SAR searches for cell phone

a game of telephone is never an accurate thing.

now we've got a game of telephone over 5 alleged cell-phones via twitter.

:shakehead: *emma passes out chill pills for the thread*

So are there 5 pre-paid cell phones?

She insists the three of them – DeDe, Terri and her – only got the phones because the new AT&T service would allow them to make calls out of the Horman home at Shelter Nook Road. The home is in a remote area that does not receive Verizon service, which is what the friends had.

What remains unclear is why two additional prepaid phones were purchased at another store in downtown Portland the next day under the same fake name used at the Lloyd Center. The friend said she knows those phones were paid for in cash but she did not make the purchase.

clearly this sounds like four phones to me... but pass the chill pills miss peel... cause I missed the fifth phone LOL

eta: actually make that five... I guess I cannot count too well

I agree with those questioning the idea that Terri would need the AT&T phone for coverage at home, since presumably she would have already had a cell phone that could be used at home.

I also question the friend's assertion that she used the fake name "on the spur of the moment", considering that more phones were purchased with the same fake name the next day. Sounds a little bit more planned than just some impulse to make up a name. I mean, it even could have been something very legitimate, like that they didn't want it to leak to the media that they were getting new phones, or that they were involved with Terri. But she didn't say that...

Why four? They list three phones in the first paragraph (DDS, TH, and the friend who is ratting them all out). Then they say two more were purchased the next day. That sounds like five to me--what am I missing?

Man, I'm spinnin, How many dang cell phones are we talkin about here 50 or 60 now? What days were they bought? How many friend's are involved 10 or 20? Whew, I am in dire need of some clarification.

WAIT A MINUTE. I might have figured out what this poorly written piece is getting at. The three women each got a new phone. The unnamed friend bought one for herself, using the fake name. The next day the other two women each got one, using the same fake name. Three, right? Just guessing, really, about whether this is the implication.

Let's back up.

They're searching in the woods for a cell phone? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Presumably, these phones were bought at some point after Kyron's disappearance. Now, after he went missing, when would TH have had unaccompanied time to be out wandering in the woods.

Of course, the story could get even more complicated. Assume for a moment that TH was "handing Kyron off" to someone to hold for her. She might have had a bat phone to contact them with. Logically, she would have met her accomplices in a remote (woodsy?) area. What if she lost the phone? Then she might have needed a replacement, and convinced her friends to get her one on the grounds that she needed a phone to talk privately with them. It might also explain the supposed 2 additional phones bought the following day - maybe the friends didn't know about the last two, and TH hoped that when/if the purchases were discovered, nobody would notice that there were an extra 2 phones.

Spicher is said to have helped Terri Horman buy an untraceable cell phone, and lived with her for a few weeks after Kyron's dissappearance.

"...This is not a search-and-rescue," McCain told the morning show. "This is a forensic search for criminal evidence, more than likely, something very specific that Dede told them about. It could even very well be one of these untraceable cell phones."

This quote came from McCain who seems to be speculating, so I'm not sure the searchers are looking for a cell phone or phones. JMO

That is absolutely HUGE information if the phones were bought the day Kyron disappeared--but is it true???

Who would be able to report what Dede testified to in GJ? I thought GJ testimony was sealed? Anyone?

If this is true, it is crazy. My mind is blown thinking about this. I would assume the only way for this tesimony to get out is if the witness stated it. Geez......

We are wondering and waiting for clarification. This would tip me off the fence as well as some others. NurseBeeMe said she had asked the reporter to clarify.. but nothing yet. I am wondering if the reporter is hastily sketching out a nice little retraction?

But if it IS true... Wow. Just Wow.

It is all very odd, but I can clarify some info regarding cell service in general for both this and other cases.
It is quite possible to have an area where Verizon doesn't work, but ATT does, they don't generally share towers as they are two major competitors. I have phones on 3 different services for this reason specifically.
It is possible that she had verizon but it didn't work at the house.
It is possible that they all went out and got ATT so they could talk to each other, by doing this the minutes used talking to each other would not count, they're free minutes and unlimited inside the same network.
It is possible that they used fake names to keep it from being found out in relation to a divorce or affair.
It is possible that it all had nothing to do with Kyron.
With that being said, if the phones were all purchased on the day of his disappearance, it still has the chance of being a total coincidence, but I gotta say that would be very suspect in my book!
HTH clear up some confusion about cell sites, etc. (familymembers in the industry, know more than I ever wanted to on the subject, lol)

Me either. If there is a tower in range for an ATT phone to use, the same tower could be used by the Verizon phone - the Verizon phone might just be roaming to use the closest tower. At least this is my understanding...

I could be wrong...

I checked with Verizon. They don't have coverage in that area. They apparently don't share that tower. Their coverage stops right at Sheltered Nook.

Has there been any real confirmation on a search for the cell phones or is this just all speculation and spiraling like crazy because of some comment a reporter made?

I also think McCain has something to do with this idea, I think he was speculating only about the nature of the SAR around Skyline Elementary. JMO

I agree with matou.. it is a combination of one newsoutlet piggybacking off the next... and changing a word here and there until it is FUBAR as my DH would say.

FWIW, I even tried to email the fox reporter and the mailbox is full so my message gets sent back to me. Aint that nice?
