Russia-Ukraine War Latest News: Live Updates (wsj.com)
''Ukraine:
Russian forces advanced on a contested steelworks complex in Mariupol. Buses meant to deliver humanitarian aid and evacuate civilians were blocked by Russian soldiers, Ukraine said. Russia shelled civilian targets in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, a hub for refugees who fled Mariupol, Ukraine said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said authorities were collecting more witness testimony about the alleged war crimes for which Russia denies responsibility. He issued a video plea for more weapons to arm Ukrainian forces, who have benefited from NATO training in recent years.'

The big role that small countries are playing in supplying Ukraine - The Washington Post
''Russia is a giant of a country in scale, population and ambition. Yet some of the most notable military support for Ukraine after the Kremlin’s invasion is coming from countries far, far smaller.

Consider Estonia, which has donated anti-armor weapons like FGM-148 javelins and artillery like D-30 122mm howitzers to Ukraine. There’s also its fellow Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania, which have donated Stinger launchers and thermal imaging devices, according to tracking from Jane’s, the open-source defense intelligence provider.
.
The Czech Republic has reportedly sent vehicles like Russian-made T-72M tanks and BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles. Central European neighbor Slovakia announced Monday that it was in talks with allies about how to provide its own fleet of Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighter aircraft to Ukraine forces, building on a prior transfer of a Russian-made S-300 air defense system.

Even smaller countries have done their part: The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg pledged NLAW antitank weapons and jeeps. But mostly, this is the work of countries farther east, former members of the Soviet Union or Warsaw Pact.''

Canada and allies on high alert for Russian disinformation and interference: minister | CBC News
''The Communications Security Establishment said the Kremlin is using platforms featuring antisemitic, anti-LGBTQ, anti immigrant and anti-globalist material to manipulate global audiences.

The surveillance agency, which monitors and decodes signals intelligence including online activity, disclosed that Russia is spreading falsehoods about Canada's involvement in the Ukraine conflict using media it controls.

The Kremlin's false narratives include doctored images of members of the Canadian Armed Forces in Ukraine and false claims that Canadian soldiers are committing war crimes.''

''His remarks come after the government earmarked $28 million in the budget to combat disinformation within Canada and by foreign actors such as Russia, China and Iran.

"Russia is a well-known belligerent and hostile actor in this space. And so too are other state actors and that is why we remain on high alert," he said.

Mendicino said calling out lies — including Putin's assertion that the invasion of Ukraine was designed to de-Nazify the country — is a crucial first step to undermining the impact of disinformation.

He added Canada is working "very closely" with G7 partners and the "Five Eyes" — an intelligence alliance between Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and the United States — to fight disinformation, which he said was being used to undermine democracies around the world.''

Russia warns Finland against NATO membership, moves military equipment toward Finnish border

"In response to Marin's statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would "not improve" the security situation in Europe, and Russian lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean "the destruction of the country".

"We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent," Peskov said."

Finnish NATO decision coming in 'weeks,' with Swedish choice not far behind - Breaking Defense

"In a joint press conference today, Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin and Swedish prime minister Magdalena Andersson openly discussed the potential for joining the alliance, something that seemed almost impossible just six months ago — before Russia’s Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of non-NATO member Ukraine."

How can Putin and his fellow mouthpieces think that their actions... Ukraine invasion and abuction/torture/rape/slaughter of men, women and children and then saying words about Finland joining NATO..." it would mean "the destruction of the country"...would lead to anything less than Finland and Sweden wanting to not be put in the same situation as Ukraine.

Russian mouthpieces of Putin say things like Finland joining would be them joining an "alliance [NATO] [that] remains a tool geared towards confrontation"!???

Russian mouthpieces of Putin say the most ridiculous things that are arse-backwards AND they expect the world watching the carnage they've created to swallow it all?

Russia’s largest warship explodes after missile attack

"Ammunition onboard the Moskva exploded after a fire, according to Moscow's defence ministry. It said the original cause of the damage was not known."

By Thursday afternoon the defence ministry said a fire onboard had been contained and that it would be towing the warship back to port, adding that it was still afloat.

Moscow blamed the blast on an unexplained fire, making no mention of any missile strike

"In a Facebook post, Ukrainian officials said Russian rescue efforts had been hampered by ammunition exploding on board and bad weather."

''April 14, 2022 5:39AM EDT
Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are set to depart from an Ontario military base today to help with the care, co-ordination and resettlement of Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Defence Minister Anita Anand is expected to announce and oversee the deployment from Canadian Forces Base Trenton this morning after a reconnaissance team visited Poland last week to plan for the mission.

A government source speaking on condition of anonymity said the troops will help with the care and co-ordination of Ukrainian refugees, more than 2.6 million of which have fled to Poland since Russia invaded in February.

They will also help Ukrainians leave Poland for other destinations.

Canada has prioritized immigration applications from Ukraine and created a special program that lets Ukrainian citizens and their families come to Canada and work or study for three years.''

Russian ship that drew defiant expletive from Ukrainian guards catches fire, explodes | Stars and Stripes

''The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet suffered a catastrophic fire and explosion that Ukraine said Thursday was the result of a missile attack.

A fire and subsequent munitions blast seriously damaged the guided-missile cruiser Moskva, causing the crew to evacuate, the Russian Defense Ministry said, as cited by Russian news agency RIA.

Maksym Marchenko, governor of the Odesa region of Ukraine, said that two Ukrainian missiles caused the fire and explosion late Wednesday.''

''The cruiser’s missiles were not damaged by the fire and experts were working on towing the ship to port to investigate the cause, Russian officials told RIA.

Loss of the ship is a serious blow to the Russian navy’s prestige and national pride. It also comes as the navy is reportedly preparing to support ground forces for a new offensive in eastern Ukraine.''

83 Russians applied for asylum here <The Netherlands> in March • 'Ukraine shells village across the border

83 Russians applied for asylum in March, much more than usual
In March, 83 Russians applied for asylum in the Netherlands for the first time, which is a record: an average of less than 20 applications from Russia per month, reports the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).

The IND does not register motives and therefore does not have exact figures about the background of Russian asylum applications. Experience shows that asylum seekers from Russia who have recently arrived have fled for various reasons. "There are people who have criticized the current government, conscientious objectors, human rights activists, journalists, LGBTI people and Jehovah's Witnesses," a spokesperson told NOS.

Well-founded fear of persecution can be a reason to grant an asylum application. The IND and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice & Security closely monitor developments in Russia. They also see more Russians arriving at the Refugee Aid organization at Schiphol and in Ter Apel, where asylum seekers have to report when they arrive in the Netherlands.

'Attack or not, military role of flagship Moskva is over for the time being'
However the fire on the Moskva in the Black Sea started, the Russian warship was badly damaged and that is a huge blow to the Russian army, experts say. "It is a considerable loss for the fleet," said Peter Wijninga, former Air Force officer and now military expert at The Hague Center for Strategic Studies.

"The military role of the Moskva is finished for now. If it is in port, it is of no military significance. It will take a long time to repair. And apparently it can no longer move itself, because it has to be towed." In any case, the Moskva can no longer contribute to blocking the port city of Odessa, or come under fire.

EU ends last arms exports to Russia
Despite the war in Ukraine, EU countries exported millions of euros worth of weapons to Russia until last week. But the loophole that made that possible has now been closed, writes Reuters news agency on the authority of EU diplomats.

The fifth sanctions package adopted last week would make it impossible to sell weapons to Russia. Last year, EU countries earned about 39 million euros from this trade. Countries such as France and Germany were the largest exporters.

Since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, exporting arms to Russia has been officially banned for EU member states. But due to a clause in this sanction package, it was still possible in practice, until last week.

Dutch Patriots on their way to Slovakia
At the moment 150 Dutch soldiers with Patriot anti-aircraft systems are on their way to Slovakia from the Limburg Lieutenant General Best barracks. They are stationed there together with German troops to "protect the NATO treaty area and the population against possible incoming missiles", the defense said.

Slovakia in turn sends S-300 anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine. And they are very similar in function to the Patriot systems. This suggests a simple one-two punch, in which the Netherlands supplies Patriots to Slovakia, in exchange for which Slovakia transfers air missiles to Ukraine. But where the American government does openly do so, according to the Netherlands, this is not the case in this case.

Senior U.S. defense official unable to verify what caused explosion on Russian cruiser

A senior U.S. defense official was unable to verify what caused an explosion to occur on a Russian warship in the Black Sea Thursday.

The official noted the cruise vessel, roughly 60 miles south of Odesa, could have been hit from a missile but also said ships carry many combustible materials.

"We just don’t know," the senior defense official told reporters.

''Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu reportedly has suffered a massive heart attack which is thought to be not from natural causes, a Russian-Israeli businessman has claimed. This comes as Shoigu has lately been missing from regular Kremlin briefings on the Ukraine-Russia war, raising questions on his well-being.

Shoigu, who was one of the most trusted of Vladimir Putin's men, was a mainstay in the early weeks of the war but went missing a few weeks back. At that time also speculation was rife that he had suffered a heart attack. However, he was seen after a few days but many raised doubts that it was an old video of Shoigu''

"Seagal, a one-time Hollywood action star who has become a punchline in recent years, was caught on camera giving a loving speech to Vladimir Putin during the Russian president’s 70th birthday celebrations Sunday in Moscow, according to the Daily Mail.

Video recorded at Putin’s lavish bash, which drew many of the country’s elites who have been targeted by Western sanctions over the Russian invasion of Ukraine, showed Seagal, wearing his customary black shirt and yellow glasses, gushing over his friendship with Mad Vlad and his cronies and his love for Russia.''

''Seagal once described Putin as “one of the greatest world leaders, if not the greatest world leader, alive today” and told Fox News Digital in February that an “outside entity” was causing the friction between Russia and Ukraine.''
