Shocking. CI was a medic in the military, got a nursing degree, and then graduated with honors from Palmer College. He moved back to ND and had a practice in Hazen, then Washburn.

His Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday office hours are 3 - 7:30 pm. That seems limited, but then again, how much chiropractic need is there in Washburn?

I wonder how much income he actually made. Did he not have April rent for his trailer and was upset? Was his office also an RJR-managed property? (The office property is not in CI’s name.)

Just unbelievable.

One of my first thoughts as well was whether his business office was a property managed by them. One easy way to move to a new town and find a home and office would be to go through something like a leasing agent.

Those are limited hours, wow. I wonder if he worked elsewhere although I have never known a chiropractor to do so. It is a small town though as far as how busy his office would be...

He spent five years in the military as a medic and got a degree in nursing, only confirming that chiropractic was what he wanted to pursue. So he spent another 5 years at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa, until in 2006, he could finally call himself chiropractic physician Dr. Chad Isaak. Fresh out of graduate school, Isaak moved back to North Dakota and started a practice in Hazen in 2006.

I thought of that too. Especially thinking about what kind of salary a chiropractor potentially brings in. Would they really live in a trailer park? However, Washburn is a very small town, and this guy is all that comes up on a search...

I live in the city where he went to college, and am surprised I haven't heard of this.

Most chiropractors do not make all that much money, especially relative to physicians.

I'm finally caught up!! I came here tonight and saw I was 15 pages behind. I knew something must have happened! I'm so glad that LE got this guy off the streets and in to custody. I just don't understand the "why". What on earth is bad enough that someone thinks they need to brutally kill 4 people?? SMH. I hope he's never let out of prison........

His Monday (10 - 6) and Friday (1-6) hours are longer days, but the total is only 26.5 hours/week.

Maybe he buckled from financial worry. His military service may have helped with nursing school, but the chiropractic degree probably cost 100k. And we do not know if he had marital or child costs. And if his rent was increased or he couldn’t pay it, he lashed out at RJR.

But still, a person who spent 13 years training and 13 years practicing in healing arts, MURDERS 4 people over what could be just a paltry amount of money? Unreal and terribly sad all around.

post 721 has his background info
Clearly the guy is arrogant. He stated he could treat a dog with joint problems better than a veterinarian. There's a reason that in some states it's illegal for anyone but a veterinarian to treat animals. What part of his training was focused on treating animals. Oh that's right---none of it.

There must be more to it than the money aspect. There just has to be.

In several cases lately, it appears the perp has never had a prior history of crime. This one looks that way thus far as well. And a chiropractor with a military background? It just is hard to wrap one's head around. I am one that knows and believes perps come from all walks of life, that does not surprise me, we have seen the famous, the well known doctor, police officers, clergy, etc.--it is not always who one expects. Yet when they have no record and go from no offenses to something like this it just boggles the mind. 44 years old. There has to be more to this, drugs, financial, etc. and even then, this is extreme.

One thing that has occurred to me, and that is that in many states you cannot evict someone with children from the months of October through I believe April 1st. Well it was April 1st this occurred. The same applies to heat and electricity, they are not shut off for those months if you do not pay, particularly if you have children. I have no idea what North Dakota's laws are regarding these things but it is true in states I am familiar with. I have no idea if he has children or a wife but he may not have paid any of these things for months and it has reached a high total for all of it and now eviction can occur as we are into April... Just a thought and total speculation...

Taking out four employees does not solve that problem though if it is the case...

Just thoughts...

He has no children at home. From a previous link: Court records show that Isaak has been divorced since 2000 and has a daughter from his marriage. His ex-wife took him to court several times in the early 2000s in battles over child support payments, records show.

Sounds like money issues

I thought I had read everything but must have missed that. Thank you.

It is still possible utilities racked up which then can be assessed to the property owner--I think with many of them they will not shut off children or not, but again not sure specifically with that area of ND. With regard to rent, I am unsure. Just thoughts as I said.

So he is single for sure as well? Any gf with children?

The bottom line is nothing really explains doing something so horrible as killing four people, even if any theory holds water I guess.

ND affords certain rights to people regarding payment of utilities but the bottom line is : DO NOT PROHIBIT disconnect during winter months, as long as the other protections are followed.
So yes, they can shut off your utilities during the winter months.

Doesn't lot rent in a trailer park usually include utilities? How much could lot rent be in a small town like that?
I keep thinking there has to be more to it than money. Who kills 4 innocent people over what had to be a relatively small amount of money. Four lives---gone. Even if he was enraged, to kill four people makes no sense.

Welcome to WS

Sorry about you having to go through this tragedy. Very tragic for your small town

Why do you say he was an odd duck? How so?

I'll add my welcome to John!
Any thoughts you'd care to share about why he would do this?

Cant really put my finger on it just something about him that didnt seem right. Honestly the best chiropractor i have ever found. A couple years ago i had back issues noone could fix. He spent over an hour with me that time and fixed me. He really cared about his patients. This just blows me away parents called me tonight and told me who they arrested. Still in disbelief. He was very mild manored and easy going at the same time very odd.
