Reports pouring in of rape by Russian soldiers in Ukraine | The Star
''Reports of Ukrainian women and girls being raped by Russian soldiers are increasingly emerging from the war zone.

The scope of the violence remains difficult to ascertain amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, but a Ukrainian media personality is encouraging women to come forward with their stories, as officials work to confirm what is happening.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) confirmed Sunday a case of repeated rape of a woman by a Russian soldier on March 13 at a school in the Kharkiv region, where she and her family had been sheltering. “She said that he beat her and cut her face, neck and hair with a knife,” HRW reported.''

''In her Instagram appeal, Efrosinina explains to rape victims that they must come forward to authorities in order for the crimes to be prosecuted''
“I know that you have lost your loved ones, men, parents. I know that all you want now is to die. I beg you, I beg you, let us punish these scum … You need to report what has been done. It is very difficult, but it must be done.”

''More recently the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported rape by Russian forces against detainees in eastern Ukraine. The 2014 UNHCR report counts 340 victims of sexual violence, including “rape, forced nudity and violence to the genitals.” The report notes that “the number of individuals brought to responsibility for these violations are small.”

U.S. can do more to help Ukraine, rattle Putin, former Moscow CIA chief says

In a conversation with The Washington Times, Mr. Hoffman implored the Biden administration to send Ukrainians more missiles, drones, fighter jets and other equipment in their fight against Russian forces. Such support, he said, is crucial because the longer Ukraine is able to fend off the Russians, the greater the chances that Mr. Putin‘s support in Moscow could crumble, potentially leading to the end of his two-decade reign.

Refuting Moscow’s claim, satellite images show bodies were in Bucha for weeks

Satellite photographs released on Monday appear to rebut Russian assertions that dead bodies in civilian clothing found in Bucha had appeared there after Russian forces retreated from the devastated Ukrainian town.

Mid-March satellite imagery of a Bucha street appears to show several bodies of civilians lying dead in or just off the roadway where Ukrainian officials recently said they found multiple corpses after Russian troops withdrew.

“High-resolution Maxar satellite imagery collected over Bucha, Ukraine (northwest of Kyiv) verifies and corroborates recent social media videos and photos that reveal bodies lying in the streets and left out in the open for weeks,” Maxar Technologies spokesman Stephen Wood said Monday in a statement.

The New York Times published an analysis of close-ups of Bucha’s Yablonska street, and concluded — after comparing it with video footage from April 1 and 2 of dead bodies along the street — that many had been there since at least three weeks ago, when Russian forces were in control of the town.

AFP photographers entered Bucha, northwest of Kyiv, on Saturday and directly confirmed the presence of some 20 bodies — all in civilian clothing, some with their hands bound — in scenes that have sparked global revulsion, and accusations of war crimes.

Zelenskyy criticizes United Nations for inaction, details atrocities in Ukraine (nbcnews.com)
[...]

"They shot and killed women outside their houses," Zelenskyy said. "They killed entire families, adults and children, and they tried to burn the bodies."

The Ukrainian leader said civilians were fatally shot in the back of the heads after being tortured. Some were shot in the streets and thrown into wells and others were killed in their own apartments by grenades, he said.

“The civilians were crushed by tanks while sitting in their cars in the middle of the road,” he continued. “They cut off limbs, cut their throats, slashed their throats. Women were raped and killed in front of their children. Their tongues were pulled out only because the aggressor did not hear what they wanted to hear from them.”

[...]

Zelenskyy suggested that the Security Council cannot work effectively when Russia is one of its permanent members. “The world has yet to see what they have done in other occupied cities and regions of our country,” he said.

[...]

Russian soldiers are deliberately blocking cities, creating mass starvation, Zelenskyy said. He said they also shoot columns of civilians on the road who are trying to escape and blow up shelters where innocent people hide from airstrikes. Zelenskyy also said the Russian military had abducted more than 2,000 children and has been looting cities and villages it has captured.

[...]

He said the Security Council can remove Russia from its body so that “it cannot block decisions about its own aggression, its own war and then do everything that we can do to establish peace.” Or, he said, the U.N. can reform itself or dissolve itself altogether.

Russia-Ukraine war: In Chinese media, the US is the villain | Russia-Ukraine war News | Al Jazeera
By Rachel Cheung
6 Apr 2022
''Hong Kong, China – China may portray itself as a neutral party in the war in Ukraine, but the message it communicates to its audience at home tells a different story.

State news agency Xinhua calls the war “a special military operation” and “the Russia-Ukraine crisis” but never refers to it as an invasion. CCTV, the state broadcaster, mentioned civilian casualties for the first time only three weeks after Russia invaded. More recently, state outlets doubled down on the Russian conspiracy theory claiming the US is funding the development of biological weapons in Ukraine, including migratory birds that could spread avian viruses in Russia.''

''Another overarching theme of Chinese state media coverage is the depiction of the US as the instigator of the conflict, which is part of a broader narrative peddled by Chinese diplomats and the government propaganda machine, according to analysts.

“This is one of the most consistent frames we have seen throughout. And the Chinese central leadership have really shown that they’re dedicated to the disinformation campaign,” said Bandurski. “It’s a proxy information war that China is waging here. In the long term, it’s about undermining the credibility of the US and the US-led international system.''

Ukraine leader to UN Security Council: No more Russia veto | AP News
Zelenskyy was sharply critical of the failure of the Security Council to take any action to end Russia’s aggression.

He said the council can do two things: “Either remove Russia as an aggressor and a source of war so it cannot block decisions about its own aggression, its own war, and then do everything that we can do to establish peace. Or the other option is, please show how we can reform or change, dissolve yourself and work for peace.”

Ukraine leader to UN Security Council: No more Russia veto | AP News
BUCHA, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused the Russians of gruesome atrocities in Ukraine and told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that those responsible should immediately be brought up on war crimes charges in front of a tribunal like the one established at Nuremberg after World War II.

Longtime Putin Adviser Says Russian Leader Is Obsessed With Ukraine And Has 'Stepped Into A Trap' (rferl.org)
In an interview with RFE/RL's Georgian Service, Gleb Pavlovsky said Putin's decision to invade Ukraine on February 24 made "no political sense."

"This is all Putin's own personal decision. Nobody other than Putin would have made it, not even Ramzan Kadyrov, had he had a say in it," Pavlovsky said, referring to the authoritarian ruler of the Russian republic of Chechnya. "Nobody, including myself, realized just how maniacally obsessed he must have been with Ukraine. We underestimated the extent of decay of the Russian government."

U.S. Approves Sale Of Fighter Jets To Bulgaria Amid Speculation About Supply Of MiGs To Ukraine (rferl.org)
U.S. officials said the $1.673 billion agreement was not directly related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which comes amid continuing speculation that a NATO ally could provide Ukraine with Russian-made MiG-29 aircraft to fight Russian forces and that such a move would involve the United States "backfilling" that ally's fleet of jets with U.S. aircraft in exchange.

Bulgaria is one of the three NATO members that have MIG-29s, which Ukrainian pilots are capable of flying. The others are Poland and Slovakia.
