GUILTY SC - Christine Parcell 41, fatally stabbed by concert pianist, Greenville, 13 Oct 2021 *Arrest*

  • #501
In his testimony yesterday, the self-identified murderer admitted that he made a false protective services claim in hopes that the child would disclose her abuse. The claim was unsubstantiated because it was false. This murderer helped to create an atmosphere where abuse, if it was occurring, might not be discovered. Lying to create a case is fraught with all kinds of issues while it puts a child who might be abused in a situation that is more dangerous if an abuser wishes to not be caught.

There seems to be credible information that the victim in this case was doing some horrible things to this child and others. That said, false complaints AND murder are not the way to go about getting this child out of harms way. The admitted murderer is just that an admitted murderer, not a hero. We can't live in a vigilante justice society. JMHO.

The judge is starting off today going over the charges against Hughes ahead of the jury arriving at 10:30 AM. The state asked the judge to eliminate the language of malice from charges. The state requests that if the judge does not want to eliminate the word malice, then it should be amended to without lawful cause.

The state argues that the defense is continuing to attempt to get the sexual assault allegations against Parcell in front of the jury.

The defense argues that they are trying to show the state of mind Hughes was in at the time. The defense submitted the jury instructions as a court exhibit. The defense is objecting to parts of the jury instructions. The first objection is over the instructions to find guilt. The defense asks that the judge amends the instructions to add "until and unless you reach a verdict" or that "not guilty" be added. The second objection from the defense is over the example included in the section on malice. The defense asks that the example is removed. The third objection comes from pages 17-18 and is over the definition of harassment.

a few seconds ago

The defense asks that the judge removes the word victim from the definition of harassment. The defense says that the word victim is not used anywhere else and that they would like it removed because they believe it is a legal presumption.

The defense asks that the language under the harassment second degree charge on page 18 be changed from saying: if the jury finds the defendant not guilty of first degree, they may find the defendant guilty of second degree, to telling the jury that they may consider the charge. The judge granted this request and will look at the others.

The judge announced a break and said that court will resume at 10:30 AM when the jury arrives.

A very very late posting from Feb. 14.

@cathyrusson

Stab wounds and incise wounds on #ChristinaParcell. This case baffles me. Someone getting stabbed this many times usually means it's very personal/someone personally involved with the victim.

I think the alleged abuse by her mother is a fabrication and that it is just (horrible) coincidence that Christine had very bad taste in men. JMO.
There were 1000's of photos of her and her daughter.

They should have done Post's trial first IMO.

What if it turns out there were indeed tens of thousands of images and videos and they were being distributed and sold to abusers? And that the wild and outlandish allegations that have been made, not yet verified, are true?

Conversely, let's just imagine there's zero truth to the allegations, not a single image, not a single complaint, and no abuse evidence whatsoever and the daughter confirms nothing happened. There we would see the accused is a vulnerable man who has been wildly and horrifically manipulated by Mello, we would see that ZH is gullible and lacks boundaries and has been weaponised by an abuser. We would maybe see a psychiatrist comment that this sort of thing is a particular severe mental health disorder, that ZH has been exploited due to his profound vulnerabilities.

I suspect there is proof of the allegations and maybe Mello desperately tried to go through the correct channels. In the end perhaps he wound up and motivated ZH to act on his behalf, don't suppose ZH needed or wanted the money on offer, he's not a 'hit man'. Why didn't ZH just deploy an actual hit man or do the job himself one wonders? If there is proof it should be informed to the jury IMO. MOO JMO

I can't speak to the accuracy of Mello's claims.

Even in this mixed-up world my sense is that accusations of CSAM are likely to be taken seriously by authorities, even when advanced as part of a custody dispute, and especially when a victim is able to testify to them.

I don't see any way that Mello's assertions alone justify or even explain a murder as brutal and bizarre as this one. That way lies Pizzagate, and worse.

Agree with posters above that this trial sequence seems off, but perhaps the idea was to litigate the murder case first, and then follow on with the linked ones.

I do think that ZH was in some ways particularly vulnerable to Mello's narratives, and that Mello fully deserves his charges. IMO, JMO, etc.

The judge is back in the courtroom and the jury just entered for the day.

The judge says we will continue now with cross examination and invited Hughes to the stand.

a few seconds ago

The state asked one question to Hughes. The state asked if Hughes remembers how he moved Parcell's body. Hughes responded saying that he did not remember, but believed that he grabbed her ankle to move Parcell's body. The state said that is the only question they had. The defense did not redirect.

The jury has exited the courtroom.

The trial of Zachary Hughes has resumed. The jury has entered the courtroom and the State has begun cross-examination of the defendant.

Solicitor Walt Wilkins has taken the lead and began by putting a photo of Christina Parcell's body in front of the jury.

Wilkins asks Hughes if he dragged Parcell by the arms or ankles when he moved her body. Hughes says he doesn't remember but he believes by her arms. Wilkins has no further questions. There is no re-direct.

The defense has no further witnesses. The jury has been sent back to the jury room.

I sure wasn’t expecting a one question cross examination.
I don’t remember CP’s body at the crime scene ever being shown up till today. There were pictures of rose petals and bloody floors and couches. Correct if I’m wrong about that.
Maybe the prosecution felt the jury needed to see what ZH did to her. The calm controlled man who testified he struggled and hesitated to hit her or “strike” her, stabbed her repeatedly.
He said he felt unimaginable relief afterward. Most serial killers report that also I think.
This morning I watched ZH’s early testimony yesterday that I missed because our internet was out. I thought his testimony about his adopted sister Grace was weird. He’s sitting there with no emotion, talking about her cold shark eyes, how manipulative and evil she was etc, and all I could think of was he was describing himself.

Just my thoughts

I don't know what we can believe.

Firstly, Hughes has been sitting in jail for years, preparing for this, rehearsing what he will say. It is, of course, the most important performance of his life.

I don't believe that a concert pianist gets on stage and just spontaneously, genuinely, expresses the music, that he just that moment remembers the tune and taps it out on the keys. Every detail of the performance has been practiced and polished (usually with a coach) and rehearsed hundreds of times.

The other problem is, he and the defense know perfectly well that authorities are not going to challenge his claims about CP.

They are not going to submit evidence to prove he is lying.

Firstly, because it has nothing to do with the case. Motive doesn't matter to whether he is guilty or not.

Secondly, because it is highly illegal for authorities to discuss in public the names of anyone - but especially minors - who are or aren't victims of any sort of abuse.

Hughes' defense lawyers know this. So they have instructed him to lay it on with a trowel.

We know that Hughes and Mello were, in the months before the murder, widely distributing pornographic photos of Christine to allege she was a prostitute. That was their obsession. (IMO the photos were ones Mello himself had taken).

They even sent those photos to Bradley Post! If they believe Post and Christine were making CP, why would they send nude photos of Christine to him, alleging she was an escort? Is that the behaviour of people who believe Post was making 🤬🤬🤬🤬 himself?

I think Mello has successfully waged a campaign of disinformation based on what he heard in the media after the murder.

And what Hughes really wants, IMO, is that his family and the public not see that he did it for money, probably while he was seriously addicted to drugs.

JMO
