It said Court was in Recess, I don't know if they can clear the entire building and get everyone back in, but hey the Judge said they'd be back at 2:30 so I really don't know what the heck is going on. Hah

MOO
For sure, liking taking a roller coaster ride with a blindfold on.

It was bound to happen—not necessarily a bomb threat, but something. Like others, I expected it to be a medical emergency for AM.

A News 2 photographer said that law enforcement was sweeping gear on the lawn of the courthouse earlier in the day.

Remember yesterday morning the Judge said one juror was in the ER and was being replaced by an alternate?

It sure does remind me of the last minute “ chaos “ at the Russell Lafitte trial. JMO

He was the CEO of Palmetto Bank and AM’s accomplice in stealing money.

And now today’s chaos.

On Dec. 6, Daniel and Austin filed a 35-page motion seeking a new trial or a judgement for acquittal for their convicted client, and on Dec. 20 filed a motion requesting a hearing on the matter in federal court.

The motion contends that, after "nearly ten hours of deliberations, two jurors were improperly dismissed andreplaced with alternates, only to have a newly constituted jury return a guilty verdict 40 minutes later. One of those jurors requested removal based on her dissenting status, and the error in her removal constitutes a miscarriage of justice."

One juror was removed because she was feeling "serious anxiety," and another said she was "pressured" by other jurors to change her decision.

Lawyers have confirmed to journalists and author Jason Ryan, on the ground on behalf of The Hampton County Guardian, that this was a bomb threat. Ryan told The Guardian that law enforcement have not only evacuated the courthouse, but cleared the entire block of all reporters and public spectators. There is a heavy police presence in the area, and law enforcement have formed a perimeter around the courthouse square.

From SLED at the scene, "A bomb threat was received by Colleton County courthouse personnel. The building has been evacuated and SLED along with the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the threat. No additional information is available from SLED at this time."

Ryan reports that Murdaugh's family members, including his surviving son, Richard "Buster" Murdaugh Jr., were among the first evacuated.

I have a question about the closing arguments being factual. It seems to me that at times DH went beyond persuasive language to flat out misleading lies. Can lawyers lie? There seems to be no real boundaries. Can DH just tell the jury a pack of lies or does he have to honor the evidence?

I also have a comment on the caregiver. I'm from Kentucky and my uncle was the ”help” for families through the years. One of the most taboo things was to talk about the family's business/secrets. For this woman to have to testify had to go against everything she'd learned working for people. But lying she could not do. Stealing as well. I can't imagine the conflict she felt. MOO.

God bless her soul.
At Closing Arguments Lawyers can say whatever they want to persuade Jurors. I have seen Lawyers twist facts in evidence, and even repeat what they tried to have a person testify to as fact, though it was proven untrue. Very limited experience here. MOO

Well that one can still be used along with several other diversionary tactics.

I am curious if there are any other trials or hearings going on in other courtrooms today where a delay or postponement would be really advantageous. And I wonder what the bag check policy is for the other parts of this courthouse. I've only seen one or two times people's bags being checked as they wait in line for the Murdaugh trial.

Who was supposed to testify in the afternoon? Anyone really damaging to AM?
Would defense people be dirty enough to stop trial right now? Who ever will be tracked and caught hopefully!

No, they cannot lie during a closing argument. However, I’ve seen the defense take great liberties during their closings. It’s rare for the prosecution to object, but possible if statements are egregious.

From the ABA: “The lawyers’ closing arguments or summations discuss the evidence and properly drawn inferences. The lawyers cannot talk about issues outside the case or about evidence that was not presented.”
