Detectives “arrested and charged Lana Sue Clayton with Murder and Unlawful Malicious Tampering of Food of her husband Stephen Delvalle Clayton between the dates of July 19 to 21, 2018.”

Stephen, 64, died on July 21 at their home, and that “the investigation autopsy toxicology tests discovered poisonous levels of Tetrahydrozoline in the body of the victim.” The chemical is frequently used in eye drops.

“Lana Clayton admitted to investigators she administered the substance to Stephen Clayton without his knowledge.”

Who knew that eye drops could kill or that they would test for such a chemical? I hate that this is out there in the public.

YIKES!

POISONING ARREST: Woman may have tried to kill husband before he died from eye-drop poisoning, officials say

YORK COUNTY, S.C.
- York County investigators said they charged a woman with murder after she admitted to poisoning her husband, but Channel 9 learned this may not have been the first time she tried to kill him.

According to officials, Lana Sue Clayton shot her husband in the head in 2016 with a crossbow while he slept. Officers told Channel 9 that at the time, both said it was an accident, and no intent to commit a crime was found.

Well...a nurse. I remember learning about the toxicity in nursing school and I think it stuck out to all of us because of the idea something seemingly harmless was indeed not.

Wasn't that an episode of CSI?

She really wanted to get rid of him!

They must have had a strong pre-nup where she would come out with very little if they divorced. IMO.

Why else would she try to kill him twice in two years? The first time was so obvious.

Just like Chris Watts, don’t these people realize they will never get to live the life or spend the money in the manner they dream of. Their chances of getting caught are too high for me to ever gamble as they both did!

Wife Attempted Suicide After Poisoning Husband With Eye Drops: Police

The family of a South Carolina man who perished after his wife poisoned him with eye drops initially believed her story to police: that her husband died after falling down the stairs.
[.....]
After Steven was found dead in the couple’s palatial home, Clayton told detectives with the York County Sheriff’s Office that Steven toppled down the stairs. But a suicide attempt by Clayton—just one day before her arrest—appears to have hastened the probe against her.
[.....]
A mother of two and a grandmother, Clayton faces charges of murder and malicious tampering of food. A motive for the alleged rubout remains unclear, though in past encounters with police, Clayton described her husband as “mentally abusive.”

Looks like she was in court on Wed. Oct. 3rd:

York County wife, accused in husband’s poisoning death, gets public defender

Updated October 04, 2018 08:55 AM

York, SC
A York County woman, accused of fatally poisoning her husband with eye drops, used to live in a $1.2 million estate on Lake Wylie. A judge ruled Wednesday that Lana Sue Clayton will get a defense lawyer paid for by South Carolina taxpayers.
Clayton says she does not have access to any of her husband’s money or property.
[.....]
On Wednesday, York County’s Circuit Court Judge Dan Hall ruled that Clayton, a nurse who worked at the Veterans Administration in Charlotte before her arrest, would be appointed a public defender..

She had been denied a public defender after her arrest.

But her family hired a lawyer to show she had no access to the $820,000 home and the adjacent lakefront property, worth another $385,000, as well as vehicles, boats, bank accounts, money or other property.
[.....]
Clayton has been jailed without bond since her arrest Aug. 31, a day after she tried to commit suicide, police said.

and @JerseyGirl - probably a bit too early to look & see if she has a next court date, eh?

Disturbing that several of the crimes with eye drops cited in the Snopes article were committed by high school students. Hope this case helps educate more people (like us!) about the risks of a seemingly benign substance.
