'Possibly 9,000 bodies in mass grave at Mariupol'
Local Ukrainian authorities say there may be as many as 9,000 bodies in a mass grave near the city of Mariupol. Yesterday there were still at least 200 graves.
Satellite images from the American company Maxar showed excavation work on a piece of land about 20 kilometers from Mariupol. The mayor of Mariupol says Russian soldiers are burying Ukrainians in mass graves outside the city to cover up "military crimes". President Zelensky says the war has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Mariupol residents.
Russian Defense Minister Shoygu said yesterday that Mariupol had fallen into the hands of Russian troops. President Putin said that "the operation to liberate Mariupol has been successful". The US president calls it doubtful whether Putin's claim is correct. "There is no evidence that Mariupol fell completely."

Zelensky warns against Russian fake referendum
Ukrainian President Zelensky says Russia wants to stage a fake independence referendum in the partially occupied territories in and around the cities of Kherson and Zaporizhzhya. He has called on residents not to give personal data to the Russians.
Russian soldiers would ask residents for their passports. "They're not doing that to help you. They want to fake a referendum on your territory. That's the reality. Be careful," Zelensky said. He speaks of an "organized comedy from Moscow".
In 2014, Russia presented a referendum on Crimea. A vast majority of voters would then have said they wanted to belong to Russia. That referendum was condemned by the Ukrainian government and the West.
