Back to financial crimes - Waters: Would you agree that your stealing increased after the boat wreck?
#AlexMurdaugh: No, sir I don't agree with that. I continued to do it....I don't think I took more money ...after the boat wreck than before
Waters: You wouldn't agree with me that in 2019 alone you stole about 3.7 million dollars? AM: That's correct. AM admits that was more in any one year period than before.
Waters going over AM's reported income each year - showing the money he was legitimately making at the law firm was trending down - though still a lot of money. But AM continued to steal money.
And yet, as
@MandyMatney just pointed out,
#AlexMurdaugh has pleaded not guilty to all the financial crimes. I guess he'll get around to pleading guilty?
Waters: These are all real people.. (people AM stole from) AM: They are real people...that I cared about...a lot of them are people that I love. Waters: Yes, you hurt the people that you love. (BAM)
Financial crimes are the theory of the state's motive so Waters needs to drive that home but at some point he does need to move on. I think it's pretty obvious at this point what a liar and horrible person Alex Murdaugh is.
AM confronts Waters saying his attorneys tried to talk to and have a sit down with Waters and he wouldn't do it. Then a little storm inside that courtroom happens:
AM admits yesterday is the first time he'd ever said "openly" that he was at the kennels that night.
AM still doubles down that he was "begging" for a meeting with Waters to get all this out up until the time he was charged with the murders of Paul and Maggie.
Waters: The reality is the reason why no one's ever heard that (kennel) before is because you had to sit in this courtroom and hear testimony you were on the kennel video so you had to back up and make a new story.
Were you aware that as late as Nov. 2022 your own lawyer was repeating your story that you were at home napping? AM: I don't know, in jail we don't get newspapers and TV is limited.
Finally to the day of the murders.
#AlexMurdaugh repeats he got home around 6:40...rode the property with Paul.
Waters asks if AM and Paul had a 300 Blackout rifle with them when they were riding the property. AM says no.
Waters: When did you go back to the house after riding around with Paul? AM says he went back when Maggie got there. AM and Maggie were there before Paul returned.
Waters: When did you take the shower? AM: I believe when I first went in the house (8pm ish) Waters: And Maggie was already there? AM: Yeah
AM said after he showered he came out and ate dinner on the couch. He said it didn't take him long to shower.
AM says he's not certain how/when Paul and Maggie ended up at the kennels, but he's almost certain that went to the kennels together.
Waters: How much longer after Maggie left did you go to the kennels? AM: Fairly quickly. AM told the jury yesterday Maggie asked him to go and he said no, then he decided to go down.
Waters: How long did it take you to get to the kennels in the golf cart? AM: A couple minutes.
KENNEL VIDEO: AM says the kennel video must have been taken 'very shortly' after he arrived. Waters: Did you tell Maggie at that time you were going to Almeda? AM: I don't believe so.
AM says he pulled up in the golf cart right where Maggie was. She was standing to the left of the chicken coop. AM says he stayed on the golf cart until he got off to take the chicken from Bubba.
I can't hear "Paul Paul" one more time…………..
"I was getting ready to do what I didn't want to do." (Freudian slip?)
Waters keeps getting in there, "according to your NEW story..."
AM agrees it was probably somewhere around 8:47pm when he got back on the golf cart and headed back.
If AM leaves at 8:47 , it's about two minutes to get back to the house on the golf cart. That's 8:49pm. AM goes in the house and lays down on the couch. Waters: Before you said you were napping for an hour so but now you dozed for a second according to your "new story”
AM's phone is recording steps at 9:02pm. That's about 12 minutes on the couch.
Waters: Did you hear anything at all during that time period? AM: No, I didn’t.
You couldn't hear Blackout shots? AM: No Waters brings up AM told police that he thought Paul and Maggie had pulled back up to the house. He's backing away from that statement saying he never "heard" them pull up.
AM: Other than lying to LE about being at the kennels, I was cooperative with law enforcement. Waters: Very cooperative except with the fact that you were at the murder scene w/the victims just minutes before they died, right?
15 minute break.
