Zelenskyy advisor says the war could be nearing an end

Ukraine presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said during a briefing on Sunday that the next "week or two" could determine the outcome of the Russia-Ukraine War, according to a report.

After Russia's military troops invaded Ukraine nearly 40 days ago, the larger army's might has been repeatedly stalled by Ukraine's military determination and will to save their homeland, resulting in a slowed attack and severe losses for Russia.

Russia's lack of swift victory has brought both countries to the negotiation table, but fighting — including a critical struggle for Mariupol — continues.

Should the city hold strong, or potentially fall, the outcome of the war could quickly follow, Arestovych said, as Ukrinform reported.

"They understand this," the advisor said, speaking of both countries, per the report. "On the one hand, it gives us hope in the area of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy region, Kharkiv region that we will get rid of the enemy there, we will repel it from there. Secondly, it means a possible, potential deterioration or a sharp deterioration of the situation around Mariupol and in the JFO area."

"But, the next week or two will be uneven. There will be reports that we are winning, counterattacking and repelling in some areas. We are liberating our lands from the enemy," he added via Ukrinform. "However, there will also be information that in some parts of the front, particularly in the east, the situation is complicated. You need to be emotionally, organizationally and consciously ready for this."

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has been speaking on the US political talkshow Face the Nation, accusing Russia of trying to wipe out Ukraine and its people, and calling for the Russian president Vladimir Putin and his military commanders to be held accountable for atrocities allegedly committed by withdrawing Russian troops.

[...]

When we find people with hands tied behind their back and decapitated, such things I don’t understand. I don’t comprehend the kids who were killed and tortured. It wasn’t enough just to kill, for those criminals? Maybe they wanted to take gold, or washing machines as they were killing, but they were also torturing them as they did this.”

About holding the perpetrators accountable for war crimes, Zelenskiy added: “It wouldn’t be fair to take only [Putin]. All the military commanders, everyone who gave instructions and orders should be punished adequately.

Ukraine documents alleged atrocities by retreating Russians - CBS News
''Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said scores of killed civilians were found on the streets of Bucha and the Kyiv suburbs of Irpin and Hostomel in what looked like a "scene from a horror movie."

Arestovych said some people were shot in the head and had their hands bound, and some bodies showed signs of torture, rape and burning.''

''The capital city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said civilians were "shot with joined hands" and told German newspaper Bild that "what happened in Bucha and other suburbs of Kyiv can only be described as genocide."

A day earlier, AP journalists witnessed Ukrainian soldiers gingerly removing at least six bodies from a street in Bucha with cables in case the Russians had booby-trapped corpses with explosives before their withdrawal. Local residents said the dead people were civilians killed without provocation, a claim that could not be independently verified.

Klitschko called on other nations to immediately end Russian gas imports, saying they were funding the invasion of Ukraine, now in its 39th day.''

Russian Torture Chamber Discovered in Liberated Ukraine Town as the Russian Army Continues to Do What It Is Good at Doing – RedState
Her neighbours in a neat brick house four doors down had been tied hand and foot and killed. Down the road, territorial defence fighters said they had found a basement where 18 bodies, men, women and children as young as 14 lay dead, their bodies mutilated.

Two days earlier, Torovik said, he had seen a dog eating a woman’s body that had been left on the ground. Yet the worst was in the basement of the dacha.
“We found 18 bodies in there,” he said. “They had been torturing people. Some of them had their ears cut off. Others had teeth pulled out. There were kids like 14, 16 years old, some adults. They just took the bodies away yesterday.”

Hundreds 'killed, tortured, executed' Zelenskiy says
[...]

In a late-night address, the Ukrainian leader said:

"Hundreds of people were killed. Tortured, executed civilians. Corpses on the streets ...

Concentrated evil has come to our land. Murderers. Torturers. Rapists. Looters. Who call themselves the army. And who deserve only death after what they did.”

[...]

"I want every mother of every Russian soldier to see the bodies of the killed people in Bucha, in Irpin, in Hostomel. What did they do? Why were they killed? What did the man who was riding his bicycle down the street do?

Why were ordinary civilians in an ordinary peaceful city tortured to death? Why were women strangled after their earrings were ripped out of their ears? How could women be raped and killed in front of children?

How could their corpses be desecrated even after death? Why did they crush the bodies of people with tanks? What did the Ukrainian city of Bucha do to your Russia? How did all this become possible?

Russian mothers! Even if you raised looters, how did they also become butchers? ... They killed deliberately and with pleasure.”

Zelenskiy also placed the blame on Russian officials.

"I want all the leaders of the Russian Federation to see how their orders are being fulfilled. Such orders. Such a fulfilment. And joint responsibility. For these murders, for these tortures, for these arms torn off by explosions that lie on the streets. For shots in the back of the head of tied people.”

“This is how the Russian state will now be perceived. This is your image,” he added.

“Your culture and human appearance perished together with the Ukrainian men and women to whom you came.”

  • Russia's defence ministry has denied accusations of Russian troops killing civilians in suburban town of Bucha
[...]

Ukrainian prosecutors said they had found 410 bodies in towns near the capital Kyiv. They said some witnesses were too traumatised to speak.

Two mass graves were discovered in Bucha, one of more than 30 towns and suburbs liberated in recent days.

Bodies of civilians, their hands bound and bullet wounds in the back of their heads, littered the streets of the small commuter town north of Kyiv.

Survivors emerging from basements after weeks underground told of summary executions, sexual violence and terror not seen since Joseph Stalin's Soviet rule of terror in the 1930s.

[...]

The chilling discoveries came as:
  • Russia shaved the heads of female prisoners of war in chilling echoes of the Nazis' treatment of women in concentration camps;
  • The Russian defence ministry shamelessly suggested photos of civilians their troops had slaughtered were 'fake' and part of a 'planned media campaign';
  • More war crimes were reported across the country, including the rape of minors and use of children as human shields;
  • Fears grew for 11 community leaders kidnapped by retreating Russians after one of them was reportedly 'killed in captivity', and;
  • Human Rights Watch recorded a list of war crimes including repeated rape, summary executions and serious violence against Ukrainian civilians.
[...]

Fears of a genocidal plot grew as it was claimed Russia adopted a 'state technical standard for digging and maintaining mass graves' weeks before the invasion.

Troops were taught how to build the huge burial grounds for 1,000 corpses in just three days in a policy that came into effect on February 1 – three weeks before they marched on Ukraine.

Observers fear it could suggest Putin had 'planned genocide' in Ukraine on a scale 'unseen since World War Two'.
