Seaching for Anna - #2

Question for Annasmom:

Anna was wearing oversized rubber boots on the day she went missing. Were the boots big enough that they could come off easily, like if she ran or if someone grabbed her and she kicked?

ETA: The reason I ask this is because I was wondering if she had put up a fight with her abductor, if the boots would fly off. Perhaps she knew her abductor(s) and willingly went with them?
Yes, those boots were too big for her. They were hand-me-downs from her brother, I believe.

So it sounds like someone definitely snatched her from a car (as we all presumed) and not by foot because 1. There is a good chance a boot would've fallen off along the way if they snatched her and walked 2. If they made her walk, it would've taken her awhile to walk in those boots that were too big for her and you guys would've caught up with her.

I dont remember why but I think we talked about finding old telephone books. I found some old San Mateo County telephone books:

http://www.oldtelephonebooks.com/city/San Mateo/California

and here

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=8856&path=San+Mateo.1973

I also found a site that stated the Library of Congress in DC has a lot of old telephone books. So thats another place to look at.

I thought we could look up "Richard Speder" (the Wild Man) but I remembered he got his mail from a PO Box. Could someone please remind me why we talked about finding old telephone books for the area?

Thank you!

It was mentioned recently in the BFH thread, related to all the different places / addresses / phone numbers found in GW's notes.

Also, it is mentioned in the "Couple in the Car" thread that when GW died, he had two phone numbers in his wallet - one of which was a number from Washington State (the car the couple was driving may have had WA plates). Not sure if we ever found out who the number belonged to.

GinaM THANK YOU for the reminder! I dont know why I forgot! Do you know where I can find the phone number(s)? Thanks!

The SearchingforAnna.Com bumper stickers are on their way. If you want one, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope (41 cent first class) to Annasmom, Box 370462, Montara, CA 94037. The bumper stickers are free, courtesy of SherlockJr. Blue and orange, very nice.

I was reviewing my email and rediscovered an email that had gotten lost in the shuffle during the DNA results from "C". It was a link to an article in the SF Chronicle about a human bone being discovered on the beach in Half Moon Bay in 2001. There was no information in the article concerning how old the bone was or if it could have belonged to a child, so I wanted to follow up on it. I received an email from the detective working Anna's case and he confirmed that the bone was not of a nature that it could have been from Anna.

Thanks to the member who sent this info to me and sorry that it took so long to resolve the question.

Thank you so much for the news and for the free stickers!
I hope to send for mine over the week-end.

I had an almost 2 hour long conversation with Craig Barrick last nite. I have invited Craig to join the forum to answer more specific questions. So a heads up, we may have a new member here in the next few weeks. Craig has a pretty good memory of what happened that day. He had forgotten about stopping by to watch the horses on the way to the farm that day until I mentioned it to him. He has no recollection of seeing a van driving down the road. He does remember Annasmom being very concerned that her ex-husband took Anna. And of coarse, like any man, he does remember the pretty neighbor. The phone call confirmed that Craig had nothing to do with Anna missing on Jan 16, 1973.

Hi GraceBlue, sorry I didn't reply to this sooner! The discussion of phone numbers comes up in the BFH thread starting on page 4:
http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50434&page=4

The mention of a Washington State phone number is on the first page of the Couple in the Car thread:
http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37211
although the phone number is not posted there. It may be posted somewhere on the BFH thread, I'm not sure.

Thanks, SherlockJr for making that call. It is great that Craig will be joining us soon - as the last person to see Anna a mere 5-to-10 minutes before she disappeared, his recollections will be very helpful.

I sent out an envelope to Annasmom today for the bumper sticker. Sorry so late!

Oh, I also forgot to post that I followed Annasunc's advice and wrote to Oprah a while back. Hopefully it will help!

Was this immediately after Anna dissappeared? I thought it was assumed that she had gone to the creek and the idea of Anna's father being involved didn't come up until some time later.

Jodibug, congratulations!
In answer to your question, I did not have any idea what had become of her (and still don't), so all possibilities were considered. Nobody just assumed that she had gone to the creek, but since that was the most immediate danger, that was the first thing we investigated.

I know it is written here somewhere but hate to go back to read all the posts. What was the time lapse between the last time Anna was seen and the time she was discovered missing?

About five to ten minutes between when Craig arrived at the farm (and saw Anna playing) and when Annasmom noticed the silence and started the search.

I typed something up and sent it in to Oprah this morning. I'll be sending in for a bumper sticker soon too! Can't wait to put it on my car :)

We sent the attached map of the farm to Craig to point out where he last saw Anna. His reply: As for Mikie's request, as best as I can recall, Anna was relatively close to the front of the yard and inside of the fence line. As per the map you sent me, I would say she was approximately centered between the "k" in the word "back", (where it says, "Front and back yards"), and the front gate, (the gate nearer to the road).

Hi to all. Haven't posted in a while, but I read each and every day. I am totally frustrated because I always feel as thought I want to search so much more actively and so much more specifically for Anna, but I don't know what to look for, how to look for it, or where to look. I am so much in awe of all the people here who do come up with fabulous ideas and who search tirelessly for clues or figure out ways to publicize Anna's story. God bless you all!

Anyway, the one thing I can contribute is some logic and insight, one of my very, very limited strengths. Not that either of those things are lacking on this board--far from it!

Great, great move on your part, Sherlock, to contact Craig! I think that the most important information of any mysterious disappearance is usually found immediately after the event itself. The information may not always be noticed at the time or interpretated correctly, but the best clues are the ones that are right there at the time. This information from Craig seems extremely important to me. If Anna was that close to the road immediately before her disappearance, then it logically follows that she was abducted from the road and taken away quickly. For her to disappear within five to ten minutes, she must have been grabbed quickly and taken away by car. The chances of her wandering away from the front yard area, into the back area and lost somewhere or taken from another area seems less likely. A child who wandered from one area of a large yard to another would likely be talking or singing to herself or making some other type of noise that would have been noticed by Annasmom--like the sounds of running or playing while she walked to other areas. If Annasmom had not noticed those types of noises directly, she would, at least, NOT have noticed the lack of sound that initially called her attention to the fact that she needed to look for Anna. I think that the evidence suggests that Anna was most likely grabbed quickly from the front yard and taken away quickly by car.

Just a thought and I hope this isn't a ridiculous thought. Would Craig consider, and is it possible, for him to undergo hypnosis to see if he can recall any other details such as passing any persons or vehicles in the immediate vacinity before he arrived at the house? Other than the ones that were already reported, or better details of those, I mean. I seem to remember that hypnosis was brought up before, but I can't remember specifics.

I also wrote to Oprah, by the way.
