uey A U-turn. Uey is formed by abbreviating U-turn and adding –y on the end, a common Australian way of altering words. It is often found in the phrases to chuck a uey or to do a uey, meaning ‘to carry out a U-turn’. The earliest evidence of the term is found in 1973.slll.cass.anu.edu.au
so, it takes 20 weeks to review and pull the evidence together, but the defence only get 2 weeks to review?A police prosecutor said there was "a significant amount of material" in the brief of evidence.
The magistrate ordered police to file the brief to the man's defence team by July 25.

Media outlets to argue for suppression order on identity of Samantha Murphy's accused killer to be lifted
The Ballarat Magistrates' Court ordered the name of a 22-year-old man be suppressed after he was charged with murdering Ballarat mother Samantha Murphy.www.abc.net.au
(Just putting this here so we can find it again if we are looking for the date on which the brief of evidence must be given to the accused. The date is 2 weeks before his committal mention hearing on 8th Aug.)

No. Because it had to be verbetum. I couldn't deviate from the audio. Long ago now.P

Exactly. Then allow lots of time for adjournments for various reasons, the magistrate makes a decision if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial or not. Then another wait for supreme court, then decide what evidence is admissible or not, then long process of jury selection then lots more waiting. Jury decision, then sentencing. Then maybe appeals. Then before we know it, the accused is up for parole. And the victim is still dead, and the family is still suffering. The 8th Aug hearing is a committal mention hearing - not the actual committal hearing, where they decide if the accused stands trial or not.
I believe the mention hearing is just to sort stuff out, get some direction on how this is going to move forward. Because there are three ways a committal can proceed.
This is a handy link ...
After the prosecution brief is disclosed and the accused person or defence have had time to review it, the accused person or defence will need to decide how the committal should proceed. The accused person or defence will often indicate this decision to a Magistrate at a committal mention.
Types of Committal Proceedings
There are three ways that a committal can generally proceed:
- Registry committal;
- Full hand up committal; or
- A committal involving oral evidence from some or all prosecution witnesses.
I think that is what I typed. Uey.according to this article...uey

I’m new to posting but have always followed my thoughts imo is this was sexually motivated perhaps him and his gf have a fight he leaves on foot or in a vehicle heads to the quiet area near the running track to sleep it off / also possibly at the turn around point for Sam imo the only way there is nothing to find in the in the initial search would be strangulation no physical evidence has been found at least that we know of he would have had to move her very quickly imo as mick was Looking for he within a few hrs ?
I think what he gave them was a " no comment" interview .........Shane Patton didn't say the police said nothing for 30 hours. He said the suspect said nothing, nothing , nothing. So it was not a dialogue, but a monologue. The police told him, I presume , what they figured out he had done, and he said nothing. According to Shane Patton, the police Commander.
It would not be wasted time for the detectives, I wouldn't think. They would be able to get a bit of a measure of Mr Stephenson, this being the first time they had spoken with him.
It would have been informative for them, in so far as while he kept his silence, unconscious body movements, facial tics, uncontrolled facial expressions would have been tremendously informative to these detectives for whom this is their bread and butter.

Inside hideout where Samantha Murphy's accused killer was arrested
The rural property where Samantha Murphy's alleged killer allegedly hid out during a month long search is on the market.www.dailymail.co.uk
There’s such a thing as ‘triangulation’ where various towers in the area are pinged, and distance data etc can be obtained to get pretty accurate locations.I understand that phones will ping off a phone tower they are within range of but does anyone know if that just shows all the phones that were within that range, or the specific spot the was phone was located within that range.
Police said when they arrested him that they would be opposing bail, so I’m thinking PS possibly didn’t even apply. Can I ask a random question about bail? I have googled a bit, but I'm hoping those with a bit more experience sleuthing will know the answers for Victoria. Can anyone, accused of any crime, apply for bail? AFAIK, there has been no mention of the accused applying for bail. From prior discussions here it seems that should the accused be found guilty, time spent in remand will come off his sentence, and remand is preferable to big boy prison. I would assume, based on the crime, that bail would be denied. Obviously I can't get inside anyone's head, but if you were not guilty, and confident of not being found guilty, would you not apply for bail to regain your rightful freedom? His hearing (or whatever it is) is 6 months from the time he was arrested. That's a long time just to get to the hearing, I assume a trial will then be many months later, if not a couple of years. That's a long time to sit in remand if you didn't do the crime. MOO
Thanks SA. I decided to check ahead a bit, as I attempt to catch up, and sure enough you’ve covered it.Comm Patton said they interviewed the accused for a "number of hours".
9News said that he said they questioned the accused for more than 30 hours. Link
I am guessing that the quoted "number of hours" is correct, and the "30 hours" is the 9News own deduction of .... he was arrested around 6am, charged some time the following afternoon, that is more than 30 hours.
"The man was interviewed over a number of hours, a number of search warrants have been executed, as a result of those investigations, he has today been charged with the murder of Samantha.
Will be alleging that murder occurred at Mount Clear the day she disappeared. In the interview with the suspect, he has not disclosed to police where her body is. I want to be very clear on limiting what I can say given there has now been a charge of murder laid.
This investigation is far from over though ....... "
Victoria police say investigation into alleged murder of Samantha Murphy ‘far from over’
I think you did it wellNo. Because it had to be verbetum. I couldn't deviate from the audio. Long ago now.
It is very common not to know the details of alleged crimes before the actual criminal trial.Ever since Samantha failed to return from her run, we the people know absolutely nothing about what happened to her. We know people's opinions, we know who the police have arrested, we have police statements about this and that, but we still know nothing. How usual is this in similar scenarios I wonder.
