GUILTY SC - Five Jones children, ages 1-8, Lexington County, 28 Aug 2014 *Father Arrested*

  • #801
What a vile, vile, man. After the school reported him to DSS, he refused to sign N's daily homework & then sent the homework folder back ripped in two? Didn't speak with the school again? Didn't show up for N's graduation?!!

  • #802
There is no doubt that this jury will sentence him to death.

Moran steps down from the stand.
Next up for the prosecution: Jonathan Stone, Nahtahn's kindergarten teacher. Stone describes Nahtahn as "quiet, but everyone loved him. He had the biggest smile."

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 6m6 minutes ago
Jonathan Stone, Nahtahn's Kindergarten teacher, is on the stand now. He says you had to smile back when you saw the boy and that everyone loved him. @wachfox #TimothyJones

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3m3 minutes ago
Stone says Nahtahn was always smiling, but sometimes he says, it just felt like he was smiling but he wasn't actually happy. There were some days that he just had to give him a hug.

This testimony is brutal to listen to. Teachers from Saxe Gotha Elementary who taught the Jones children can be considered victims in this case too, many of which continue to grapple with their deaths almost five years later. ⁦@wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 8m8 minutes ago
Stone says Nahtahn told him that whenever he got in trouble at home, his father made him do burpees or run in place. Also, Stone tried to reassure Nahtahn that school was a safe place where he wouldn't need to be afraid.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 10m10 minutes ago
Now we're hearing from 6 y/o Nahthan's kindergarten teacher, who testified while he always had a smile on his face, he didn't feel like he was always happy. Said he was shocked when Nahtahn showed him how he was punished at home, demonstrating a "burpee." @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 7m7 minutes ago
Nahtahn's teacher tells the jury communication with Tim Jones ceased to exist about halfway through the 2013-14 school year. He also stopped sending home reports of any minor misbehavior in class, because Nahtahn would come to school emotional the next day. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 5m5 minutes ago
Nahtahn's teacher says he worried about his weight and if he was getting enough to eat--so he always offered him extra snacks. "I was trying to make him feel loved and wanted him to have a normal life. I wanted him to walk into that school and feel part of a family." @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 24m24 minutes ago
Stone now starts talking about how he saw marks on Nahtahn's neck one day that looked like "bruises" caused by "an adult hand." School officials reported that to the Department of Social Services.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 23m23 minutes ago
Stone says all communication with Jones Jr. ended after the first report to DSS. He recalls a time when Nahtahn came back to school after a weekend and a "heavy plastic" folder was ripped in two.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 20m20 minutes ago
Stone testifies that no one showed up for Nahtahn at his Kindergarten graduation. #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 21m21 minutes ago
Stone says Jones did not show up to Nahtahn's kindergarten graduation ceremony. Prosecution displays a kindergarten diploma Nahtahn earned at the end of the school year.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 47m47 minutes ago
On the day of 6 y/o Nahtahn's kindergarten graduation, Tim Jones did not show up. Nor did anyone else, for that matter--testifies Jonathan Stone, his kindergarten teacher. @wis10

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 33m33 minutes ago
Stone starts to cry as he remembers when he found out Nahtahn and his siblings had been killed by their father. He says he told a school official that he had to go home. He cries, saying he went home and hugged his two year old son. @wachfox #TimothyJones

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 17m17 minutes ago
Stone talks about when he found out Nahtahn was missing, saying "he broke down" and he straight home and hugged his two year old son. When he remembers Nahtahn, he starts to tear up on the stand.
He steps down from the stand, which leads Judge Griffith to call for a break.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 43m43 minutes ago

"I’m leaving Saxe Gotha because I keep seeing him in those halls everyday, I need a change," Nahtahn's teacher says through tears. He steps down, the jury takes a short break. I think we all need one. @wis10

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 32m32 minutes ago

Stone says Nahtahn's death is the reason he is changing schools. Cries he needs to move on with his life because he can't see the smiling picture of the boy with pizza stains on his shirt everyday. #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 15m15 minutes ago
When he wrapped up his testimony, Stone says the reason he's leaving Saxe Gotha Elementary is because he can't stop seeing Nahtahn with "his white t-shirt covered in pizza stains" in the hallways each day.

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 33m33 minutes ago
Jonathan Stone, Nahtahn's kindergarten teacher at Saxe Gotha, explains why he's choosing to leave the school for another within the district this upcoming year. @wis10

Teacher Jonathan Stone describes what it's like to walk the halls of Saxe Gotha Elementary--without his former student Nahtahn Jones there. @wis10

(video clip: Caroline Hecker on Twitter )

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 14m14 minutes ago
Tim Jones Jr. showed emotion as testimony was given by teachers that taught 8 y/o Merah and 7 y/o Eli. But so far, some of the most heartbreaking testimony is about 6 y/o Nahtahn--and Jones hasn't showed any emotion. @wis10

Caroline Hecker‏Verified account @CHecker_WIS 2m2 minutes ago
Nahtahn Jones' kindergarten teacher talks about the bruising he noticed on his neck, which prompted a call to DSS. He told his teachers his dad had choked him, slammed him up against a wall and held him there. @wis10

Amy Shearer is crying so hard she's having a hard time completing her sentences. The teacher's assistant says Nahtahn told her his father picked him up by the throat and slammed him against the wall after the child broke a track his older brother played. #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 22m22 minutes ago
Up next on the stand: Amy Shearer, who worked as a classroom assistant to Jonathan Stone (Nahtahn's kindergarten teacher at Saxe Gotha).

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 20m20 minutes ago
Shearer says she remembers Nahtahn's smile and how he always came into the classroom with his shoes untied. She starts getting emotional when she talks about when Nahtahn told her about the bruises on his neck.

Shearer says, after the DSS report was made, Nahtahn was more withdrawn and distant. Echoes similar testimony from Stone, who noticed similar behaviors and said all communication with Jones ceased after that point.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 13m13 minutes ago
Throughout testimony about the three oldest children, we've seen Jones get more emotional when people have described Merah and Elias, but when witnesses have talked about Nahtahn, he's remained very stoic.

Courtney King‏ @CourtReportKing 5m5 minutes ago
Shearer cries that after it happened, it was months before she didn't wake up in the middle of the night screaming from nightmares. #TimothyJones @wachfox

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 6m6 minutes ago
On the stand, Shearer is wearing a handmade gift that Nahtahn made especially for her. She said she went months where she woke up in the middle of the night, screaming to get "out of this nightmare."

NEW: The state rests in the second phase of the Timothy Jones Jr. trial. The defense will call its witnesses next. @wis10

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 3m3 minutes ago
After Shearer steps down from the stand, Solicitor Hubbard says the state RESTS in the sentencing phase of the Timothy Jones Jr. murder trial. Judge Griffith calls for a break.

Those burpees, they are brutal, even for my teenager son who has to do three minute intervals of them at swimteam drylands warming ups. Those teenage young man suffer when they do them. And they have training 5x/week :( TJ has that personality type that cannot place himself in someone else's shoes. Funest for a father. And perhaps the inclination to not even want to, for his shoes are the only "right" shoes.

He is a sad failure of our species.

With all due respect to the pastor, so what if Tim Jr. read scriptures, there is no literal interpretation of the Bible that says thou shalt beat or strangle your babies, and murder is not a "mistake" one makes.

(And I guess all this focus on religion reflects what both sides assume/know about the jury?).

It's scraping the bottom of a long empty barrel to present as mitigation the fact that Tim Jr. didn't assault his LE handlers when they were transporting him.

And ...big mistake to try to suggest again that Tim Jr. is schizophrenic.

Rev. Breen steps down from the stand. Next up for the defense: Barry Sowards of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 15m15 minutes ago

Sowards says he transports Jones and other defendants during criminal trials, making sure they get to court on time and are properly dressed. He says he's never been uncomfortable with Jones and that he hasn't done anything suspicious when he was around.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 9m9 minutes ago
Sgt. Sowards says Jones has been "a little more chatty" since they took him off his medication, but one day, he told Sowards that he was hearing voices again, and he wanted to talk to a doctor.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 5m5 minutes ago
Sgt. Sowards says Jones personally does not make him uncomfortable, but the "level of the charges he faces" does.

Tim Scott‏ @TimScottTV 2m2 minutes ago
After Sowards steps down from the stand, court adjourns for the day. Defense only called up two witnesses.

Thank you YESorNO for posting tweets and updates. IMO, there is no mitigating factors for this "man".

Teachers remembers kids killed by dad in death penalty trial

Jun 7, 2019

"COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Kindergarten teacher Johnathan Stone stopped sending frowny faces home with student Nahtahn Jones when he misbehaved because the boy would come back to school very emotional, saying he had to exercise for hours....

Prosecutors called two teachers and a teaching assistant to the stand Friday to show the personality of Jones' children....

Prosecutors rested their case in the sentencing phase Friday morning. Jones' lawyers were expected to call witnesses to show how he managed to put himself through college with a wife and kids and land an $80,000-a-year job as a computer engineer as they try to humanize him and ask for mercy. They also expect to emphasize Jones' mental problems , which they said included undiagnosed schizophrenia — the same disorder that left his mother in a mental hospital for more than two decades.

Stone's teaching assistant also testified, saying she reported a bruise in the shape of an adult's fingers she found on Nahtahn to social workers after he said his father threw him against the wall when he broke his younger brother's toy.

A short time later, Amy Shearer said Nahtahn's homework folder came back to school ripped in half. The boy told her his dad did it....

Elias' first grade teacher also testified, saying he was a friend and tried to help everyone...."

Agreed. The defense has nothing. Their only possibility was insanity which the jury has rejected and bringing it up again is...insane.
Frankly after the testimony the last two days I’m kinda surprised a mob hasn’t appeared outside the courthouse with torches and pitchforks.

I remember that murder too. Her name was Savannah Hardin, and she was 9 years old. Her grandmother forced her to run for 3 straight hours, even though Savannah begged for rest, and even after she began vomiting, still running.

Savannah's grandmother killed her because she lied (no doubt out of terror) about eating a candy bar.

-----
As for whether or not this jury will vote DP? Can't think of very many surer trial outcomes. The defence asked them to consider the value of Tim Jr.'s life, and told them they could look anywhere & consider anything as mitigation. What value? What mitigation? He has never even pretended to take responsibility or to feel remorse.

The best his defence team could offer to try to save his life is that Jr. is "sick" (already rejected by jury), that his family had suffered enough death, and that God could find uses for him "in dark places."

It's not a close call.
I remember that case well.

I'm so sorry for these educators to have to go through this. But I'm so glad that these children had these educators on their side. To stop sending home critical reports because they realized the child was being overly punished, is very perceptive. That's amazing.
