US President Joe Biden holds a joint news conference with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv during a surprise visit to the capital to mark the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Biden visits Zelensky in Kyiv and says Putin 'dead wrong' on Ukraine war

The US president met Ukraine's Zelensky during the surprise trip and reaffirmed his support.

''The US will back Ukraine in its fight against Russia for "as long as it takes" President Joe Biden said as he made an unannounced and symbolic visit to the capital, Kyiv.

"We have every confidence you're going to continue to prevail," he said.

Mr Biden's first trip to Ukraine as president came days before the first anniversary of Russia's invasion.

He said President Putin had been "dead wrong" to think Russia could outlast Ukraine and its Western allies.''

A “people’s court” put Russian President Vladimir Putin on trial Monday for the crime of aggression over his invasion of Ukraine, in a symbolic move to close an “accountability gap” in the absence of an international tribunal with jurisdiction.

The court has no legal powers but prosecutors said they will present evidence that Putin committed the crime of aggression by ordering the invasion nearly a year ago, unleashing a devastating war that has killed thousands and left towns and cities in ruins.

“This is a crime that belongs in the annals of infamy. It is a crime that demands accountability,” said Drew White, a Canadian lawyer acting as one of the court’s prosecutors.

The court is scheduled to deliver a verdict on Friday, the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Putin was invited to participate in the hearing, but organizers got no response from the Russian embassy in The Hague.
