Just media vultures!
Well, we did have one species, but it's been extinct for 50000 years, so.

We have other scavengers and birds of prey which would happily feast on carrion, but no vultures.

MOO

If the family had Apple watches then likely all movenents could be traced. But totally understand if someone didn't want to be in on a family find my phone -unfortunately it is very interesting!
My teenage son and I both have Apple Watches. We also have iPhones along with my parents and my siblings. None of us have anything linked on find my phones etc. Not ‘interesting’ , more just can’t be bothered! The feature may exist, but that doesn’t mean someone has to use it. So I don’t think anything more needs to be read into it than that (and this is coming from having my own missing person experience with one of those family members last year).

It's about as plausible as the Beast of Bodmin and Nessie, so, salt cellars at the ready.

Like legends of subterranean tunnels under cities and towns or through mountains, stories of big cats roaming the land where they aren't native seems to be something that catches the imagination of many people all over the world.

MOO
I have a growing collection of photos of my spouse looking for:
1. Nessie in Loch Ness
2. Otters in the River Otter in Ottery St Mary
3. Platypuses at a platypus sanctuary in Victoria

Yes, all with zero success, but it does make it more interesting! I suppose I should take looking for panthers in Ballarat next!

Researching know violent offenders in Ballarat is bringing up some morbid reading, inlcluding tales of evidence hidden in mineshafts…

I think I will take a break and let police do their jobs. With news yesterday that the police are honing in with a big team of expert detectives on the case, I am hopeful this is the final push to flush out all possible info and we will have some answers before the public search on Saturday.
I have also taken a break. If Satdee’s search doesn't find her, I doubt she will be in my lifetime.

In case of a dead body in wilderness, there are usually vultures circling the spot.
And sadly, a smell no one ever forgets

"The area where Samantha Murphy went missing has been hit by a recent crime wave,

as a top criminologist claims the mother-of-three

'could still be alive'."

Wouldn't it be easy enough to see if an area had been disturbed, thus not needing to go into the thickness of the bush
True very thick grass can't walk through great place to hide a body but the smell would give it away

I know it’s still very early in the investigation but I’m getting David Prideaux vibes, I hope I’m wrong.

I could set my watch by the frequency of Xanthe Mallet popping up to offer her opinions. I appreciate that really all she said was she hadn’t given up hope because of C. Smith etc but of course she’ll be paraphrased into a headline like that and she must be savvy enough to know and imagine the potentially false hope this might give people, especially those who don’t realise she’s not an advisor to police or anything like that. She frustrates me.

I'm a bit confused here kiwi50. Are you saying that someone had an AVO out against the Murphy's?
Think the words were “someone in the wider family had an AVO” I took it to mean against them, not that they were the victim. It didnt mention Murphy’s themselves.

Breaking as of 12 minutes ago. Phone data is leading police to an area around Mount Clear which is south of Ballarat’s CBD. Hope she is found today!

Not just a TV presenter.

Xanthé Danielle Mallett (/ˈzænθi/; born 17 December 1976) is a Scottish forensic anthropologist, criminologist and television presenter.[1] She specialises in human craniofacial biometrics and hand identification, and behaviour patterns of paedophiles, particularly online.[2] She is a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

She received her bachelor's degree in archaeological sciences from the University of Bradford, a master's degree in biological anthropology at the University of Cambridge, and her doctorate in forensic science from the University of Sheffield.[4]

For five years, she worked at the Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification (CAHID) at the University of Dundee, Scotland,[3] where she was a forensic practitioner and a lecturer of forensic anthropology.[4][5] Mallet stated that her interest in criminology began to increase, which led her to move to Australia in 2012. "My casework experience helped me to realise that I was becoming more interested in investigating the behaviours behind the crimes, rather than identifying the victims and offenders from physical evidence they leave behind," she said. She was a senior lecturer at the University of New England in Armidale, New South Wales,[6] before taking the same role at the University of Newcastle in Newcastle, New South Wales.[7]

Mallett has been published in various academic journals including the International Journal of Legal Medicine and the Journal of Forensic Sciences. In 2014, she published the book Mothers Who Murder: And Infamous Miscarriages of Justice about mothers who kill their own children

If Samantha got lost but had access to water she could still be alive. The chances though would be extremely slim. I typed this into a google search:

What is the longest someone has survived without food and water?

18 days

Mihavecz currently holds the Guinness World Record for this feat, and the lengths he went to just to survive sound truly horrifying. “The longest recorded case of survival without food and water is 18 days by Andreas Mihavecz (Austria), then aged 18,” the record-keeping company says on its website of Mihavecz's feat.29 Oct 2023

From this link...

"Police will today narrow-in on an area at Mount Clear,
south of Ballarat CBD,
as part of their investigation into the suspicious disappearance of the mother-of-three who did not return from a Sunday jog on February 4.

With bushland on both sides of it,
Mount Clear is adjacent to an area called Canadian Plantation,

where Mr Murphy is thought to have been running when she went missing."

Does this mean husband knew where she might have been?

Also,
"Police say
'more parties'
are likely to be involved in missing mother-of-three Samantha Murphy's disappearance three weeks ago."

That's confusing. I'm guessing that's a typo and it should read Ms Murphy instead of Mr.
