Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said his office was called to a home on Milliken Street in Pacolet Saturday night, about possible remains being found, WYFF reported.

Clevenger said the remains were discovered while the home was undergoing renovations.

The remains will be submitted to a forensic anthropologist for more information, Clevenger said.

“Based on our limited information, it is believed the remains have been concealed for a long period of time,” Clevenger said in a release. He told reporters the investigation is in its early stages, adding it is possible the remains may have been there for decades.

He said anthropology exams take much longer than pathology exams, so it could take several months to get the report back.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said his office was called to a residence on Milliken Street regarding possible remains being found within a wall.

He said remains were found and taken to a forensic anthropologist for examination.

"Based on our limited information, it is believed the remains have been concealed for a long period of time," Clevenger stated.

"Our investigation is in the beginning stages at this point," he stated.

"Anthropology exams take much longer than pathology exams," Clevenger wrote in an email to media outlets. "Please be mindful that it may take me several months to obtain the report from our forensic anthropology in this case."

The coroner says the investigation is in the beginning stages at this point and that his office will be following up with law enforcement after the exam "to determine other aspects of the investigation."

According to Zillow (if I've found the correct house), the place has sold once in the last 16 years, and was built in 1920.

Oh wow. If that's the case, and we get the approximate time of death, shouldn't be too hard to narrow down a suspect.

Wow. 1920. This might solve an old cold case.

County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said the remains have likely been inside the wall for a very long time, perhaps decades.

Clevenger commented on the case Sunday.

“We are human. If we ever got to where it didn't affect us a little bit, then we don't need to be doing this because we're a caring group of individuals who are trying to do a forensic job. I can't say enough about my team,” said Clevenger.

In his 30 years as the Spartanburg County Coroner, Clevenger said this is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

“It does shock the conscience of most people,” Clevenger said. “I would say 99.9% of the people, it would definitely shock them, but we move forward.”

The investigation is in the beginning stages, but Clevenger said they believed the remains have been concealed for a long period of time.

“We have already talked to our pathologist and our anthropologist about this. We’re going to refer it to the anthropologist, forensic anthropologist, and it takes an amount of time to be able to catalogue all the bones,” Clevenger said.

I’ve been doing this several years, I think that’s the first time I’ve come across something like that.” Pacolet Police Department Chief John Alexander said.

Alexander said fetal skeletal remains were found in a home over the weekend, while the owners were remodeling.

“One of the owners noticed some cloth wraps in there, and he pulled it out and they opened it up and realized it was some type of bone,” Alexander said.

The house on Milliken Street sits near the old mill, according to a property record search. The house was built in 1915.

“It takes an amount of time for them to be able to catalog all the bones. There’s special consideration that they go thru,” Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

“It could be 40, 50, 60-years-old for all we know. At that point, it’s going to be so hard to find any type of information,” Alexander said.

Foetal remains, hm. So it's very possible no crime has been committed. Sounds like someone had a miscarriage and for some reason was scared (abusive husband, teenage pregnancy, etc) and couldn't be open about it, so she hid the foetus in the wall.

I would agree. A miscarriage or preterm delivery/stillborn etc. One of those cases that just makes me feel sad for everyone involved.

Assessor information for the house suggests it was originally built in 1915. The "effective year built" (date of major construction or renovations) is 1960. I'd think the remains could have been there since 1960 or after based on that information.

I found this:

It shows he was a resident at one time at the address in question.

Anyone contact the county clerk or county records to see past owners for this property?

I located this:

William Okirby in Pacolet, SC also William O Kirby (aka)

Theory:

Was the UID child found within the wall that would indicate if it was placed from WITHIN and INSIDE the house walls or is it POSSIBLE that the child was placed in the wall FROM THE OUTSIDE?

I ask because what if the child was hidden in the wall but put there from the outside? Could this child be from when the house was FIRST built c.1915-20?

Did the baby end up there much later 50s -70s? 80s, 90s, 2000s?

Was the baby from a family member of one of the families that once lived there?

Was the baby placed in the wall by a 3rd party TOTALLY unconnected to the families that once lived there?

So many questions! I live in SC and no one talks about this yet it was a news blip for like two days then silence!
