'Most likely others involved', police say

Crime Command detective acting superintendent Mark Hatt said police suspected "more parties" were involved.

"We are keeping an open mind, but believe the most likely scenario is that her disappearance involves one or more parties," he said.

"Given the extensive and detailed search that has already been undertaken and the fact no sign of Samantha or her personal belongings has been located, we have ruled out any type of medical incident.

"There is also nothing to indicate that Samantha left the area of her own accord.

"I know that a lot of people, particularly those who live in the local Ballarat community, are extremely concerned about the fact we haven't yet located Samantha or who may be responsible for her disappearance.

"I want to reassure those members of the public that Victoria Police is doing everything we can to find out what has happened and provide some answers to Samantha's family and the broader community."

Other than the headline, two points BBM.

"They continue to ask everyone in the Ballarat East and Mount Helen areas, particularly around the Canadian Forest, to check their CCTV for any possible sightings over the past three weeks."

Does this mean that they think that Samantha could have been alive for this time and held at an address? Or active around the Mt Clear area? Interesting that they want CCTV from the last three weeks from these areas (in addition to the initial plea for CCTV from February 4th).....

Google maps had it as 10 km from CBD. Is this anywhere near the Golf Course?

It's hard to believe the Apple items aren't locatable.
I followed another case that helped me understand how this works-basically your device must have connected via bluetooth with someone else's apple device, that is connected to wifi or cell.

So, as your apple moves around, it briefly connects with the known location of other devices, creating a map of where it went.

However, if there aren't apple devices close by, or your bluetooth is off, it won't map your location.

"When your lost device is offline but close to another device, it's able to connect to that other device over Bluetooth and relay its location....Turning off Bluetooth or power makes your device untrackable, but if it's on, has Bluetooth, and is near another Apple device, it can be tracked"

There is a newer iphone that is supposed to be able to connect with satellites, but reviews are mixed. It requires the user to deliberately try to share their location, pointing at the sky, etc.

In the case I followed, the 'find my apple' trail only showed up in a little town they'd passed through (where there were some people with apple devices). However that did, eventually, lead searchers to go look in a very unlikely, hard to access area, after ruling out the normal places they'd expect to find them and, lo and behold, that's where they were.

Mount Clear is roughly 1/3 to halfway between Eureka St and the Buninyong golf course, depending where in Mount Clear you're looking.

Phone data has prompted the Missing Persons Squad to target the Mount Clear area south of Ballarat in the search for missing woman Samantha Murphy.

Mount Clear is adjacent to the Canadian State Forest, an area Murphy was known to frequent on her runs.

Police say the extensive search will focus on an area “highlighted by intelligence derived from phone data”.

Early in the investigation police confirmed Murphy’s phone had also pinged 11km away from her home.
