You keep posting that notion, but any discussion of almost any event is going to include suggestions for alternative conduct. The fact that almost all of us agree that body slamming a student is wrong implies we think the RO should have done something else.

The suggestions get one-sided though, and some posters are only focused on the student's behaviour and what she should have done to prevent what happened to her. As if once she refused to leave the room all the adults in the room were helpless to behave in any other way.

But I'm with you on the body slamming was wrong and the SRO should have done something else.

Possibly. But I think he was an experienced teacher. Surely this was not the first defiant student ha has ever dealt with. What was so different in this situation that he was ill equipped to deal with her?

If the Vice Principal asks you to come to the office to discuss it, you cannot 'apologize' and say ' I didn't do anything wrong, so I am not leaving..." That<<< is not an 'apology.'

He has had in a choke hold, just like the one that killed Eric Garner. Now that I think about this more, the cop should be charged with attempted murder.

But I'm with you on the body slamming was wrong and the SRO should have done something else.

Once the teacher had 'picked his battle' with her, and she refused to accept his authority, he was in a bad position. EVERY student was watching him at that point. It was about more than the one girl then because now the others are watching to see if he is going to back down. It is hard to keep order and control in a room when the students do not believe you will back up your demands.

Maybe he could have handled it better. But it was a judgment call and it was what it was. He asked for her phone, as was described in the rule/regs of the school, and she denied him. It was not about 'ego' , IMO. It was about him showing the class that he meant business when he spoke.

Have you ever been in a class where the students have no respect nor 'fear' that their teacher is in charge? NOTHING gets done and nothing is taught.

It is sad to me that the teacher is being criticized for sticking to the rules of the classroom.

I seem to recall this same conversation from earlier today. I posted a link in the last thread. It was (according to the male student) the administrator she was apologetic with and saying she did nothing wrong.
And yes you can be apologetic and still hold firm. IMO

How would that go? I'm really sorry that I'm not listening to you or obeying your warnings to leave the classroom?

Are you talking about the kids who walked out of class yesterday? I would say despite their act of defiance they are broken and brainwashed.

Well, that's a great way to completely dismiss the valid responses of the students who attend that school, who were there that day, who know the disruptive student and the teacher and the SRO. If they don't see things the same way you do, the only explanation is that they're broken and brainwashed.

That's extremely disrespectful toward the other students at that school, dismissing their thoughts and feelings with such contempt and disdain. Especially the other minority students. Why can you not listen respectfully to what they have to say, and give them credit for having valid thoughts and feelings of their own?

I find that notion a bit hard to swallow myself. I don't see the student being choked even for a second in the videos that I've watched.

C'mon people. She didn't rob a bank or murder anyone. She questioned an order and balked. So much pomposity.
She isn't doomed to have a rough road ahead or to fail.

And likewise, the SRO didn't beat her up, didn't choke her, or Tase her, or shoot her, or punch her. All he did was remove her from her desk when she refused to comply with a lawful and perfectly reasonable order.

Do you have some source to suggest that she said that? If not, why are you even raising it as a possibility? Why start with distrust and hurtful assumptions (even in hypotheticals)?
