russian news channels like Russia 24, Channel One, and Moscow 24, including streaming sites, showed footage of Russia’s actions in Ukraine as the invasion entered the 12th day.

“The hacking collective #Anonymous hacked into the Russian streaming services Wink and Ivi (like Netflix) and live TV channels Russia 24, Channel One, Moscow 24 to broadcast war footage from Ukraine [today],” it announced on Twitter with video footage.

Peace talks between the two countries are ongoing between the two nations, but it remains unclear how long the bloodshed will last. Currently, these cyber groups have said that they stand with Ukraine against Russia’s powerful online forces - causing disruption to stop the country’s own attacks against Ukraine and the West''

Students plot man’s escape from Kyiv
World geography students at a Winnipeg high school put their mapping skills to good use by transforming a classroom into a command centre to help a man escape the war-torn capital of Ukraine.

Karen Robb, an educational assistant at Fort Richmond Collegiate, recently discovered her birth father, Gary Milani, has been living in eastern Europe for more than 20 years.

“The first actual time I heard his voice in my whole life, I had to compete with the sound of bombs and machine guns outside of his window,” Robb recalled, during a phone call Wednesday.

“I was trying to think out of the box, what I could do, how I could help from where I was,” she said. “It dawned on me that students in the geography class (at Fort Richmond), who are a bunch of whiz kids with tech devices, might be able to help.”

By Alex Gatopoulos
Published On 9 Mar 20229 Mar 2022

''The war in Ukraine has highlighted two things to Russia and the outside world: that Russia’s much-vaunted military revolution has been exaggerated and that Ukraine’s resistance to the invasion is total.

Russia’s military capabilities have been built up in Western eyes, particularly after its modernisation programme in the wake of the 2008 Georgian conflict. New equipment was ordered and training focused on realism as Russia’s armed forces were put on a more professional footing. A new doctrine, designed to give the military greater flexibility in responding to a variety of scenarios, was also developed.''

''Despite having an air force many times the size of Ukraine’s, Russia was unable to dominate the skies in the way necessary to protect the smooth and speedy advance of its mechanised columns of armour on the ground. These units now faced Ukrainian air strikes as they pushed deeper into the country.''

This lack of coordination between Russian air and ground units left gaps in the defensive shield around advancing Russian armour, also allowing Ukrainian ground forces to successfully attack Russian armed helicopters, destroying many and depriving Russian army units of their protection and support.''

PlayStation stopt met verzending van software en hardware in Rusland - NL Atsit

Suspension or cessation of product sales in Russia is fast becoming the norm for large companies, and PlayStation is the latest to join the pack. Following the lead of companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, Ubisoft, EA and many others, Sony Interactive Entertainment is suspending shipments of PlayStation products in Russia.

The suspension includes the shipment of both hardware and software. That means Sony will no longer ship hardware like the PS5 and its accessories and software like physical game discs to the country for the time being. But it doesn't stop there.

Sony will also stop operating the PlayStation Store in Russia. Exclude consumers from purchasing digital versions of games. Nintendo took the exact same approach and put the eShop in Russia in maintenance mode. Due to the payment processing system that the eShop uses in the region, the processing of rubles is suspended.
