Russia-Ukraine war latest news: Zelenskiy urges Nato to implement no-fly zone after air base attack near Polish border | World news | The Guardian

British prime minister Boris Johnson has announced that the government will donate more than 500 mobile generators to Ukraine to help provide power for key buildings such as hospitals, shelters and water treatment plants.

The UK government has set up a new Ukraine electricity network support taskforce, including many of the leading power suppliers. They will provide the generators from their stocks, with many expected to be delivered via neighbouring countries. In total, they should provide enough power for 20,000 homes or equivalent buildings.

The prime minister said: “We are seeing the tragic consequences in Ukraine from [Vladimir] Putin’s grave mistake every day, and we will continue to do everything we can to support Ukraine’s resistance against this illegal invasion through economic, diplomatic and humanitarian measures, as well as providing defensive military equipment.

“We will now be sending generators to ease the difficulties caused by the current power outages and help keep vital services running so the people of Ukraine can continue to defend their country.”

Toxic Putin is going for bust. The west must stop him before this contagion spreads | Simon Tisdall | The Guardian

''Politically speaking, Vladimir Putin is a dead man walking. As dictators always do, he has fatally over-reached. Bunker-bound and bonkers, there’s no way back into the world for him. At home, too, he looks increasingly isolated.

But, militarily speaking, he’s not giving up. In Ukraine, the toxic president is going for bust. The worrying question: what will he do next?

Insofar as Putin still has a plan, it is to bomb and batter the Ukrainian people into submission, by whatever means necessary, as quickly as possible. If that requires using chemical weapons, such as chlorine gas, as in Syria, who can doubt he will do so. Last week’s Mariupol maternity hospital war crime was a harbinger of worse, perhaps far worse, to come.''

''The west must now maximise pressure on Putin – military as well as economic – as a matter of utmost urgency. Ukraine’s citizens and soldiers cannot be expected to hold out for very much longer without increased, all-round support. Ukraine’s future as an independent democratic state may be decided in the coming fortnight. So, too, may be the future of Putinism in Russia itself.''

The UK defence ministry has just released its latest defence intelligence update on the situation in Ukraine, claiming Russian naval forces are “effectively isolating Ukraine from international maritime trade”.

The report reads:

Russian naval forces have established a distant blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea coast, effectively isolating Ukraine from international maritime trade.

Russian naval forces are also continuing to conduct missile strikes against targets throughout Ukraine.

Russia has already conducted one amphibious landing in the Sea of Azov and could look to conduct further such operations in the coming weeks.

Kadyrov and his forces have been accused by international NGOs of serious human rights violations in the tightly controlled Caucasus republic. He is a former rebel turned Kremlin ally who has previously described himself as Putin’s “foot soldier” with a paramilitary force at his command.

Kara Alaimo: The U.S. families in limbo during the Ukraine-Russia crisis (nbcnews.com)
[...]

The Van Astens have been hosting the siblings they plan to adopt for holidays and summers in their home in the U.S. since 2018. The teenagers refer to them as their mom and dad. They say I love you. They keep in touch via phones the Van Astens purchased for them. Recently, their prospective son used that phone to text them that he feared being killed in the war.

[...]

The Ukrainian government has approved the Van Astens to adopt from the country. They are now up to where they need to take three trips to Ukraine as part of the formal adoption process, including a court hearing and medical and visa appointments. But now, with the country under attack and given the highest warning level for travel, the couple wants to get the children out of the country temporarily to keep them safe.

When the fighting broke out, the children were evacuated from their orphanage outside Sloviansk to another facility in Lviv.

[...]

The Van Astens would like to temporarily host the children they are working to adopt on B-2 visas — which they've received to enable them to make their past trips to the U.S. — but they need permission from both Ukraine and the U.S. to do so. They've been frantically writing to President Joe Biden and members of Congress to beg for help and asking their friends and family to write to their legislators, too. But they shouldn't have to mount this kind of campaign.

[...]

Of course, if the fighting ends and Ukraine wins the war, the children can return to Ukraine to complete the process. But for now, they shouldn't be kept in a country under siege while they have loving prospective parents who desperately want to provide them with safe homes.

[...]

It's unconscionable that Americans who are trying to complete their families and get children out of a war zone should have to beg their government for help at all.

How this Kherson baker is resisting the Russian onslaught without picking up a gun - CNN
[...]

For the past two weeks since the Russians invaded, he's been barely sleeping, working 20 hours a day to feed the people of Russian-occupied Kherson. Each day, the 28-year-old bakes thousands of loaves of bread, loads them into his truck or car, and drives them through the deserted streets, delivering them to people who are increasingly being cut off from outside food supplies as Russian forces choke the city of nearly 300,000.

[...]

"All parts of my body are hurting -- my wrists are hurting, and I am unable to open a door. That is why it is hard," Servetnyk told CNN Tuesday, after spending hours a day kneading and baking.

Before the war, Servetnyk was a successful chef -- he won Ukrainian MasterChef in 2019, and ran a pizza restaurant in Kherson. But on February 24, the Russians invaded Ukraine -- and his life changed.

[...]

Now Servetynyk begins each day at dawn, loading the back of his truck with golden loaves of bread baked either at his restaurant or the industrial bakery. Most of it is delivered for free to orphanages and elderly people on the outskirts of the city. Then he heads back to bake bread from midday late into the night.

[...]

His recipe for "victory bread" is already basic -- just made of flour, yeast, water and salt. Servetnyk is also being supported by donors from all over the world who help his team cover expenses such as fuel.

[...]

Even if Russians take Ukrainian land, they will not be able to take the Ukrainian people, he adds. When asked what Ukrainians are fighting for, he replied: "You should rather ask the Russians about it. We are fighting for our land... for our freedom."

Pregnant woman, baby die after Russia bombed maternity ward | AP News
MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — A pregnant woman and her baby have died after Russia bombed the maternity hospital where she was meant to give birth, The Associated Press has learned. Images of the woman being rushed to an ambulance on a stretcher had circled the world, epitomizing the horror of an attack on humanity’s most innocent.

In video and photos shot Wednesday by AP journalists after the attack on the hospital, the woman was seen stroking her bloodied lower abdomen as rescuers rushed her through the rubble in the besieged city of Mariupol, her blanched face mirroring her shock at what had just happened. It was among the most brutal moments so far in Russia’s now 19-day-old war on Ukraine.

The woman was rushed to another hospital, yet closer to the frontline, where doctors labored to keep her alive. Realizing she was losing her baby, medics said, she cried out to them, “Kill me now!”

Surgeon Timur Marin found the woman’s pelvis crushed and hip detached. Medics delivered the baby via cesarean section, but it showed “no signs of life,” the surgeon said.
