Pictured on a dark, gray headstone next to Pilgrim Ford Baptist Church in Yemassee is the face of Ver’mon Steve with the words underneath, “I love you and there is nothing you can do about it.”

It’s a phrase the 36-year-old church deacon used to say as he greeted parishioners, recalled his mother, Janice Steve.

“He was not the person who looked down on somebody,” she said in a recent interview at her Varnville home in Hampton County. “That was just his demeanor.”

Ver’mon Steve was one of 95 homicide victims in Beaufort County from 2007 through 2016.

The cause and manner of Steve’s death have not yet been determined, said Deputy County Coroner David Ott, though the Sheriff’s Office has called it a homicide. Janice Steve said she believes her son, a welder and restaurant worker, was shot.

Tyron Wallace Jr. faces a murder charge, and both Wallace and Varsheen Antuan Smith are charged with kidnapping the unnamed acquaintance, records show. A third suspect, Tayquan Lampkin, 21, is charged with accessory after the fact of murder.

None of the three defendants has been tried.

Varsheen “Twiz” Smith, 42, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the Oct. 25, 2015 kidnapping of Andre Frazier. He also was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He received five-year sentences for each of the gun charges, to be served concurrently with the kidnapping sentence.

Frazier went to Smith’s Green Street house to visit his longtime friend and Smith’s roommate, Vermon Steve. Steve wasn’t home and Smith, along with third man, Tyrone Wallace, forced Frazier into the house.

Smith still faces a pending charge of accessory after the fact to murder in Steve’s death. Charges are pending against Wallace, 23, as well. The St. Helena Island man is charged with Steve’s murder and Frazier’s kidnapping.

St. Helena man sentenced to life for 2015 murder and kidnapping

Tyrone Anthony Wallace Jr., of St. Helena, was sentenced Friday to life in prison for the killing of Vernon Steve and 25-years in prison for the kidnapping of Steve's friend.

Varsheen “Twiz” Smith was convicted of kidnapping in February and received a 25-year sentence. He still faces pending charges of accessory after the fact to the murder of Steve.
