Russia-Ukraine war latest: Ukraine calls for more Nato help in meeting with US; western sanctions akin to declaration of war, says Putin – live | World news | The Guardian

41m ago 17:05

John Bolton, former US national security adviser under Donald Trump and, previously, anti-United Nations US ambassador to...the United Nations, speculates in an interview that Vladimir Putin was waiting before invading Ukraine for Trump to win a second term in the White House and pull the US out of NATO.

That didn’t happen so now he’s invaded anyway - though he waited more than a year (did he think, like fanatical Trumpists, that Trump was going to overturn the election result and return to the White House...?). So it seems outlandish. But worth noting in passing...

'Does Putin Want To Kill Us All?' Kharkiv Civilians Under Siege As Russia Changes Tactics (rferl.org)
With Russian and Ukrainian forces engaged in tough fighting for control of major cities across Ukraine, Moscow has shifted its tactics to increasingly rely on rockets, artillery, and air attacks to hit civilian infrastructure.

For Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city located in the country's northeast, this has meant an increasingly indiscriminate campaign that has seen civilians caught in the shelling of their homes, as rockets and artillery have rained down on supermarkets, schools, hospitals, apartment blocks, and churches.

[...]

Taxi drivers in the city are unwilling to take people to the train station to leave the city out of fear of taking fire, she said, and trains out of Kharkiv are not operating on a set schedule, making it difficult to plan an escape from the besieged city.

"It's very scary to come to the station and not go anywhere because you [might] have to get back home [quickly] and there is shelling all the time," Evsa said. "What does [Russian President Vladimir] Putin want -- to kill us all? Destroy everything? I don't understand the purpose [of this war]."

[...]

Ukrainian and Western forces say they believe Moscow is shifting tactics to a new strategy of pummeling civilian areas to try and demoralize Ukrainian resistance and reignite Russia's stagnant military advance. "Given the slowing down of the offensive and the resistance of the Ukrainians, Russia is changing its tactics," Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said in a March 5 statement.

Kharkiv's Freedom Square, the center of the city's public life, was hit by what Ukrainian officials say was a Russian cruise missile. Other cities in Ukraine's east are also the sites of intense fighting and are seeing their residential areas come under intense shelling as they are encircled by Russian forces.

In launching an invasion into Ukraine, the Kremlin has said its demands for ending the war consist of Ukraine recognizing the 2014 annexation by Russia of its Crimean Peninsula, declaring neutrality, demilitarizing, and the country undergoing "de-Nazification."

Putin has accused the Ukrainian government of being beholden to far-right, neo-Nazi elements -- despite President Volodymyr Zelenskiy being Jewish -- and has also cited alleged discrimination against Ukraine's Russian-speakers as one of his reasons for the conflict.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: UK sets out international ‘plan of action’ for crisis; Ukraine calls for more Nato help in meeting with US – live

Boris Johnson will seek to rally the international community to make a “renewed and concerted effort” to end Moscow’s devastating war, and launch a six-point plan of action that he will detail tomorrow (Sunday), the Agence France-Presse reported.

“In the days since Russia invaded Ukraine we have seen an unprecedented wave of international condemnation from across the globe,” Downing Street said.

“Nations across the globe have imposed the largest ever package of sanctions against a major economy.”

“Putin must fail and must be seen to fail in this act of aggression,” Johnson is to say.

Reuters adds:

Johnson also called for diplomatic paths for de-escalation with the full involvement of Ukraine’s government, stronger security in the European-Atlantic area, and an end to the “creeping normalisation” of Russian activities in Ukraine.

After meeting the prime ministers of Canada and the Netherlands on Monday, Johnson is due to host leaders from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia - countries experiencing an influx of refugees caused by the invasion - on Tuesday.

Britain is planning to move more quickly to sanction Russian businessmen through new legal measures which will be sent to parliament on Monday.

Live updates: Officials: Russian forces intensify shelling | AP News - 10 minutes ago

CHERNIHIV, Ukraine — Russia has dropped powerful bombs on residential areas of the city of Chernihiv, a regional official said Saturday.

Vyacheslav Chaus posted a photo of what he said was an undetonated FAB-500, a Soviet-designed 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) air-dropped bomb.

“Usually this weapon is used against military-industrial facilities and fortified structures,” said Chaus, head of the same-named region of Chernihiv. “But in Chernihiv, against residential areas.”

FAB-500 - Wikipedia
The FAB-500 is a Soviet-designed 500-kilogram (1,100 lb) general purpose air-dropped bomb with a high-explosive warhead, primarily used by the Russian Air Force, former Soviet republics and customer countries. The original M-54 model was rolled out in 1954, shaped for internal carriage by heavy bombers, a low-drag M-62 version in 1962 was intended for fighter bomber external hardpoint carriage.[2][3] The bomb is unguided, features a single nose fuse, and is compatible with most models of Soviet aircraft.[4] The FAB-500 was largely employed over Afghanistan by Soviet and allied Afghan forces during the 1980s and saw use during the Syrian civil war where it was carried by both Russian and Syrian warplanes.[5][6][7] The M62 variant of the FAB-500 is used by present-day Russian military forces and has seen use in the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.[8]

Ukraine-Russia Live: Putin Threatens to Strip Ukraine of Statehood - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

U.S. intelligence weighs Putin’s two years of extreme pandemic isolation as a factor in his wartime mind-set.

''The White House effort to design a strategy to confront Russia over its invasion of Ukraine is linked to an urgent re-examination by intelligence agencies of President Vladimir V. Putin’s mental state. The debate is over whether his ambitions and appetite for risk have been altered by two years of Covid isolation, or by a sense that this may be his best moment to rebuild Russia’s sphere of influence and secure his legacy. Or both.

Throughout the pandemic, Mr. Putin has retreated into an intricate cocoon of social distancing — though he allowed life in Russia to essentially return to normal. The Federal Protective Service, Russia’s answer to the Secret Service, built a virus-free bubble around Mr. Putin that far outstrips the protective measures taken by many of his foreign counterparts.''

10 days of suffering. Russia's war against Ukraine in photos (kyivindependent.com)

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he called “a special military operation” against Ukraine on Feb. 24, de facto declaring war on the country.

Putin claimed to have “no ill intentions towards neighboring countries” and denied firing missiles on the civil infrastructure during what he called a campaign to “disarm and de-Nazify” Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian troops shelled civilians in residential areas, burned houses, schools, and kindergartens all over Ukraine.

Ten days after Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine began, hundreds of Ukrainians are dead, thousands are injured, and over a million are displaced.

The Kyiv Independent publishes photographs of Ukrainian cities, destroyed by the Kremlin.

U.S. officials said Saturday that they are exploring a deal in which Poland would send Soviet-era aircraft to Ukraine in return for American F-16 jet fighters. The disclosure of a possible deal followed Mr. Zelensky’s impassioned plea via video to more than 200 members of Congress for assistance in obtaining more lethal military aid, especially Russian-made jet fighters that Ukrainian pilots can fly.

Ukraine’s General Staff said it was holding the line on most fronts and was beginning a counteroffensive, with Ukrainian forces releasing footage of a large column of abandoned Russian armor near Kharkiv. The governor of the southern Mykolaiv region, Vitaly Kim, said Ukrainian forces on Saturday pushed back Russian troops trying to enter the port city of Mykolaiv, seizing enemy armor. He called on local residents to feed stray Russian soldiers and then turn them over to police.

In a demonstration of its ability to counter Russia’s overwhelming advantage in aviation, Ukraine also shot down several Russian jet fighters, bombers and combat helicopters on Saturday, releasing footage of four captured pilots and crew and the remains of downed aircraft. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who met U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the Ukrainian-Polish border on Saturday, said three of these Russian aircraft were downed with U.S.-made Stinger missiles.

To make up for its military setbacks, Russia has increasingly resorted to indiscriminate bombing and shelling of civilian areas, particularly in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol, Ukrainian and Western officials said.

Russia’s army “has shown its true nature of a terrorist and coward, which is able to attack only the civilian population,” Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said.

In Ukraine, Belarusians are fighting for a free Belarus: 'After this we will liberate Minsk' | NOS
A group of masked men with Ukrainian and Belarusian flags looks straight into the camera. They have a message for soldiers from Belarus. "You should have deserted a long time ago, but it's not too late," it says. "Do the right thing and switch to our side!"

It is one of the Belarusian militias operating in Ukraine. They are fighting against the Russian troops because of the invasion of Ukraine, but are also fighting for the future of their own country. "Belarus is currently occupied by Russia. We must prevent our country from being completely annexed by Russia," write the leaders of 'The White Legion' on Telegram.

Internet backbone provider shuts off service in Russia

Cogent Communications, an internet backbone provider that routes data across intercontinental connections, has cut ties with Russian customers over its invasion of Ukraine. The US-based company is one of the world’s largest internet backbone providers and serves customers in 50 countries, including a number of high-profile Russian companies.

Unplugging Russia from Cogent’s global network will likely result in slower connectivity, but won’t completely disconnect Russians from the internet. Traffic from Cogent’s former customers will instead fall back on other backbone providers in the country, potentially resulting in network congestion. There isn’t any indication as to whether other internet backbone providers will also suspend services in Russia.

Why doesn't Ukraine attack the Russian convoy? And other questions - BBC News
''Everyone is baffled as to why Ukraine has not done more to attack the Russian convoy as it is a sitting duck for drone and airstrikes.

There are several possible explanations, Ukraine may be running out of armed drones and its small, outnumbered air force may be wary of being shot down by Russian air defence batteries.

Ben Barry from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) suggests the Ukrainians may well be safeguarding what resources they do have in readiness to counter-attack when the Russians get closer to Kyiv.''
