Is Russia Committing an Environmental War Crime in Donbas? - ICDS.
Eight years of hybrid war focused on Ukraine’s Donbas region have made it very difficult to understand the conditions in which that part of Ukraine have lived since its de facto removal from Ukrainian national jurisdiction in 2014.

The multi-pronged Russian invasion that began on 24 February 2022 will only further distract attention from a problem that has been growing since 2014: the deterioration of infrastructure and the risks it poses to environmental safety in this highly industrialised region. The unpalatable fact is that these risks have now become critical, with attendant dangers not only for local inhabitants but adjacent Ukrainian localities and districts. Even if, by some miracle, Russia withdraws its forces from Ukraine tomorrow, including the Donbas itself, these environmental dangers will demand urgent attention from central Ukrainian authorities and the international community.

Evidence now suggests that Russia, together with its proxies in Donetsk and Luhansk, might have committed an environmental war crime in 2018, with unfolding consequences. The root of the problem lies in the flooding of the region’s Soviet era coal mines, one of which was a site for a nuclear explosion in 1979 that has polluted the groundwater with radiation.

Ukrainian Woman's Report of Rape by Russian Soldiers Under Investigation (businessinsider.com)
  • ''A Ukrainian woman says Russian soldiers killed her husband and repeatedly assaulted her.
  • Her claims are said to be under investigation by Ukraine's prosecutor general.
  • "This younger guy pulled gun to my head and said: 'I shot your husband because he's a Nazi.'" she told The Times.''
Russian soldiers raping and sexually assaulting women, says Ukraine MP | Ukraine | The Guardian
''In a TV interview, Maria Mezentseva referenced one case in Brovary, an eastern suburb of Kyiv, where a woman was raped in front of her child.
On Wednesday, the prosecutor general, Iryna Venediktova, said the attack was being investigated by the authorities and Ukraine had told Russia that an arrest warrant had been issued for the serviceman.

Speaking on Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Mezentseva said: “There is one case which was very widely discussed recently because it’s been recorded and proceeded with [by] the prosecutor’s office, and we’re not going into details, but it’s quite a scary scene when a civilian was shot dead in his house in a small town next to Kyiv.''

Ukraine: Russian soldiers ‘have raped many more Ukrainian women’ | Metro News
''An MP in Ukraine has claimed women in besieged parts of her country have been ‘raped for hours and then murdered’ by Russian forces.
Maria Mezentseva, who represents the city of Kharkiv, insisted that the nation ‘will not be silent’ about the ‘horror’ being committed against women.''

‘Affected first and worst’: Ukrainian women and girls at increased risk of sexual violence (brusselstimes.com)
''The war in Ukraine is putting women and girls at increased risk of sexual violence, both in the country and when fleeing to find temporary shelter in other countries, according to the United Nations.

The current situation in Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia on 24 February, and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians as a result, puts all people in Ukraine at risk, but the threat is stronger for women and girls, according to Dagmar Schumacher, Director of the UN Women Brussels Office on the occasion of International Women’s Day.''

''Abusing support initiatives
Various initiatives have been set up in Belgium to help Ukrainian refugees who fled their country find shelter; however, one person in charge of such an initiative said he has received inappropriate messages from single men using the Facebook group he operates as if it were a dating site.

Andy de Schipper from Zelzate, who set up the Facebook group ‘Support Ukraine’ to share initiatives to help shelter refugees, told Radio 2 that various men were applying to take in Ukranian women, but only wanted to receive a “beautiful, intelligent and well-groomed” woman.''

US works to gauge peace prospects as it warns Putin 'misinformed' by advisers - CNNPolitics
[...]

... On Wednesday, the US revealed declassified intelligence showing Russian President Vladimir Putin has been misinformed by his advisers about the Russian military's performance in Ukraine.

"One of the Achilles' heels of autocracies is that you don't have people in those systems who speak truth to power or who have the ability to speak truth to power. And I think that is something that we're seeing in Russia," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a visit to Morocco.

[...]

"We believe that Putin is being misinformed by his advisers about how badly the Russian military is performing and how the Russian economy is being crippled by sanctions because his senior advisers are too afraid to tell him the truth," White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said during a daily briefing.

The US also has information indicating that Putin has become aware of the misinformation, leading to a rift between the Russian leaders and his top defense officials.

Bedingfield said there was now a "persistent tension" between Putin and members of his military leadership.

"It is increasingly clear that Putin's war has been a strategic blunder that has left Russia weaker over the long term and increasingly isolated on the world stage," she said.

This intelligence may help explain why Putin rejected a slew of diplomatic off-ramps the US and other countries offered Putin in the run-up to his invasion of Ukraine, believing that the Russian military would be able to quickly overwhelm Ukraine.

The official declined to provide additional examples of Putin being misinformed by his advisers, saying that information remains classified. The US intelligence community declassified and downgraded the summary of its findings but not specific intelligence to protect sources and methods.

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Putin demands Mariupol surrender; US promises financial support for Ukraine – live | World news | The Guardian
''Russian hackers attempted to penetrate the network of Nato and militaries in some eastern European countries, reports Reuters.

Russian hackers have recently attempted to penetrate the networks of NATO and the militaries of some eastern European countries, Google’s Threat Analysis Group said in a report published on Wednesday.

The report did not say which militaries had been targeted in what Google described as “credential phishing campaigns” launched by a Russian-based group called Coldriver, or Callisto. “These campaigns were sent using newly created Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, so the success rate of these campaigns is unknown,” the report said.

NATO was not immediately available for comment on the report.
Russia, which is now under heavy Western economic sanctions following its decision to invade Ukraine on Feb. 24, regularly denies accusations of mounting cyber attacks on Western targets.''

Blinken says Russian invasion of Ukraine having 'deadly' impact on Arab world | The Times of Israel
''ALGIERS, Algeria — Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having a “deadly” impact in the Arab world, particularly through spiraling wheat prices, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says in Algiers.

He is speaking on the final leg of a trip that began with an unprecedented Israeli-Arab summit in the Negev desert, attended by Blinken and the foreign ministers of Israel, Egypt and three Arab countries that normalized ties with the Jewish state in 2020.

Import-dependent North African countries face what Blinken describes as a “disaster” as the war in Ukraine sends shockwaves through global wheat and fuel markets. Both Russia and Ukraine are major wheat producers, while Moscow is a major global supplier of oil and gas.''

Chernobyl employees say Russian soldiers had no idea what the plant was and call their behavior ‘suicidal’
Russian armored vehicles without radiation protection were seen driving through an area called the “Red Forest,” an area of woods four square miles in size surrounding the power plant. The area absorbed so much radiation from the Chernobyl explosion that its trees turned a gingery brown color, giving the forest its nickname. It is considered one of the world’s most radioactive places.

The employees said that the military vehicles kicked up a “big column of dust,” which may be what sent radiation levels soaring in the area following the invasion. The workers believed that breathing in that much radioactive dust could cause radiation poisoning, which can quickly turn lethal.

Everything we know about the alleged poisoning on March 3 According to Bellingcat, the BBC, and the Wall Street Journal, Roman Abramovich and two other negotiators suffered symptoms that point to chemical attacks. — Meduza

“According to Bellingcat, experts concluded that the symptoms were likely the result of poisoning by chemical weapons, though the exact type of chemical is unknown. Another possibility, though less likely, is microwave irradiation. Bellingcat reported that none of the men had consumed anything except water and chocolate before the onset of symptoms.”

“If this was indeed a chemical weapons attack, the person responsible most likely wanted to scare the men without causing lasting damage, an expert told Bellingcat, citing the symptoms and the types of toxin likely to cause them. The symptoms suggest poisoning by A class of organic compounds that includes, among other things, heme, chlorophyll, and many other naturally-occurring molecules. It’s unclear exactly what toxic compounds of the porphyrin class might be pertinent to this case.”
