Missing girl's relative pushes for 'Serenity Alert'

Living in Bellevue, Nebraska, just south of the Cornhusker State's largest city, Kayla Sacca knew that kids go missing all the time. But it wasn't until her cousin Serenity Dennard went missing in South Dakota last week that the issue really hit home.

"It's been hard for all of us," Sacca said. Although she has not had contact with Serenity's immediate family for a few years, Sacca said she and her family still love 9-year-old Serenity and are worried about her.

[...]

When Sacca heard what happened, she felt that valuable hours had been lost in the time between the little girl's disappearance and when Serenity's story was first picked up by the media. That's when she began conceptualizing the idea of a missing kids alert system she has dubbed a "Serenity Alert."

"Nobody even knew to look," Sacca said.

She began a Change.org petition for the system, appealing to governmental higher-ups in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa to adopt it. She envisions it being in the form of an app or other method that people could download nationwide. As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had garnered more than 1,000 signatures.

[...]

The investigation into Serenity's disappearance is still ongoing, and authorities say anyone who has seen her should call the Pennington County Sheriff's Office at 605-394-6115 instead of attempting to rescue or recover the girl themselves.

Search for missing 9-year-old resumes

I have double a d b l o c k e r s on my computer and can't read this article. If it is new, can someone please post content? Thank you.

Search and rescue groups took advantage of warmer temperatures on Wednesday to resume looking for a 9-year-old girl who's been missing for more than a week.

Nineteen men and women.....

---------------------------------------------------

Duhamel said Wednesday's search party covered areas northwest and southwest of the Children's Home, which she described as "rugged" terrain.

Thank you so much, I sure wish she could be found. I keep hoping that someone in her family knows where she is, and that she is alive and warm tonight. We don't know her family dynamics and (really aren't entitled to know) but a part of my heart holds onto the belief that she is okay and that someone picked her up that day. :)

She ran off spontaneously. Nothing unusual in that .That is in a residential treatment place kids have running behavior.

With all due respect, we don't know if it was spontaneous or not. If and until that information is released, I will continue to hold onto my "what ifs".

A nine year old runs out into the winter during gym time. She was watching the clock?

How exactly would anyone contact her? I doubt children in residential placement have access to cell phones, walk around unmonitored. for any reason. There is someone with them at all times. Several someone’s

My best friend works in residential treatment in another state in the Midwest.

Some of the children have different horrifying experiences such as abuse that you read about on here. The worst. Some have witnessed a parent murdering the other parent.

The children have someone with them all of the time. It is for the safety of the other children as well.

Thank you for your thoughts, but my opinions differ and that's a good thing. I see in color, not just black and white.. thank God.

That is my one remaining hope. I don't know how it could have worked out, but I'm hanging on to that since the lady shared her story and the purple ribbons for SD.

I don't know how either, but surely to goodness she had visitors and hopefully they were somewhat private in nature.

My experience in residential treatment was that some children had a really difficult time after family visited, or after home visits. Not sure if Serenity had any visitors, and was at a point where home visits were part of her treatment plan.

I hold onto that hope as well. PCSO also has not ruled it out:
The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says if Serenity has been outside this entire time, it's unlikely she survived.

However they have not ruled out the possibility she could still be alive in a warm shelter or was picked up by someone.

Search resumes for missing girl -- still no breakthrough
The cold and snowy weather pattern that has dominated the area since Serenity's disappearance has hampered searchers who look to seize any slight opening they can.

"We wanted to take advantage of the weather," said GS, a Pennington County Search and Rescue team member who is also the fire chief for the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department. "It was fairly warm yesterday and things melted a little yesterday. We saw some of the creeks melt and some of the snow melt on some of the hillsides. The weather's pretty nice today and we wanted to get one more opportunity out there to look at some high priority areas close to the Children's Home and see if we could get our eyes on Serenity."

Future search plans will be decided on a day by day, authorities say, pending a break in the weather or any new information investigators uncover.

Heartbreaking that the search has been halted, although I understand. I would not want to be the one deciding the next steps. My prayers are continuing for Serenity, the sheriff's dept, children's home, and all who love this little girl.
