Ukraine live updates: US fears possible Russian concentration camps (usatoday.com)
"Russia continues the genocide of the Ukrainian people and civilians of Mariupol," the post said. "Every war criminal will answer for his crimes against humanity, against the people of Mariupol."

The council also claimed Russian soldiers have forced more than a thousand city residents to be relocated to Russia.

"The occupiers illegally took people out of the Levoberezhny district and a shelter in the building of a sports club where more than a thousand people (mostly women and children) were hiding from constant bombing," the council said.''

''Ukrainian passports were taken from people who were given a piece of paper that "has no legal weight and is not recognized throughout the civilized world," the city council said. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Sunday that she could not confirm those reports but expressed concern about the prospect of Russian-organized "concentration and prisoner camps."

U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," said it is "unconscionable for Russia to force Ukrainian citizens into Russia and put them in what will basically be concentration and prisoner camps."

Zelensky wants Israel to take a stronger stance against Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky addressed the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, in a video address. In it, he spoke out, among other things, about Israel's refusal to impose sanctions on Russia

The Ukrainian president also drew a comparison with the Second World War. According to him, the Kremlin is talking about a final solution for Ukraine in the same way that the Nazis talked about the "final solution" for the Jews in Germany.

"We can ask you why we are not getting weapons from you, why Israel has not imposed strong sanctions on Russia or pressured Russian companies," Zelensky said. "That choice is yours, but you have to live with the answer." According to him, Israel's air defense system is the best in the world and could protect Ukraine.

Until now, however, Israel has taken a mediating and neutral role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Netherlands houses tens of billions in assets of sanctioned Russians

  • More than 80 billion euros in assets are parked in the Netherlands that are related to Russian companies. This is reported by the Financieele Dagblad based on its own research. According to the newspaper, more than half of the assets can be linked to persons and organizations on the sanctions list of the European Union.

Among them are the CEO of the popular social network VK in Russia and the chairman of the oil company Rosneft. The latter is also called "the Russian Darth Vader" and "grey cardinal of the Kremlin", because of his position of power in Russia. The companies of the two have stored several billion in assets in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has frozen 200 million euros in Russian money so far, Klaas Knot, director of De Nederlandsche Bank, said in Nieuwsuur last week . That money only concerned bank balances. Experts tell the FD that they suspect that most of the money of Russian oligarchs in the Netherlands is in shares.

Most of the links with Russia here are through trust offices, which provide various financial services for companies, but are also often associated with letterbox companies. Trust offices have since been forced to stop providing financial services to Russian customers.

US not optimistic about Ukraine talks as Zelenskiy ups pressure on Biden | Ukraine | The Guardian
March 20 2022
''Joe Biden’s ambassador to the United Nations warned on Sunday there was little immediate hope of a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine, as pressure continued to build on the US president ahead of a crucial Nato summit in Europe this week.''

''Linda Thomas-Greenfield was reacting on CNN’s State of the Union to an interview with Volodymr Zelenskiy in which the Ukrainian president told the same network only talks would end the war and its devastating toll on civilians.

“We have to use any format, any chance, to have the possibility of negotiating, of talking to [Russian president Vladimir] Putin,” Zelenskiy told Fareed Zakaria, the host of GPS. “If these attempts fail, that would mean that this is a third world war.”

''Thomas-Greenfield said she saw little chance of a breakthrough.

“We have supported the negotiations that President Zelenskiy has attempted with the Russians, and I use the word attempted because the negotiations seem to be one-sided, and the Russians have not leaned in to any possibility for a negotiated and diplomatic solution,” she said.

“We tried before Russia decided to move forward in this brutal attack on Ukraine and those diplomatic efforts were not responded to well by the Russians, and they’re not responding now. But we’re still hopeful that the Ukrainian effort will end this brutal war.”

The Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Turkey is doing some real effort to try to facilitate, support talks between Russia and Ukraine. It’s far too early to say whether these talks can lead to any concrete outcome.”

“Lay down your arms,” Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, the director of the Russian National Center for Defense Management, said in a briefing distributed by the defence ministry.

“A terrible humanitarian catastrophe has developed,” Mizintsev said.

“All who lay down their arms are guaranteed safe passage out of Mariupol.”

“The Mariupol authorities now have the opportunity to make a choice and go over to the side of the people, otherwise the military tribunal that awaits them is just a little that they deserve for their terrible crimes, which the Russian side is very carefully documenting,” he said.

Greek diplomat compares Mariupol to Aleppo and Stalingrad

A Greek diplomat who was caught in the Russian bombardment of Mariupol says the besieged city's devastation is like that of Guernica, Stalingrad, Grozny and Aleppo.

Manolis Androulakis, Greece's Consul General in Mariupol, flew back to Athens on Tuesday after organising several successful evacuations of Greek nationals and ethnic Greeks.

He called on people to "unite their voices to ask for a truce, a ceasefire".

Androulakis has been hailed as a hero in Greece for staying in Mariupol during the bombardment. He said Mariupol will be remembered as a city "completely destroyed by the war".

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky describes the shelling of Mariupol as a war crime.

Androulakis said that "right now, civilians are hit blindly and helplessly" in the port city.

“In 24 hours, which made my efforts even harder, all the infrastructure was destroyed, everything was bombed, electricity, water, communications.”

Saudi Arabia’s state oil company [Aramco] said it would increase spending on oil production to meet rising global demand, as it reported a doubling of profits in 2021.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been asked in recent days by western governments to pump more oil to end their reliance on supplies from Russia.

The Gulf countries are the only two leading oil producers that have immediate spare capacity able to offset the shortfall in Russian-produced energy.
However, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a recent report that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are so far “showing no willingness to tap into reserves”.

Aramco is just the latest of the world’s big oil companies to post soaring profits.
