Ukraine maps: Tracking Russia's invasion

Troops are advancing from the north; from the east through Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Sumy; and from Crimea in the south.

Dozens of targets have been struck, as Russian troops have poured into Ukraine.

(...)

Reports suggest that the main Russian advances towards Kyiv are from Ivankiv to the north west and Chernihiv to the north east.

Ukraine's capital has come under further missile attack as Russian troops approach.

Gunfire has been heard in the central government area of the city centre near the presidential office.

The Ukrainian army says it has blown up a bridge over the Teteriv river at Ivankiv, 50 miles (80km) to the north of the city, to slow the Russian advance.

(...)

Russia is now in full control of significant parts of Ukraine's territory.

After Ukraine's air defences and other military infrastructure came under attack on Thursday, columns of tanks have moved rapidly into position, backed up by artillery and air power.

Among the initial targets were Kyiv, Karkhiv, Odesa and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Troops are now spreading out in parts of the north, east and south, with missile strikes and artillery clearing the way for advancing Russian forces.

Russian soldiers dressed in Ukraine military uniforms move into Kyiv

Ukraine accuses Russian soldiers of stealing uniforms and vehicles to enter Kyiv

Ukrainian officials accused Russian soldiers of stealing Ukrainian uniforms and vehicles early Friday and using them to lead a convoy towards the capital, Kyiv.

In a Facebook post made around 9 a.m. local time, Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar claimed that Russian forces "seized two Ukrainian army vehicles and changed into Ukrainian uniforms."

At the time, they were "moving at speed to the center of Kiev" from the side of Oblon, a district to the north of the city.

"They are followed by a column of Russian military trucks," she added. "They will surely be destroyed."

(...)

Malyar's claim was repeated on Facebook by the Ukrainian State Service for the Special Communications and Information Protection. It accused Russia of "cunningly trying to break into Kyiv."

The vehicles stolen were two armored personnel carriers and three military trucks, the service said.

(...)

According to Kyiv Independent reporter Anastasiia Lapatina, the Russian soldiers were "neutralized." She did not provide a source.

(...)

International opinion is divided on whether disguising oneself as the enemy constitutes a war crime.

Have we heard Belarus’s thoughts on all this? They are very much in Russia’s pocket, are not in NATO, and border both countries. They are also very close to Chernobyl, like 15-20 miles, so must be concerned about that.

I don't know how the Belarusian people feel but the state is very much aiding and abetting Putin...

The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Belarusian regime’ defense sector and financial institutions Thursday following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, citing Minsk’s “support for, and facilitation of” Moscow’s attack.

(...)

As tensions between Moscow and Kyiv escalated last week, some 30,000 Russian troops extended their stay in Belarus. For months, the U.S. has been warning that Russia is creating pretexts to swoop on Kyiv, and flagged that the recent war games and this extension in Belarus was a prelude to the attack on Ukraine, which was ultimately launched Thursday.

Lukashenko has denied the involvement of Belarusian troops in Moscow’s attack, although he said he was willing to support Russian forces if necessary, state media reported. But with reports of Russian troops entering Ukraine from its northern border, the Belarusian regime’s role in the emerging conflict in Europe has come under increased scrutiny.

“I think the most alarming thing we now understand is that we’re not quite sure whether Belarus could be considered as a sovereign state in terms of control on its own territory, especially in terms of military control,” says Olga Dryndova, editor of Belarus-Analysen at the University of Bremen’s Research Center for East European Studies in Germany.

I don't think the US is the only one. We have been having increased petrol prices all year, and probably the year before and more. This week they had a big increase. Probably happening in lots of countries. Oil magnates, and now the attack on Ukraine and those fuel implications.

Yes. I put petrol in my car on Wednesday and it was £1.45 a litre.

One litre is .26 gallon, so that’s like 1 forth a (1/4) gallon here, Maryland. Day before I paid $3.60 gallon, that would be about a dollar 40 cent cheaper here.

I wonder if Russia had made private deals with China for the gas/oil and investments (I am guessing they did) prior to or during this attack on Ukraine. Because the talking heads were not expecting China to support Russia.

''As world leaders announce economic sanctions to punish Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there are questions about how effective these measures will actually be.
According to some experts, Russia has spent years isolating itself and preparing for this.
Calling it the “Fortress Russia” strategy, Robert Austin with the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto says the Kremlin has built up huge cash reserves and Europe is still heavily reliant on Russian gas, so the West doesn’t have a lot of leverage.''

“Moreover, the president of Russia is acting like a madman and his threats don’t strike me as idle anymore. He has reached a turning point that so few people predicted in terms of what he’s been willing to do. And he’s basically wiping a country off a map, so we have to do whatever we can,” he told CityNews.''

“I think Russia has been planning this for a long time, a lot longer than when we saw a bunch of troops and more than 100,000 head to the borders,” Austin added, noting, “Russia’s prepared to sit it out longer, and that’s the worrying trend.”

Austin, who is the associate director of the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at UofT, says the end goal must be a sanctions regime so punishing that Russia becomes an isolated pariah state like Iran or even North Korea.
“Because a pariah state is what it is,” he said.''

“The people of Ontario will always stand against tyranny and oppression,” Bethlenfalvy said. “To that end, I am directing the LCBO to withdraw all products produced in Russia from store shelves.

“The people of Ontario will always stand against tyranny and oppression.”

The LCBO released a statement saying it supported the decision and would be removing the products “effective immediately.”

“Following government directive, effective immediately, all products produced in Russia will be removed from LCBO sales channels, including 679 LCBO stores across the province, lcbo.com and LCBO Convenience Outlets,” the LCBO said.''

NATO sending part of response force to shore up European allies threatened by invasion of Ukraine

Murray Brewster · CBC News · Posted: Feb 25, 2022 2:17 PM ET | Last Updated: 38 minutes ago

[...]

Stoltenberg would not say how much of the NATO Response Force would be sent.

"We are now making significant additional defensive deployments of forces to the eastern part of the alliance," he said.

"We will make all deployments necessary to ensure strong and credible deterrence and defence across the alliance, now and in the future. Our measures are and remain preventive, proportionate and non-escalatory."

Canada has earmarked up to 3,400 Canadian Armed Forces personnel — land, sea and air — to join NATO's main response force.
